Haines wasn't very good most of the time, but some of the hyperbole on this thread is ludicrous.

In his career Haines had 12 interceptions (tied for 10th all time in Big-12) with 238 return yards (tied for 9th all time in Big-12). Not bad for a walk-on who only played 3 years.

    ^ This.

I mean, sure, I wish we had Earl Thomas back there, but come on...Not to mention this guy played through the team malaise we've had for 3 years.

It makes me feel better when I call out guys with 12 interceptions, and point out the things they didn't do.

We can just agree to disagree. I just don't think he was a very good Div. 1 safety. BUT that is completely separate from what I think of the guy as a person. I certainly respect what Mr. Haines has accomplished (walk-on starter, good grades, etc.). My respect for what he did comes from personal experience. I was a scholarshipped Div 1 athlete at a top 10 program, a 4-year starter, was Academic All-Conference all 4 years, and made All-Conference my senior season. I know how hard it is to put in several hours of practice, then time with the strength and conditioning staff, then in the training room to rehab, then on to a full load of classes, and then trying to stay awake to study effectively in the evenings. Wake up and do it all again. It's a full-time job, and to excel in the classroom with everything else going on is very difficult. So, I'm not blowing smoke when I say that I know what Mr. Haines has gone through and I understand the weight of his accomplishments. I've been there. (And my 40-time was much faster than Mr. Haines', if that's a prerequisite in order to comment.):rolleyes1:

Some folks seem to think objectively criticizing an athlete's performance means that the critic doesn't like or has no respect for the athlete. And that's just not true. But I didn't care for how Dylan's tweet came across when I first read it (not knowing it was a joke; and still not sure). And not knowing the dynamics between Haines and Ehlinger, Haines' comments sounded arrogant and brash. This is a forum for opinions, so I gave mine.

Just now even more shocked as a DI superstar you called out the kid as the worst DI safety ever who wasn't a superstar, wasn't recruited - yet walked on, started 3 years and excelled academically.
I would think someone of your Pedegree would have even more respect for Dylan than I did.
    And I'm the Chump.

NRHorn, your argument makes no sense. I brought up my background because there were insinuations, started by you, that I don't respect the kid. Which is silly. I understand what he went through and so I DO respect what the kid accomplished. Re-read that so it sinks in. But I just don't think he was a good safety, to put it nicely. There it is in a nut shell..... again. Go back and read why this entire conversation got started..... because the kid made an obnoxious, arrogant comment on social media (and for heaven's sake let's not re-hash that debate). That's why he got "called out", or however you want to overdramatize it. And at first you say that I'm unqualified to make such comments because I'm presumably unathletic and can't run a decent 40 time; but now you feel as though I shouldn't have an opinion because as it turns out I actually was a decent athlete. So which is it, dude? Hilarious. Too funny.

NRHorn, you're turning this discussion into a personal vendetta, and you continue to make this a tit-for-tat. You name call, and then you call foul when someone retailiates. You say "no offense", and then you proceed to say something personally offensive. Honestly, I don't care if you want to be offensive or a jerk. Just don't act so sanctimonious, and don't turn a simple difference in opinion into your Holy War. Grow up and let it go, dude.

God, the season can't come soon enough!

My mistake if I read too much into your original comment that he was 'the worst safety in DI and in the history of the UT program' as you disrespecting the kid.
i took your advice, reread it and see that you actually thought he was keen.

Take a hit off this peace pipe, MD you are reading way too much of my posts as serious. Trust me they are not.

Now excuse me while I Google sanctimonious I didn't graduate from college and wanna ensure you arent calling me a jive turkey.

    NR,

Let me help you. Instead of "sanctimonious", think Tom Osborne and/or Ken Hatfield, or more recently, the Baylor Board of Regents.

Vol Horn 4 Life Good Bye To All The Rest!

Just in case some clarification is needed. :smokin:

Jive Turkey was a derogatory slang word in African American Vernacular English (Ebonics), used to refer to someone who was unreliable, made empty promises, or who was full of bluster. Several funk groups in the late 1960s and 1970s used the term, particularly the Ohio Players in songs such as "Jive Turkey" on the album Skin Tight from 1974. The insult became widely known in the 1980s, particularly via television comedies (e.g., The Jeffersons). The term has been used by later television characters (e.g., Homer Simpson) in order to demonstrate that they are out of touch with modern youth trends, culture, and language. The term was also used in the film Semi-Pro starring Will Ferrell and in Weird Science starring Kelly LeBrock 1985. "Jive turkey" also garnered attention in the movie Trading Places. Jive turkey, however, was already falling into disuse when it was spoken by "hip" television characters in the 1970s, such as George Jefferson. Jive turkey is also a quick step dance in Germany in the 1930s.

Wasn't Saint Timoneous originally from ancient Athens where he excelled in the early Olympic games prior to his conversion and eventual Sainthood. I believe he was a sprinter and had a sub 4.3 40. That was way before Timoneous actually became Saint Timoneous, though.

He is tied for 5th on Texas' all time career in interceptions list too. Only other players on the list from the last 20 years are Nathan Vasher and Chris Carter.

If Haines was that bad, imagine the guys playing behind him...
