Exactly, and yes we should all feel good for this win. But no it should not change anyone's mind about Charlie Strong. We should be 6-2 or even 7-1 right now. That is how good this team could be. But next week will be two steps back. Trust me. - we will lose again next week. And sadly, I don't think its bothers the team that much to lose. We beat Baylor. We played like champions once or twice this season. Good nuff! Doing it every week is just too hard.

Also, I respect posters like NRHorn and Moondog for staying on the train. We all have our point at which we have seen enough and we don't care to see any more. Mine was after the OSU game this year. I could have been wrong to jump off the train at that time, only time will tell. I personally just don't see this ship turning under this coaching staff though.

We currently are set back. You cannot get out of a setback with the person setting you back. Continuing on losing does not fix anything.

Also, the fans were much much uglier to Mack (and some still are) when he was 6-2 (5-0 in Big 12 play) at this point in 2013 coming off of a 9-4 season. The fans have been much more supportive of Charlie's 4-4 after a 5-7 season.

Three years ago we were in the hunt for a Big 12 title despite having Case McCoy at QB. This year we have a real quarterback but our defense is so bad we have to finish 2-2 to be in the hunt for the Cactus Bowl.

I think the ugliness toward Mack was due to fans feeling like they were powerless to influence the process. Right or wrong, Mack was powerful, and there was a perception that Mack could set his own timetable and had no intention to relinquish the job.
And it was time. It truly was. I am nostalgic for those times too, but we'd still be mediocre at best if Mack was still here. IMO

With Charlie, its not just a matter of if, its a matter of when. He does not have any leverage. So maybe fans just want to see the guy get carried around the field a few more times before he gets canned. Also if he actually manages to turn the ship and win out in convincing fashion and keep his job, then that is kind of an F you to the power structure so there is that too.

All I know is, if Charlie Strong loses 3 more games, he will be the only coach in Texas Football history with three consecutive losing seasons so he better figure out a way to win 3 more this year. It seems very doable with Kansas, TCU and a mediocre at best bowl opponent on the schedule assuming we win at least two regular season games. Texas Tech Saturday is not exactly a good Mike Leach team either.

That is offset by the fact that we suck on the road.

I agree, point being this is a very winnable game if Charlie Strong is not a setback.

    No sarcasm here BTW,
I understand everyone's point and I'll move on. Not off board with Charlie, but that's my choice and really means nothing in the grand scheme.
I guess I'm still mad at the way some fans treated Mack. That was behind my original post.
I'm out, thanks for the discussion any more posts on this would be beating a dead horse and I agree with above about having 1 thread on firing Charlie

Carthago delenda est Cato the Elder

Just as Cato the Elder ended every speech with Carthago delenda est, we must end every post with Charley must be booted at the end of the season.

Influence the process? Are you upset that as a fan, you have no influence on the process? Of what? I'm not aware of any NCAA programs, baseball, football, or basketball where fans influence anything .....other then attendance.

Is this fan base entitled to influence?

    HTown,

Have you consulted with T Boone or John Tyson or Jeff & Bill in Alabama or the committee of one that hired Bobby Petrino at Auburn or Drayton McLane or Bum Bright (when he was alive) or Bill Clements? I would submit that some fans have a great deal of influence, and from our experience , when they don't at Texas, we set new definitions for "cluster".

Are you referring to the man that's running for President?!?:brickwall:

No, please leave politics off this board. I can cite a few examples, but one in particular. The president had to impress everyone by pulling in to work every day in his brand new Bently. He was left out of all the staff meetings and then we he discovered he was left out would come in huffing and puffing that we wasn't invited and then the meetings would proceed to him and the VP of sales doing nothing but calling each other MFer's for 40 min straight. Yes a full 40 min straight. No one could stand him, but he turned around a failing business and made it very profitable.

No I didn't say that I was upset about anything or make an argument that fans are entitled to any influence beyond attendance. I was talking about perceptions. Re-read my post.

Wasn't this the season we were all supposed to be excited about turning the corner and cheering on an upward trending program?

Instead 8 games in we're still divided as ever and trading barbs about dumping or giving our struggling .500 coach another pass.

This program needs an injection of new hope to unify the fan base, which can only be achieved through new blood at the top.

A friend of mine and I are having a debate about whether we make the cactus bowl, the armed forces bowl or no bowl. I say Motel 6 Cactus Bowl or we bust. He said I am a dreamer for believing the horns could win enough games to qualify for the second biggest bowl game in phoenix. He says 6-6 Texas will play Navy in Fort Worth. That is where we are at in year 3 under Strong.

And sadly, I think the team has become complacent about that.
Charlie was supposed to get rid of the county club atmosphere and bring back a winning culture, but the complacency seems more entrenched now than it was 3 years ago.
I don't think losing bothers this team that much.

Conjecture, my esteemed colleagues. Webster would certify your comments as conjecture regarding how the team feels.
Did my heart good to see those kids run off the field smiles on thier faces after beating a team everyone here , except Easy, predicted as a BU blowout.
(I thought the same so no rocks being thrown here)

Of course these are your personal opinions and are simply speculation.

So we can all agree that the claims that players under Mack Brown were soft, entitled and had bad culture were just personal opinions and speculation, right?

    I agree..... sadly.

I wanted Strong from the very beginning, I was still rooting for him even after losing to Cal and OSU but I can no longer. I know he can coach but he made too many fatal mistakes here.

The inexcusable part to me is the defense, hell he's a defensive coach and that's what has kept them from being undefeated this year! The defense wouldn't have been any worse if they had coached themselves!! i can't make excuses for him any more, He's got two years of his own recruits and that's plenty of time to put together a serviceable defense, there are no excuses for the defense to be this bad. NONE!

Arrests, news stories, convictions, working the system for minimal jail time, walking away from a car crashed into a building were not opinions or speculation.
Let's not beat the 'culture change' horse again.:smh:

Oh wow, didnt realize things were so out of hand! Sounds like we were basically baylor!

I would hate to see any players under charlie drive drunk or get arrested!

What does this even mean? Mack Brown advised players to seek attorneys? Should a player, or anyone, charged with a crime not seek minimal jail time?

Read the transcripts of Charlie's early OC's this season. His take on the D was there was no trust. If there is no trust it is everyone for himself.

Used to be, you have a losing season at UT, you're fired --- see DKR stepping down at 5-5-1, Akers' firing after his first losing season.

Now, it's "wait till he has all his own players" even if that means 3 losing seasons to get there?

    WTF?

Seriously y'all, this game in the Big 12 and even SEC is almost all about the QB. But our backup QB, is a dude they are afraid to let throw. So why don't we have a suitable backup after 3 years? That's negligence anywhere, much less at UT.
If we had went 8-4,8-4,8-4, I'd be good with a change. It's just what the Job is. Texas should be Top 10-15, every year period.
