This didn't surprise me at all. Sherri Coale has come up with good game plans against us many times. We still nearly won, even with Brooke being way off her shooting game, Ariel on the bench much of the game (which we are used to), and Joyner not giving us much. I agree that Joyner stood around a lot, mostly out front. I'd like to see her cut down low more often, try to get open, and if she can't, dish back out or dish to Kelsey. And we're all waiting until she gets better on that 15 foot jump shot. Got to keep working on it. Letting Peyton Little get open for the three at the end was a real disappointment. But, we've got to regroup fast, forget this game, and get up big time for Baylor.

In a tight contest, fans are always going to remember the critical plays down the stretch that had a huge impact on the final result. Today, Bri had those plays, and not positive ones. I'm sure others did, too; but, it is what it is.

It's a team loss just like when it's a team win. But, when you to take a look at our games against the ranked opponents, there are things that had to go right in order to secure a win. Staying out of foul trouble is key for this team's best offensive players. Ariel got in first quarter foul trouble again.

And, unless one of our players is scoring 20+ points, we won't win against the ranked teams without 3-4 of our players scoring in double figures. Today, three players scored in double figures; but, Ariel barely fell in that category with 11 points, and Kelsey finished with 13 and Brooke with 16 points. So, no one was on fire. Joyner and Higgs couldn't find their flow offensively.

Against Baylor and Florida State, the above occurred. Pretty sure that also occurred in our home win against OU. Those are our wins over ranked teams so far this season.

Coaching decisions I don't understand include:

    - not taking Ariel out of the game for the last defensive series of the first quarter; she ends up picking up her second foul with just a few ticks left.

    - having Audrey-Anne and Kelsey on the floor at the same time; OU never played two post players at the same time; so, this duo was a liability with OU having 4 guards on the floor and driving to the basket or taking jump shots

    - I forget which quarter it was, but we had the last possession with maybe 15 seconds left; and, we had Bri on the floor. If we're going for the last shot, all 5 players on the court should be offensive-minded.

    - Jada Underwood played 4 minutes in the game; and she scored two baskets; one was mid-range jumper. So, she may have been able to help in that area as our only other player who was hitting mid-range jumpers was Kelsey. We never saw Jada in the second half I don't think. She looked really good in the first half. Could she have been a defensive liability on defense? Maybe. But, if she was in the game a bit more instead of Bri, I don't think OU would have sagged off of her defensively.

Come Monday night, we have to avoid early foul trouble, especially by Ariel. I hear the TV commentator talk about Texas' depth; but, I just don't see it. The only non-starter we have who is capable of scoring in double-figures against a ranked team is Lashann. That's it. So we just don't have a lot of room for error against ranked teams.

    As far as positives:

    - probably played or best game in Norman since we last won there in 2010
    - Bri with 9 rebounds and 6 assits; even hit one mid-range jump today; been a while since she has, I believe
    - we shot over 81% at the free throw line; maybe our best effort of the year
    - we out-rebounded OU 40-32
    - we shot 54% from 3-point land

    Negatives:

    - outscored 38-22 in the paint
    - 2 fast break points
    - I think 5 of our 15 turnovers came in the fourth quarter
    - scored only 14 points in the fourth quarter
    - lost every quarter except the third

Coach Aston needs to start running plays that will get Joyner in the post and get her the ball. Ou plays 4 guards, so Joyner should have been getting plays ran for her in the post. The last couple of games Joyner has been taking too many jump shots . She needs to start being aggressive and drive the ball to the basket and try to score closer to the rim, but more than anything she needs to get the ball in the post and stop settling for jump shots.

I've been saying since last year the way to beat Texas is to leave Bri unguarded and DT Ariel. Fortunately most coaches have been too stupid to figure that out. But having Bri in the game with less than 2 min and desperately needing a basket is on the coach so I do agree the loss is on Karen. The stats speak for themselves too, Bri 3 turnovers, Lashann 0 turnovers.

As much as I'm disappointed that we lost the game, our team was competitive until the final seconds. It's impressive that we were in it until the end when our big three, Brooke, Ariel and Joyner were all held under their average points per game. We had great looks at the basket and yet numerous shots would go into the basket only to spin out as a missed shot. We also could not take advantage of Pierre-Louis being on the bench. Our players got into foul trouble and their bench played better than our bench. It just wasn't our day.

I know Taylor is taking the heat for allowing Little to be open for the three point shot but I would have thought the coaches would have been emphasizing for her to stick close to her and not allow their best 3pt shooter to have an open shot (lessons learned from FSU).

Afterwards, when seeing that Mulkey was going to be guarding the inbound pass, why didn't we call a timeout and have Lang throw it in instead of Ariel (which is what we did on the final play of the game)?

As Moooo mentioned in his post, this game was a mix of OU playing a great game, our players being flat/fatigued and our coaches not calling their best game. Hopefully we'll learn from it and not allow a loss to turn into two losses. It's great to be in a conference that is so competitive and has high quality competition on the schedule.

the team did not play as well as they normally do. Brooke missed at least two short floaters that are almost automatic for her. Joyner did not have a good game. Just a bad game overall for most of the team and still the team was in position to pull it out. I am pretty sure we were in man to man on that inbounds play. Not sure who had responsibility for Peyton, Ariel or Brianne since they switch off so much but that is disturbing to lose a known 3pt shooter twice in two games. Lucked out against FSU, not so much versus OU. And Peyton came in shooting very poorly from BTA, The announcers kept making a point of that but she hit 3-6 against us.

Just need to regroup and get ready for BU on Monday. The league championship is still there for the taking. Short memory, Horns. Let 's get ready to sweep Baylor! :hookem2:

Taylor had 6 assists, 9 rebounds and 5 points. I get that we would want more points but you need to really value those rebounds and assists.

No doubt Taylor had very good stats in this game. Obviously, since she wasn't in foul trouble, she got more minutes on the court and was doing what the coaches ask of her. 5 points for her is a very good game when also rebounding and playing defense well. She is not gonna just all of a sudden become a double-digit point scorer for this team; nor is she gonna jack up three-pointers and hit on them (although I do recall her hitting one against Tennessee back in 2014); maybe she has had others. Of the starters, she is the fifth scoring option.

But, like all players, she made mistakes. Unfortunately, two of them came in the last minute of the game. And, she also had the ball stolen from behind by Ortiz after a defensive rebound; that's a lack of court awareness.

She definitely gives her all and plays with tremendous effort and energy. Scoring just isn't a big part of her game.

Just not what she is asked to do, imo. It's easy to nitpick selectively in this game. Lots to choose from. It was a team loss, just all the others have been team wins.

Agreed. Say Taylor sits and we don't miss defending that game ending three... what would the score be because she sat and we didn't get those 9 rebounds? Or six assists? Or 5 points? Not to mention the 2 steals and one block.

You can't pick one or two mistakes and conclude that cost us the game. And having another shooter that doesn't have Bre's defensive skills doesn't mean we win the game. I, for one, feel better when she is on the court.

I'm just saying... You need to make adjustments when the matchups are not in your favor. Defensively we make the OU post players look like Kodak All Americans every time we play them.

Brnkj, you're right. I hate playing Pierre-Louis because she eats our lunch every time. Her patented move, the "go one way, then switch back the other way toward the basket" move is totally predictable and pretty much unguardable by Kelsey, as it was Imani. It seems like anticipating the switch back and doing it when or before she does would cut it off, but I guess it's harder than it looks. I believe we tried a double a few times when someone was nearby, but got fouls. I hope to notice what other teams do with her. Keeping the ball away from her seems the best choice, which we were successful at quite a few times.

Ever since the spell where teams were sagging off her and leaving her wide open daring her to shoot, we've now gone the other direction and she's settling for way too many jumpers. Getting yourself to the rim is how you get fouled and get to the free throw line and she's one of our better free throw shooters.

Defensively speaking, anytime you allow total one-on-one isolation right under the basket it favors the offensive player tremendously. KState does pretty much the same thing against us.

I didn't see the game, but guessing from the box score, OU's low assist total and low 3-point numbers and our better rebounding numbers suggest they were either blowing by us 1 on 1 from the perimeter or dominating on post moves, or both, winning the individual battles.
