Yuck, buddy system at work. Being on Briles staff is one thing, but being so vocal in his defense is something else. He can delete, delete, delete tweets all day long, but it's still out there. Disappointing move by Herman.

We've hired a former Baylor / Briles staffer with the last name of "Horny"?? WTF! That's rather sick...

The big question is , Do you want to WIN ?????
Will you be happy with mostly 7-5 or 8-4 seasons, with an occasional 10-2 year if we get really lucky....Or do you want 10-2 to be the norm with several 11-1 and 12-0 years mixed in ??? That is the reality of it.
To win big we must do two things ...
    1) Hire coaches who can get the job done, even if they aren't saints.
    2) Sign players who are bad *** dudes on the field, and may not be saints off it either.
You are not going to win with good kids....Mack tried that his last few years.
Look at the teams playing for the title this year and last year.
One plays guys who assault police officers and get arrested for illegal gun posession etc...
The other allows sexual harassment on and off the field ( see tOSU vs Clemson video as example ).....
If they condon that, what else goes on that is covered up or not reported.???
If Charlie goes into USF and does what he did at UT, with his core values, they will suck in no time.

Herman knows what he needs to do. He knows the standards of UT. He knows the character of these guys he is hiring. He has worked with them. I too have questioned some of his hires, but I will trust he wants to win and win the right way. In about 8 months we will know if we hired the right guy.

So you're in favor of cheating, becoming ThugU, or tolerating rapists as long as we win? The integrity of the program doesn't matter to you?!

And when did Mack not try to win with good kids? Overall, there were a few outliers, but overall he maintained a clean program. I don't remember our NC team being filled with a bunch of low moral players.

The controversy associated with the Horny hire isn't about winning and losing. It's not about whether or not he was on Briles' staff. It's not that he was employed by Baylor. It's not about his credentials. In my judgment it's about one thing and one thing only, that Horny was a staunch and vocal defender of Briles. That's it, and that is a problem.

When Sterlin Gilbert stated in his introductory press conference last year that Art Briles was "a high character guy," that was also a huge problem and I made that observation at the time.

We either stand for something or we don't.

This guy could be the brightest analyst in the game but that does not matter to me. What matters is character and integrity, and I believe that Herman may have sacrificed some of his by making this decision.

Yep, I agree. He is not guilty by association with Baylor.
Lots of people take jobs working for slime-balls because we all have to feed our families and pay our bills and a job is just a means to an end.

Its the tweets that make this feel really damn gross. Makes me question his character and/or intelligence. Its like he voluntarily jumped in dung and rolled around in it.

If Herman feels he's a good hire after vetting him; that's good enough for me. Surely, TH would have asked him about the spirit of his tweets. I'm sure he knew that many people would be upset or that the optics would bring some heat. AND surely he knows that if something comes out that Horny was involved in that scandal, it would sully the reputation of the University as well as his own.

Everything I have seen from TH tells me he's a big believer in how his programs are perceived from the tiles on the floor to their overall public relations, so I don't think he would risk so much on hiring an analyst without being comfortable with his character. I hope I'm right!

I agree there is too much being made about this hire. One would think we were hiring an incompetent coach from Strong's staff.

I can't get past the strange double juxtaposition of "horn" in his name which is partly cool because "Longhorn" but the "horny" connection with the Baylor mess just weirds it out completely. Let's call him Jerry Smith and move on.

I agree with Brian Davis. Herman seems to be borrowing quite a bit from Saban and Meyer. I approve of this approach

Here's a thought on the Horny hire: Maybe Briles treated Horny very well as a Baylor staffer and Horny had no knowledge of what is alleged to have occurred in Briles' program. Maybe Horny felt strongly that Briles was being treated unfairly. I do not know but it is a possibility!

Herman hired Horny to his staff and must feel comfortable with Horny's explanation. I doubt Herman would jeopardize his own reputation, his dream job or the school's image if he did not believe Horny was a decent human being with the desired skills for the job.

Expressing my ignorance for the greater good of the board. What does Creative Director for the Texas Longhorns do?

Probably a lot of graphic design for social media, promotion, recruiting and such, which he did for Alabama. Here is his website where you can see his work. He is talented.

The fact that Tom Herman is paying attention to things like this seems consistent with what we are hearing about his focus on alignment and just all the little details of building a first class program.

This is going to sound strange, but it may just have been worth the Charlie years to get Herman. Herman is going to work magic here.

I am very happy with what Herman is doing including the hires. I think he will land a couple of very good recruits by signing day. I very optimistic Herman will win year one regardless of the talent level he was left with. I predict there will be players leaving after spring ball.
There is nothing worthwhile about the Charlie years. Strong was a terrible coach that resulted in terrible Texas football for three years. He should have been fired after year two.

Strong pulled in quite a few damn good players. Less success with staff and development. He instilled some pretty important values for this day and age in my opinion. So there were some worthwhile things that Strong did. Field results were obviously lacking. Herman will improve that and continue with improving the team culture IMO.

The jury is still out on that. Everything, except the one place that it counts, suggests that. However the one place it counts (the scoreboard) says no.

Undisputable underclassman talent on the field last season. It doesn't take much to distinguish high quality individual talent from overall team performance.

It was not worth losing scoreboard embarrassingly to Arkansas and losing to Kansas and 24-0 to iowa state. Herman has not won a game yet. We do not know if he will be good yet or not.

I do know that having the worst three consecutive years in Texas history was not necessary to have success.
