Gridiron Now: ‘Texas family’ instrumental in 4-star safety Caden Sterns’ LSU-to-Texas switch

A loss on the recruiting trail for LSU is a gain for Texas as four-star safety Caden Sterns decommitted from the Tigers and committed to the Longhorns over the weekend.

“The big thing for me was family, both my family and the Texas family,” Sterns told GN Monday morning. “I took a visit to Texas on Saturday and I went in closed-minded. I wasn’t going to brush it off, but I had my mind made up with LSU and knew how loyal I was to LSU. But I left the visit with my eyes open.

“Growing up watching these two teams, LSU and Texas, I knew it was ultimately going to come down to these two. It came down to who made me feel like a priority and not just another recruit.”

Sterns (6 feet 1, 192 pounds) from Cibolo (Texas) Steele in the San Antonio area, is a top-five safety nationally and a overall top-40 prospect in the class of 2018. He had been committed to LSU since November 27, 2016, before his decommitment.

“It was very hard. I don’t think people really understand how hard it is to be a 17-year-old kid and trying not to upset or disappoint anybody,” Sterns said. “That’s why this process is so hard and people really don’t understand what it can do to a kid if the kid lets it overwhelm them.

“It was a hard decision and I prayed about it and talked about it with my family and took time to myself to figure it out. It was crazy because I had my mind made up on LSU and I’m very stubborn; once I have my mind made up I don’t change. But when I went to that Texas visit, it just opened my eyes in every aspect.”

Sterns says that in the end, he felt it best to stay at home.

Wow ... Herman is smart and works hard. I'm hopeful his results with the kids Charlie recruited will be good enough to keep momentum for this class going.
