Most can agree Jackson will win but peppers and mayfield over a 2000 yard rusher who missed a game is nuts. It's about the best player not the best team, looks like cfp rankings aren't the only thing needing to be fixed
Jackson, Watson and maybe Baker, but Peppers and Westbrook (esp)?? No D'Onta, Cook or any rb for that matter?? who are these people voting, Corso and Lou Holtz? BTW, Jackson wins easily imo
I'm okay with Westbrook because he had been out for blood since the OU game. I'd take cook over mayfield any day
D'Onta should def be there! I heard one voter explain that he can only vote for three players. He advocated a five player ballot because of the obvious bias to QBs and offensive players. Alabama Dlineman Jonathan Allen is one of the best as well, deserves to be there too!
You are suggesting that schools that market their players are the reason they win over more deserving players? So USC out marketed UT and that is the reason Reggie Bush won instead of Vince. Hmmm.
The media got on its collective knees for Reggie Bush, so in a way, yes, he was marketed more. VY was the leader for just about all the season, but then Reggie had that big game against.... Fresno State, and everyone in the media just about creamed their pants. Reggie Bush had a great season, but the media hype machine won him that award. Vince was the most dominant player in college football. To think that Troy Smith won it the next year.... ugh. Vince should have won that award, but the Heisman has really become a joke, and not just that year.
I'm thinking maybe because Foreman has already declared? To me, that can take some luster off the player although I understand it shouldn't. I don't know if it would've been different if he had waited until after the announcement. Like a lot of people, I haven't paid any attention to this trophy since Vince didn't win.....
I have never been to the game in Dallas. My post was in reference to a post that has since been deleted. If you look at the quote in my post he is talking about beating the gooners in Norman. Hence, my question about beginning a home and home.
The Heisman baloney was pretty much over for me when Peyton Manning didn't win. As for Texas, Vince Young and Colt McCoy should have won. After McCoy, I don't watch the ceremony and don't care who is chosen.
I believe it is actually "the most celebrated player". What was especially galling about Colt in 2008 was he had to stand there, on the floor, and watch Sam Bradford collect the trophy - a guy he beat on a neutral field. That was HS. If the world was right, Colt would have on 1 Heisman and 2 NCs and gone down as the best QB in the history of UT. But the world ain't right.
5-7 team and game changing fumbles against Kansas probably had more to do with it. Voters look for "Heisman" moments from players that lead their teams to victory. Unfortunately for Foreman there were not enough of these.
Well now, "that program in the sh--hole they call Norman" means that the program is in Norman, not the game. Perhaps I should have said "that they call....", and if so, my humble apologies. Hopefully some will forgive me. But then again, I really don't care. I think this board is not only excellent in terms of content, but also extremely well managed . Opinions are good and everybody does not always agree, but most are respectful of other's opinions. That is the nature of a good forum. However, I fail to understand why some insist on looking for slight errors, omissions, mistakes in punctuation, etc. to highlight their own self-worth and take shots at others. Are they our head master or just the kid who pulled the little girl's pigtails and hid behind their Mother? I am taking a break. See ya.
So to be clear, it wasn't USC but the "collective" media? Sounds a little Aggie to me. Vince had an incredible year and if the Heisman was decided after the bowl games he would have won hands down. There are several examples where this is the case. Reggie probably had a better three years but Vince clearly had a better season. If Vince stayed his senior year he would have won if he stayed healthy.
What was Mark Ingram or Jason White's "heisman" moment? It is not an award for best or most valuable player. It is either most hyped player or random player from undefeated team (see white and ingram) or near undefeated team.
Yes the collective media. Were you old enough to remember 2006(2005)? Vince was leading most polls before Reggies Fresno State game, even on ESPN. After that game, which USC almost lost, most pundits on TV and radio couldn't stop talking about Bush and were saying Reggie had to win it. The media hype machine went into overdrive. Yes Vince had the better season, even without the bowl game. He should have won it. The bowl game just confirmed it.
The Hype$man has been basically a TV award for decades. One good game on TV or a bad one can decide a player's fate. Long before there was an ESPN, Tommy Nobis was reported as the favorite to be the first player not a back or end that would win the award. Nobis played hurt in a nationally televised game against Arkansas, but still played well. Most agree that game cost him the Hype$man. Billy Cannon's televised punt return against Ole Miss swayed voters. OJ's run on national TV against UCLA catapulted him to over 80% of the vote. Flutie parlayed one pass against the convicts into winning it. Most of the voters never see the candidates play in person, if at all. Then you have douche bags like Paul Hornung, who will only vote for some member of the ND team. If it was given to the best and/or most valuable player, Kenneth Sims would have won it. Not many people have been able to dominate multiple games. I am blessed to have seen both Sims & VY do that. Both deserved the award, but neither received it. Normally I would blame the SID, but Bill did an incredible job as SID, so I blame the ignorance of the voters, not Bill Little.
Yes, unfortunately I am old enough to remember the 2005 season all to well. I don't disagree that Vince was the best player that year. I just don't agree that he lost it due to a media conspiracy. It is a trophy decided by regional voting so bias definitely plays a role. It is true that USC had more votes than Texas though.
If Fresno State didn't kick the ball off to USC like 7 times and USC blew them out then Bush wouldn't have had such a big game and VY probably wins handedly. Also if Vince didn't sit most 4th quarters too.
More like Suh had a great night. The media hype got Suh invited top the Heisman award ceremony. I remember a dropped TD pass in that game by Texas that would have probably been the clincher. I also remember the OC for Nebraska not being very good.
God damn that dropped pass. Probably would have gone for 6. Who was it again? They had butter fingers all season if I recall...
