If Tom gets our program rolling in 2017 we will get the recruits again, they want to win

Exactly. Texas hasn't been able to sell a winning, factually improving product since 2012. Only so much persuasion can take place without any verifiable proof.

Elite coaches (well proven winners on the big stage) can step in a new program and immediately close top talent off verbal promises of winning.

Talented, rising coaches haven't built the luxury to sell most elite recruits on blind trust.

Top talent wants to win and develop their skills under proven winners. Texas hasn't won since 2013. We're 46-42 over the last 7 seasons.

Not to mention we haven't been nationally relevant since 2009. These recruits were around 11 years old back when Texas was respected on the field. Their middle and high school football years (living and breathing the game) saw Texas wallow in mediocrity.

Most highly rated recruits have dreams of playing in the NFL and even expect to.

Betting their football future on a mediocre product off bold promises of resurrection is not attractive compared to what other top program's can factually offer.

Win 8 or 9 games next year and we'll start cleaning up. No question.

I agree that the key is winning. Also getting our share of players get in the NFL will help.

All of this is eerily similar to the demise of the SWC...........as well as the ****** football......

Yes it does...The SWC started to implode when SMU got the Death Penalty 6-7 years later the conference went "poof" and the B12 was born. Now we have a Baylor scandal, 4 members have bailed for greener pastures, and this conference is weakening. The CS era didn't do us any favors either. At some point Texas needs to pull out and join a different conference, but also starting now, need to consistently/annually post winning seasons, win the conference title, get to some big bowls and win them. That may help keep Texas Talent in Texas. Com'on Tom! Get'er done!!

UT football will always be just fine. If all we care about is our program then we are on solid ground. There may be some ebb and flow from time to time but we have too much going for us to be down for long. All we need is a good coach that wins at least 9 games every year and the rest takes care of itself.

If, however, we want to be the anchor of a well regarded and stable conference, we have to be willing to bring others into the deal a little more than we've done in the past. We WAAYYY overplayed our hand with the LHN. It is a crappy network, that has very little of interest playing most of the time. Replaying old games may be cheap programming but it certainly isn't going to draw eyeballs.

    Joe,

Deloss was working on the destruction of the SWC earlier in the 80s. The plan got torpedoed but was brilliant, and would have ultimately surpassed the SEC and had nearly 30% of the TVs in America, with an unbelievable television contract.

as so goes Texas, so goes any conference they are in. Had the LHN come along in about 2004 it would have been lights out. Just like it will be like lights out after a few years with Herman and Texas is a fixture in the playoffs...year after year after year.
