Horns beat down Tech 67-47 on Dec. 29, 2016 in the conference opener for both. Tech will look at the first quarter, when they were only down four at the end of that quarter and the fourth with they matched the Horns point for point. They will also look at the fact that they shot 41.2% from BTA in that game. Horns pretty much eliminated Tech’s inside game, holding them to 8 points. Brittany Brewer, their 6-4 frosh, though, will be a handful this time around as she has gained experience and confidence.

Horns are more balanced than they were at the start of conference play. I don’t expect Ariel to have another poor shooting game like she did in that game. Tech still doesn’t have anyone to match up with Joyner, leaving Kelsey to face single coverage, which she has gotten good at defeating. The Horns’ 3pt defense has gotten better so I don’t expect Tech to hit 41% from BTA in this game.

Tech is undefeated at home in league play and for the season. This will be a tough game for Texas.

In conference games, Tech at home is averaging 73.3 ppg while allowing 65.7ppg. On the road, the Lady Raiders score 48.7 ppg and give up 67.0 ppg. They are much more comfortable at home, rushing less, taking fewer shots but making a much higher percentage—46.9% at home to 32.2% on the road. They have made as many treys at home as on the road while taking 15 less 3ptes at home. They hit 42.5% of their treys at home compared to 30.9% on the road. From the FT line, the difference is even greater. They get to the line almost three times more at home than on the road: 59 FT attempts at home versus 21 on the road. They are at 86.4% from the FT line at home and a meager 52.4% on the road. That’s a big reason why they are scoring 24.6 ppg more at home than on the road in league games. They are simply shooting better at home and getting to the FT line more often. They also have a slight increase in rebounding when playing at home than when on the road: 37.3 to 35.0. That gives them a plus 4.0 rpg edge when playing at home. The Lady Raiders give up 12.7 rpg more when playing on the road.

Opponents on the other hand, are playing about the same. FG% is 40.8% on their home court and 40.1% at Lubbock. They are making 23.6% from BTA on their court vs 26.6% in Lubbock although they are shooting less treys at their place (13-55) than when in Lubbock (21-79).

Texas reverses the usual theory that teams play better at home than they do on the road. At least, through four home games and three road games, the main category the Horns are not doing better on the road than at home is rebounding. They are averaging 43.5 rpg at home and 41.0 rpg on the road. In fact, two of the conference road games are the only games that Texas has lost the rebounding battle this season. Otherwise, Texas shoots better on the road. On total shots, Texas is making 39.5% of their shots at home and 45.5% on the road. From BTA, Horns are making 28.8% and hitting 31.3% on the road. Even from the FT line, Texas is doing better on the road. They hit 66.7% of their shots at home and 72.7% away from the friendly confines of the FEC.

On the road, Texas is allowing opponents to hit 36.4% from the field, 26.4% from BTA and 74.0% from the FT line.

Horns will throw at least nine players against Tech. Hopefully, Jada will be available to play. Tech is wondering if Arella Guirantes, a 5-11 Fr. Guard, averaging 12.3 ppg for the season, will be able to play. She has started 15 of 16 games including all five Big 12 games before sitting out the OU game. She is averaging 9.0 ppg. She had been spotted wearing a boot on her left foot during the OU game. Not wearing a boot the other day.

two streaks on the line in this game: Tech's undefeated record at home this season, 10-0 for the season including 3-0 in conference play and Texas' record undefeated start in Big 12 play, currently at 7 wins in a row.

Disappointing that this game can be watched only on pay per view.

Any idea if Ramirez is going to play. She was hurt in the first game (ankle?) and didn't play. Has she made it back? If she has, then that changes things up some. She has LONG range BTA capabilities and will let it fly in a very small opening. That would change how we guard the arc. Although the inside game of TT didn't scare anybody, my perception was that we could help down some. If Ramirez plays, you cant help down off her at all.

I like Candi Harvey and how she coaches her team. She has had to overhaul the roster. The team has 6 D1 transfers and one JUCO. The team lost their starting point guard from last year early this season when she left the team unexpectedly. Speculation was that she didn't like changing rolls now that Recee Caldwell was eligible. Also noticed that one of the transfers was Jada Terry. At one time Terry was committed to Texas. She and her teammate Candace Adams both were Texas commitments from Cedar Hill. I went to see them play and felt that they both were reaches....even though they were young. Later they both de-committed......... with Terry going to A&M ........then transferring to Tech. Candace Adams ended up at North Texas. I watched Adams last night on TV and she has had a good career. She has both knees with meniscus tears along with other injuries but is out there hustling up a storm. I am glad both are now playing but I think the "reach" analysis was about right. Harvey mentions that she has to get more out of Terry in the middle. It was Aston's first year on the job as I remember it. It would be really nice to see Tech back to where they were with Marsha Sharp. Lubbock was REALLY a hard place to play then. I am going to spend the $6.95 and watch as that is about as good entertainment price as you can get on a Saturday night. Hook Em !

Flash, Ramirez is playing for TCU, not Tech. She has gotten over her injury and is back on the floor. She played against Baylor four days after TCU played Texas and she has played in the Frogs' last three games since playing Texas. She is not regained her starting spot yet, though.

Flash, Candi Harvey is a former A&M coach. Candi Whitaker is the coach at Texas Tech.

Boy am I confused on a Friday ! For sure Ramirez is a Frog so I will keep those thoughts on her until we play in Ft Worth. For sure I am going to run over to Cowtown and see that game next Wednesday. I promise to yell at Ramirez using the correct name and team!

And I always confuse names. Maybe I should stick to first names (Candi). Hope that is all I got wrong but maybe not. Thanks for keeping me straight.

Tech has had a week off to prepare as they had no mid-week game since last Saturday at OU.

We have to rebound well, stay out of foul trouble, and defend their three point shooters.
