I'll give the benefit of the doubt on this being true, though I doubt it (if that makes sense), especially the dialogue. Also, what business of it was yours?

This explains why his parents wanted him to leave Waco initially and then is even more strange that he flipped to Baylor after his OV.

He had a future ahead of him. He was expected to challenge for the Corner position opposite of Jordan Thomas and be a big part of the return game. Now he is off to prison. Sad deal.

Strange. A few days before Christmas a car just as described sat idling while watching me fill my tank at the new gas station off northbound I35 near the BU campus. Thinking back now, the car was far enough away from the pumps that it would be off the surv.cameras possibly. I kept thinking it was a couple of kids looking for trouble, kept staring at me. Nothing came of it, they drove off after I gassed the car

Was driving back to the Dallas area that evening. Lot more to the story, won't bore, but I would be surprised if this wasn't the same vehicle as described

I made it my business since I had been in the young man's home recruiting him to go to The University of Texas; also because I could not then, and can not now stand that sanctimonious son of a *****.

I didn't know you coached college football. I assume for the horns, but if not who?

No, I did not. There was a time when alums were allowed to assist in recruiting. At Texas, we were organized and only did so when asked to, unlike places like SMU & aTm. We also helped arrange summer jobs for recruits. Met a lot of rival coaches, and made some good friends that I still stay in contact with; also met some people that I can't stand and won't be in the same room with.

Lots of great stories, like the real reason Marcus went to OU; the fact that one small Assembly of God Church in East Texas was the church home to the state's #1 RB, a two time NCAA track champion, and a first round NFL draft pick over a five year period. Not many big churches can claim that, much less three All American athletes in five years.

Then there was the RB from Hemphill who was flooded with offers. I was in a BBQ restaurant with 8 college coaches waiting our turn. I stood up and announced, "We are all here for the same reason. We all know the Aggies paid him to work at the lumber yard last summer, and will again this summer. Can we just get organized, draw numbers for order to go spend 15-20 minutes with the kid?" We never really stood a chance as LSU coughed up cash to buy him from LSU.

Probably the same reason Dickerson went to SMU

Not even close HP. I didn't find out the truth for several years. we should have known and didn't have a clue. Dickerson was all about Dickerson because he is that kind of narcissistic piece of ****.

The 30 for 30 film "The Best That Never Was" details every aspect of Dupree's life. Dupree indicated that OU buying his mom a new double-wide trailer played a major part in his decision. For 3/4 of a season he was the greatest RB I've ever seen and I've been watching for over 50 years. Guys like Greg Pruitt, Joe Washington, and Billy Sims were scary as hell. Dupree was freakin' terrifying.

30 on 30 was a total whitewash like everything ESPN does. Did they find out the truth? Maybe, maybe not, but there was no way they would ever run that. And, yes, Dupree was an incredible running back, at least until Richard Peavy broke both their helmets on an incredible hit. Peavy was the most mild mannered young man you would ever meet, until he stepped on the field.

The sad thing about Marcus was that he never prepared himself to play major college football. He was always faster and stronger than everyone else without ever having to work hard. I guess he couldn't see the potential that a well conditioned Marcus could achieve. As good as he was his freshman year we didn't see anything close to what he could have been. This is why he was in the coaches dog house from the beginning and was not well received by his teammates. I had a friend from high school who played at OU during that time that told Marcus was always jogging around the track while they were busting their *** at practice.

The hit that Sabre referenced probably resulted in a concussion for Marcus and he was done. Unfortunately for him, the voices from Philadelphia had a stronger pull than any of the relationships he had in Norman. His immaturity and self-centered attitude alienated him from his teammates and he was such an anomaly to his coaches that they didn't know how to reach him.

Like in many cases, a series of bad decisions led to consequences that resulted in a lifetime of regrets.

I remember thinking as I left the Cotton Bowl after that last game that I had never seen a team beat on a player like Texas did to him that day. Nothing illegal, just hard nose brutal tackling. I did not see 30 on 30, but as I remember it, he went back to Mississippi, never to return to Norman.

I was at the game and remember wondering, "why aren't we blocking anybody?" The OL, TE's and backs were all recruited to run the wishbone so the version of the I-formation OU was running didn't have the big OL, TE's and full backs to run it efficiently. There were also rumblings that the fellas were not giving "maximum effort" to block for Marcus either. I don't know that I believe this but the rumors alone tell a lot about the chaos surrounding the program at the time and explains why there wasn't a huge effort to bring him back.

I do know that when Dupree left, it gave OU more room under their salary structure to pay everybody else more $$$$....

Speaking of when Alumni recruited like Sabrehorn said....I knew about a plane ride to Norman that just had Billy Sims, Greg Roberts and George Cumby on it....Talk about a private plane full of talent. A Heisman winner, Outland trophy winner and a 3 time all-american linebacker that Earl said hit him harder than anybody he ever played against. All 3 came back dressed like super fly and had transportation for their careers in Norman.

    Galveston,

To this day, Scott won't tell me where he hid Billy Sims for those last two plus weeks, but then RC would never tell where he hid Bubba Bean or Johnny Hector.
