trust me in this- not trying to beat a dead horse :deadhorse:, but DVR'd the NSD press conference and excellent coverage with Lowell Gallindo (what a Great host, love the guy) that included interviews with players, coaches and featured Tom Herman from time to time.
I thought Strong was good for the program. I loved his core values, Bedford and the OC. I think he is a bright light in the sea of darkness of the Sabans, the Meyers and the Harbaughs. And the king of win at all costs- "I love these kids as long as they are starters"- stoops and Briles.
Herman is the right guy. No doubt. Perfect for the program.
To Brad Austin and many more- you were right.
    Cannot wait for next year.

After throwing all my marbles in with Strong, I'm finding it hard to 100% commit to anything until I see success on the field.
I loved Charlies core values, recruiting and the way the players genuinely loved their coach.
However, Herman seems to have a clear vision of where he wants to take the team and how to do it.
I think that was Strong's problem. After the core values there was no clear vision. He seemed to be flying by the seat of his pants.
Win some games. Keep the kids in line and out of jail.

Gosh, Moon, it's really, REALLY hard to see success on the field until the Horns have actually played a game or two.
Strong is gone, so you might as well accept the new coach/regime or become a Strong fan at his new school.
We are far better off with Herman (no proof of this until we play some games) but if you are a UT fan, he's what you got- - take him or leave him.

Gosh hornsfan, maybe you should change your handle to Captain Obvious.
Did I complain about Strong being gone?
Or did I point out his deficiencies?
Did I not compliment the new coach?
Yes, this time around I'm going to wait on some results before I cream my jeans over the new coach. You said it yourself. "(no proof of this until we play some games) ".
You basically attack me and agree with me in the same post.
I like what I see from Herman so far.
And I will follow Strong and wish him success. I like the man.
So, don't question my loyalty to a program I've followed for over 40 years.

And as far as I'm concerned it's "Hook'em".
"Hook you" just sounds stupid. ;)

When Charlie Strong took over, I felt a sense of 'hope' surrounding his hire. Everyone knew that Mack Brown's program was soft, entitled, and had gone stale. For myself, I was prepared for reconstruction to be a slow and painful process but I had a lot of hope that Charlie Strong was going to be given the time and resources he needed. He was. I hoped he was the coach to rebuild a winner. He wasn't.

Herman, I think, steps into much higher expectations from the get-go than Strong did. The cupboard isn't bare and these kids should be so tired of losing that even the Dalai Lama reading Goodnight Moon outta send them charging onto the field ready to eat their own guts and ask for seconds. Unlike Charlie Strong, Tom Herman 'gets' the job. He knows Texas and I think he's the guy who can get all the BB's back into the box. I expect Tom Herman to win because the pieces are in place. I believe that he will.

Texas. Is about to become the new measuring stick for success in college football. It'll be like a Pete Carroll run at USC or a Jimmy Johnson run at Miama, Fl.

It's not going to be fair fight.

Now that we are over whatever that was, I will add that I think Herman is a good hire and will do well here. Honestly, the bar is pretty low right now.

For once, I agree with @moondog_LFZ. I thought his posts were fair and reasonable. Just like I was with Strong, I am in total wait and see with Herman. I am hopeful he'll do well, but I am not 100% bought in with any new coach until they earn it by proving their ability on the field.

I also agree with @Hoop that the bar is considerably lower. Strong took over an 8-9 win program and needed to take it back to the 10 win level. Herman takes over a 5-6 win program and while I still say coaches should be able to get to 8-5 at texas, even 7 wins is an improvement due to how low the bar is. That said, I would still like to see at least 8-5 this year.

I know some are convinced Herman is taking over considerable talent, maybe he is or is not, but he is taking a over a program with 3 consecutive 7 loss seasons. I honestly am not sure how big or the little the rebuild is. It will be tough to see how much of the problems are rebuilding and how much are Herman initially (which is why every coach gets 3 years). Another 7 loss season would certainly not be acceptable.

No need to apologize NRHorn. You were behind your coach and wanted him to succeed for the betterment of the program as a whole, to the bitter end. Most of us were right there with you to start with but we each have our jumping off point.
Like MoonDog, I am in wait and see mode this time around. And that has nothing to do with Herman either. I guess I just have coaching carousel fatigue. There has been 100% turn over 3 times over in the space of 5 years. Its crazy...

I am happy with the Herman hire, the change had to be made after that embarrassment of a finish to 2016. But I'm cautiously optimistic for the same reasons, MBs last couple of years were not that good, CS could never get it going as far as productivity of the field, in fact I had some hope he would demolish Kansas and maybe eek out a win over TCU, but his tem fell flat on its face in both games. So, I want and hope Herman does well and has a solid season to show the program is headed in the right direction. So I'm in the "wait and see" mode myself. I want to see more check marks in the W column this year, because that is what it will take from here out, wins to ramp up recruiting and get the program back to one of the top in the country.

This is like "With all due respect" followed by disrespect, "I don't mean to be political" followed by politcs, or "Sorry, but" followed by something you are not sorry about. :D

Sorry but, my point was not to 'beat a dead horse' about CS- and to say I was impressed with the interviews of the new coaching staff and as much as I liked CS i am happy with what I saw.
With all due respect, Stat I only said that in hopes this didn't turn into another Charlie Strong war. Not trying to be political here- just think that Powers hire had some undertones.

Nobody can anticipate and prepare for every eventuality that can occur during a college football game. I've watched games over the last three seasons and seen puzzled looks instead of adjustments and no plan as the team faced predictable circumstances.

Herman is a focused guy with high intellectual energy and great attention for detail. I have high expectations for good on-field performances. I expect to see well prepared players playing confidently and in-game adjustments that have us outscoring opponents in the third quarter.
