Cedric Benson was charged with driving while intoxicated early Saturday morning in Austin, Texas, according to an arrest affidavit. He said he could not recite the alphabet or count past three because of his NFL playing days.

Oh no, hate to see this. Either way, it's not good. If he was DUI again (allegedly), not good. If he wasn't and can't say the ABCs because of CTE, not good.

Sounds like a good reason as any to me not to do to that when they ask you.

It takes a minute to put an Uber or Lyft app on your phone and max 15 minutes to get a ride... oops, forgot ... Austin. They have ride shares there too though don't they? With alternatives so cheap and so available, DUI is only for those radically impatient to get home with their vehicle By the way, I've talked to waitstaff. When someone is overserved or even passed out, they will often use the intoxicated persons' phone to summon a ride to get them home.

Don't forget the Texas Dram Shop laws. If a bar or tavern serves a person until they are "obviously" drunk, lets them leave and they cause an accident, the bar can be held liable for the damages/injuries caused by the person. The injured party has to prove the person was obviously drunk which isn't easy. In short, when a patron is snot slinging drunk, a club manager should not allow them to leave, and best to call a cab or ride for them. Better to spend $100 for a patron to get home than to be sued for a couple of million in damages not to mention attorney fees and costs of court.

Yes, they have rideshare in Austin. A city-supported home-grown one is Ride Austin (works pretty well now). Other people use are Fare and Fasten. I think those are the top 3.

If memory serves, this isn't his first arrest for this particular offense. Might be time to look a little deeper than setting up a safe ride...
