"At Texas, Charlie Strong is learning a lesson he'd already been taught"

"The former UofL head coach...has gone just 14-18 in two and-a-half seasons in Austin, and is in danger of failing to lead Texas to a bowl game for a second straight year. The Longhorns have been 3-4 at this point in the season just eight times in the last 60 years, and three of those seasons have now come under the direction of Strong."

Wow, Strong owns three of eight 3-4 starts in last 60 years. That fact alone should end this failed experiment.

Just sounds like Louisville fans not facing up to the fact that when you're a mid-major, the way the college football world works that most if not all successful coaches you have will probably get hired away by a more prestigious school.

But, but, Loserville has Papa John's and Yum Yum. Their coach can eat bad food free for years. Who could pass that up? Maybe they should track down Mangino.

In all seriousness, either Mangino or Jim Tressel has to be the best coach in the country that would win but no one will hire. I would say both are better than Briles and also both are less employable.

We cannot and should not hire him, but Jim Tressel is available if we wanted a guaranteed elite coach.

That article is kind of lame. The TL;DR version basically says "look at these two coaches who left! They suck now! Strong is joining their ranks!"

What Stat said: they're a commuter school who is sometimes up and sometimes down, but never considered to be a major destination for any coach. Petrino is only there (again) because they're so willing to look past the crap that makes him a major douche.

I'm too lazy right now to do the research, but IIRC D X Bible was an elite coach when we hired him, but he (as AD) recommended DKR who I don't think was on anyone's A-list at his very young age.

Maybe we should keep looking for that gem in the rough?

No doubt the "don't leave here or you'll regret it" aspect is lame.

The good read part was hearing how they perceive Strong's time at Texas as a failure and conclude his fate is already sealed.

I know what most of us think will happen, just interesting to hear outsiders see it as a forgone conclusion.

Also their take on Strong being an odd fit for a media frenzied major program makes perfect sense when one watches his PC's. I remember grumblings of this from Cards fans as soon as we poached him.

Finally, Strong owning three of eight 3-4 records in last 60 years was a vivid reminder of how low he's taken us.

I mean really, 52 of 57 (non-CS) seasons had a winning record over first 7 games.

Then Strong takes over and goes 0 for 3. That's awful seeing as we canned a coach who was 5-2 over the first 7 games in each of his last 3 seasons.

Bud Wilkinson, and Coach Royal all told the same story. Bible (or someone) called Wilkinson to ask whom to hire. Wilkinson recommended DKR.

Seriously. I thought there was going to be some actual lesson here, something they knew he didn't do well that would get him in trouble down the road. Instead, apparently the key to success is to not take a job somewhere else???

    Waste of time.
