Here's my take as to "why now?"

If you have the successor you want on campus this is the time to do it and NOT have it impact your program in recruiting and hiring. I know you guys want to make it some scandal but I don't think that's gonna stick.

Here's my quick/dirty list from Bob's angle as to the "why":
    1. I don't need "more money".
    2. I'm tired.
    3. My dad died at 54.
    4. I've had health scares in the past.
    5. I missed most of my boys' high school career and now they're playing their senior year.
    6. I have a younger daughter still at home.
    7. The program is hot, with a top recruiting class just now coming in.
    8. Logical successor is sitting there waiting to coach a top D1 team and he's just itching to get going.
    9. It seldom ends well in these positions. I can go out on my own terms (see #2).

You can't convince me Herman isn't in Stoops head.

If that were the case I think he'd stick it out another year, focus on getting that one W in the books and then take it to the house. I'd say the odds will favor OU this year. After that? Who knows?

Wonder about any recruiting fallout. Maybe not since Riley is an established coach there.

Work another full year just to try and get a single last win against Texas - which is not a gimme anyway? Doubtful

If you recall the reputation of the school before he showed up you know he was a plus for the place, just as Boren has been. And he was a successful coach.

As for his wife and his comments, I heard Royal say the same sort of thing on several occasions and it is true.

He was a protege of Coach Snyder and he is retiring and Snyder is still at it.

OU does not suck: it is a much better school than it was when Boren took over 20 year ago and Stoops is nothing like that Ahole Switzer except that he is a good coach.

Best wishes to him and to Lincoln Riley, of Muleshoe Texas and Mike Leach's old staff

And I hope we beat them thirty years in a row,.

Bob was a great coach. But the Mixon scandal plus the new blood new energy from Herman and some other factors that are not yet public have conspired to effect this change. Like a few folks above have said, the timing of this is what doesn't pass the smell test. I would bet that within the next six months a few things trickle out of Norman that fills in some of the information gaps.

All that said, I have no grudge against the guy. I hope he has a happy, healthy retirement.

He outcoached us time after time, won B12 championships and brought great energy to the game. That being said, I'm glad he's not the ou coach anymore.

Anyone else see irony in the tact that Stoops came in with an OC named Mike Leach and goes out turning his program over to a Leach disciple in Linc Riley?

He never ventures very far from Mike Locksley, because Locksley is the only coach in the history of sports that is so stupid he makes John Blake look smart.

Do not worry, I am confident both fanbases will forget again during their next period of sustained success.

You know, I read it and it rings true. I don't think it's a bunch of horse crap put together by PR lackeys.

He doesn't want any part of Herman. He's seeing how great Herman's 18 recruiting class is doing and he seeing the writing on the wall.

Poor guy. His extra year he has because he whined and the Big 12 changed its rules will be a transition year for a new head coach. Could not have happened to a snowflake more special.

The rule was ******** and never should have been adopted in the first place. Sitting out a year is fine but losing a year is beyond absurd.

    77,

Linc won't change the offense, and special snowflake will get to run the same offense as last year, only on October 14, he will have better views of the sky above Fair Park.

Fairbanks bolted like this when the NCAA hammer was coming down in 1973 (having a QB that didn't graduate high school is never a good thing). Barry was forced out, ("I didn't create the monster. All I did was feed it"). And he left the program the same way he found it; wildly successful and on a massive probation.

Stoops was never as beloved by the great unwashed as he should have been He lost to OSU more than any coach in school history and should have lost 3 more. He had problems winning bowl games and beating top level teams at the end. He came to Dallas 5 straight years with VASTLY superior teams, lost twice as 18 point favorites, and were one play away from losing the other 3.

This was likely going to be his last, best chance to win another national title. Playing at Ohio State really had no downside for them and the Big 12 was his for the taking. But another couple of Clemson style bowl beat downs weren't gonna play well.

The guy won a lot. A LOT. Programs like OU and us will take a lot out of a person. Out of your family. If Herman is successful here, playing them twice a year (October and December), will make both jobs less fun.

Wish him and his family well.

You guys got it all wrong. It's not Coach Herman he's skeered of, it's Kliff Kingsbury!:ousucksnana:

I assure you that Carol has raised MacKenzie not to hang out with scum like that, plus Special Snowflake would wrestle Bob to see which one gets to beat the **** out of him, if not worse.

He makes a move on Mckenzie and i promise you Carol will be faster than either Snowflake or Kingsbury. Who knows, maybe Linc will hire Kliff as OC in December,

Great coach and worthy opponent. I hope he's retiring because he wants to retire. As a fan I loved when we beat his teams and hated when we lost to them. I appreciate him for making football fun for both teams.

I don't think that's fair. Any time a coach steps down out of nowhere closer to the beginning of next season than the end of last one, people are going to guess it's either a health issue or an ethical issue behind the scenes.

All that stuff was true 4 or 5 months also except for the last half of #7. It's certainly quite odd.
