Yeah, I heard all that on the radio this morning. I was waiting for this thread. The depth issue is most apparent at quarterback. It is thread bare to me. We have another thread on here mentioning Colt's injury against Alabama. Is Shane going to run the ball? Can Sam stay injury free at the collegiate level when he couldn't in high school?

Those two recruiting classes he mentioned though are very young. He almost acted like they should be ready to go in his comments. He said very quickly that we're not on Ohio State's and Alabama's level. I'm not sure anyone expected that.

Hell, we lost to Kansas last year.

The cake was still being baked though so Charlie gets a pass, you can't hurry a good bakery

When 22 starters come from 2 recruiting classes how can you expect depth.
Doesn't mean they are bad. Just young.

With millions of dollars at stake over their perceived abilities, it's hardly a wonder that new coaches temper excitement over the players they inherit and departing coaches brag about the talent they left behind.

True, but I think he's right.

Made zero sense to me when he tried to equate depth with recruiting rankings

I keep thinking of Chuck's statement, "I baked a cake". No, he didn't! Chef Chuck rounded up some pretty good ingredients to make a one, but what he and his assistant chefs created was a cake that didn't rise. It turned out to be more of a pancake.

Agreed. Charlie's perception of reality was always a bit off from the truth... in a lot of areas.

There is another thread talking about mack and charlie and lack of depth/other problems. It does not matter if it is one or both of their faults, I do agree, here in the present, from what I saw in the spring game that we lack depth. This season's results may be very injury (or injury free) dependent.

I would have preferred Herman just stick to "we lack depth" and "this is how I intend to build depth" instead of discussing previous recruiting classes and such. I do not want to hear any blaming the last coach from Herman. We lost to Kansas, so the fans know he did not take over a playoff team year one. We want to hear how he is going to turn a 5-7 win team into a 8-10 (or more) win team year one.

To bad they didn't ask him about the lack of talent in the secondary.

So basically he just told the majority of the team that they are crap?

I interpret that as coachspeak for "They aren't in shape, are soft mentally & physically, and have been poorly prepared." In essence, Charlie Strong was NOT "all hat and no cattle" because he didn't even have a hat, but he sure got a lot of Texas' money for driving the program further into the ground. Again, Power's legacy looks more and more like what the federal government used to call, "gross negligence"!

Well yeah.... They were a 5-7 team last year that lost to Kansas. I don't think anyone should be happy with that result.

Herman is playing a mind game. It's all about motivation and leverage. I believe he believes that he has the potential for a very talented team, and a very successful season.

He's a masterful drill Sargent. Beat them down and then build them up. If they resist or don't fall in line, they probably won't play.

Herman will get the best out of what he's got. Charlie and his staff didn't do that for whatever reasons. Based on that and what I saw in the spring game this team could go 10-2 if they stay healthy. Anything is possible but at worst we go 8-4 which would be a step in the right direction. If Strong was still here, Bedford would have been gone so new DC and we would have been looking at 7-5 at best and realistically 6-6.

And a whole lot more "uhs" and "justs" in the press conferences.

Charlie had a hat - a golden hat, but it tarnished quickly.
