I suspect that Herman is a foregone conclusion. While his team stumbled against SMU and Navy, the wins against OU and Louisville were nothing short of stunning. In fact, I doubt that any team in the country, including Alabama, would have dominated like UH did in those two games. It was something to behold. I cannot speak about Fedora because I simply don't know much about him. There are others that should be in the conversation including Peterson, Harsin, John Harbaugh (if interested) and even Chris Klieman of ND State, where his record is 38-4. I like dark horses with those kinds of records. I suspect that any of the viable candidates will succeed at Texas and, in fact, I am expecting 10 + wins next year. I'd say, though, that the odds on favorite is Herman.
Herman is not my first choice but I bet he produces winning seasons, wins an out of state road game beat Kansas.
On a serious note, I feel the decision has already been made by the Big Cigars to bring in Herman. He was a UT asst. at one time, he's plugged into Texas HS football, has demonstrated he can turn around a moribund program. Even stated UT is his dream HC job, FWIW. But his track record is short. I like what I hear about Fedora but I don't know if he is the right answer. Regardless, my fear is the Cigar Chompers and academic decision makers will not make the right choice.... again!
@SabreHorn has stated many times unequivocally that Swinney will only go one place and that place is Bama.
The atmosphere might even be somewhat tolerable IF the results of our on the field/on the court products matched the performance of the revenue side. The way I used to always state it was, "I wish our athletic department cared as much about winning as it does about revenue streams." Our bell cow program last 7 years -- 2010 5-7 2011 8-5 2012 9-4 2013 8-5 2014 6-7 2015 5-7 2016 5-6* As best as I recall, we were #1 or #2 in total AD revenues through most of these years. Something is amiss. There is a lack of congruence between revenue and performance. We are not getting our moneys worth. Our school is like one of those stocks favored by fund managers who keep buying it despite flailing sales, squeezed profit margins and a lousy new product line. The issues are obviously not limited to football. Baseball 2012 30-22 (no CWS) 2013 27-24 (no CWS) 2014 46-21 (no CWS) 2015 30-27 (no CWS) Mens BBall 2008-09 - 2nd round exit (7 seed) 2009-10 - 1st round exit (8 seed) 2010-11 - 2nd round exit (4 seed) 2011-12 - 1st round exit (11 seed) 2012-13 - did not make NCAAs 2013-14 - 2nd round exit (7 seed) 2014-15 - 1st round exit (11 seed) 2015-16 - 1st round exit (6 seed)
Uh, you know, not exactly who I had in mind. A generation, family, and gender off. Other than those misses, spot on.
2014 baseball went to the college world series and finished in the top 4. 2015 baseball won the big 12 tournament. It was Augie's time, but baseball did not quite underperform as badly as football or basketball (and even basketball has not underperformed as badly as football under Charlie Strong).
http://www.hookem.com/story/source-texas-officials-decided-fire-charlie-strong/ Source: “It will happen for sure. The question is when.” Brian Davis and Kirk Bohls American-Statesman Staff @BDavisAAS @kbohls STORY HIGHLIGHTS Charlie Strong is 16-20 in three seasons with the Longhorns. Over in the football office, “We are getting ready for TCU,” one source said. Texas closes out the regular season by hosting TCU at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Posted November 20th, 2016 University of Texas officials have decided to fire football coach Charlie Strong, however the official announcement may not come until Monday, a high-ranking university source told the American-Statesman. The decision comes after Saturday’s shocking 24-21 overtime loss to Kansas, a team that had lost 19 straight Big 12 games. “It will happen for sure. The question is when,” the source said. Strong is 16-20 in three seasons with the Longhorns and may become the first coach to oversee three consecutive losing seasons since 1936-38. He currently has the lowest winning percentage of any coach in UT football history and is 5-10 against ranked opponents in three years. Strong is scheduled to meet reporters at his weekly press conference at 11 a.m. Monday as Texas (5-6, 3-5 Big 12) prepares for the regular season finale against TCU. Texas President Gregory L. Fenves could not be reached on Sunday and did not respond to text messages from the Statesman. Asked when an official announcement could come, “Perhaps in the morning.” the source said. Strong has two years remaining on a guaranteed contract worth $10.7 million. Two athletic department sources said the coaching staff was busy Sunday preparing for Friday’s game. “We are getting ready for TCU,” one source said. Asked if Strong has been told, the high-ranking university source said, “He knows what it coming.” Strong appeared to know the end was near after Saturday’s loss to Kansas. In a somber four-minute press conference, Strong’s voice almost cracked when he was asked what the loss means for his status. “No idea,” he said. Strong’s wife, Vicki, was holding back tears in the cramped media room inside Memorial Stadium. Men’s athletic director Mike Perrin declined to speak to reporters afterward. Several players, including defensive lineman Poona Ford and Charles Omenihu, were seen collapsing on the field. Some players were crying in the locker room afterward. “What you do is go hug ’em and look ’em in the eye, tell ’em to keep battling,” offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert said during the post-game press conference. UT officials are expected to target Houston coach Tom Herman as a possible replacement. According to Houston sources and those familiar with the coach’s thinking, Herman would have “strong interest” in the position. Contact Brian Davis at 512-445-3957. Email bdavis@statesman.com. You are correct. At least in Houston the BMD have been way behind Herman for a while. FYI Baylor is going hard for SMU's coach (who just beat Herman).
SOURCES: UT OFFICIALS MEETING RE STRONG CHIP BROWN 2:26 PM Texas officials were meeting Sunday to decide how to let go of football coach Charlie Strong with the hope of him coaching the TCU game, multiple sources told HornsDigest.com Sources told HD Texas president Greg Fenves initially wanted to wait to do anything until after Friday's regular-season finale against TCU. But after discussions among UT officials on Sunday, it sounds like athletic director Mike Perrin could meet with Strong either Sunday night or Monday morning - before Strong's weekly press conference at 11 am CT on Monday, sources said. The meeting would outline Strong's departure with the hope of Strong coaching in Friday's TCU game, sources told HD.
If Chip Brown reports it, that settles it. Has he ever been wrong? OK, other than that 2,000 - 3,000 times, name once
Right, and reporting at this point that Strong will be fired is akin to reporting that, in fact, Texas officials have settled on burnt orange and white as the official school colors.
Coach Strong does NOT need to be subjected to a Monday presser. Good Grief let us allow this good man some dignity And give him all our good wishes for success at his next school.
duff. Yes, but Duke has one of the best coaches in America, getting results where no one ever has and making something out of nothing without being able to recruit because of academic and financial restrictions. Cut is one helluva coach.
Duke has a good coach that beat Notre Dame this year and has actually competed in every game but the Pittsburgh loss. That was also a rivalry game between Duke and UNC. Even with the loss, Fedora is still grossly overachieving at a historically terrible UNC program that has never won a major bowl ever nor a conference title since 1980.
