To be honest, I didn't care about student government elections even when I was a student, and I care much less about them now. Accordingly, I don't know much about the rules.
Nevertheless, I'm sure political correctness is involved. It seems like a very minor violation to overturn an election, and the gays would be more pissed off than they were when Will & Grace went off the air if the roles were reversed and the gay dude had his victory completely taken away from him.
Furthermore, I am not aware of any scenario in real elections in which awarding victory to the loser is the appropriate remedy. Usually the remedy for campaign finance violations of whatever type is a civil fine or perhaps a criminal penalty. The winner may be removed through an expulsion, recall, or impeachment process, but the loser doesn't get to take office. If there's a secondary office (like VP), that person takes office, and if there isn't, the position is vacant until someone can appoint a person to complete the term or a special election can be held.
