NCAA Transfer Season - 2017

A tid-bit on Nancy Mulkey.

 

I guess there's been no "other shoe to drop" with the UT program? i.e. no one is transferring out of Texas? That's good.

 

Te'a Cooper is transferring from Tenn to South Carolina. SEC must have less punitive in-conference transfer rules than the Big 12.

 

How do you mean? She has to sit out a year.

It will be fascinating to see how USC copes with losing their all-conference, #3 scorer, and leading rebounder Center, Alaina Coates.

 

IIRC, if a football or basketball player wants to transfer within the Big 12 conference, they have to get approval from the school they are leaving or lose an additional year of eligibility.

 

I searched, downloaded and read the rules in the Big 12 about transferring within the conference:

6.3 Intraconference Transfers. The eligibility of a student-athlete who transfers directly or indirectly from one Conference Member Institution to another shall be determined by NCAA regulations and the following Conference requirements. In the event NCAA regulations require the student-athlete to complete one full academic year in residence before being eligible to compete in a sport, the student-athlete shall also forfeit one season of competition in that sport. The waiver of a NCAA transfer regulation for a student-athlete does not negate the need for a waiver of this section.

6.3.1 4-2-4 Transfers. A 4-2-4 transfer student-athlete who is in compliance with NCAA Bylaw 14.5.6 must complete one full academic year in residence before being eligible to compete in a sport and forfeit one season of competition unless, in sports other than football or basketball, the director of athletics of the Conference Member Institution of initial enrollment consents in writing to the student-athlete’s enrollment at the second Conference Member Institution. Any consent given relating to the indirect intraconference transfer may be unconditional or conditioned on the student-athlete completing one full academic year in residence at the second conference Member Institution before competing.​

So you have to sit out one year and you lose one year of eligibility (redshirt won't help) IF you play in football or basketball.

 

Thanks, racerx. I would have bet the farm the B12 two-year rule would not apply to any women's sport.

 

Not really a surprise but official now...

 

We actually won the national championship with out Coates so I think we will cope very well. All American A'ja Wilson is still here we also have Alexis Jennings coming in from Kentucky, Freshman LaDaziah Williams, and KiKi Herbert Harrigan all of whom are 6'3" and above so we will be just fine in the post.

 

That's a better situation for Nancy. She lacks the strength and speed to compete in the Big 12. She should be able to contribute after sitting out a year and make an impact at Rice where C-USA opponents don't have the post size to match her.

 

Illuminating as Sherri Coale discusses the increase transfers in the women's game and possibly gives us some clue as to why Nancy and Chelsea transferred. Surprised that Chelsea transferred to Arkansas as it's a program a step or two down from Oklahoma.

Thanks for sharing that. I've always liked Sherri Coale and I think her answer about transferring was very thoughtful. And, she's probably correct that it all goes back to recruiting and making mistakes and getting the "wrong kids" for your program.

 

Arkansas won't be down for long. They have Mike Neighbors now, who took Washington to new heights while he was there (including the Final Four in 2016).

 

I'm not incredibly familiar with Neighbors prior to UW but I want to see how he does when he doesn't have the most prolific women's scorer in history to fall back on.

Saw a tweet that Diamond DeSheilds is turning Pro and leaving Tennessee in a bit of odd timing

 

She missed the draft - I guess she could start overseas but most of those leagues don't kick off for a few months. Of course, unless her father squandered his MLB money, she's not hurting for cash. Tough blow to TENN.

 

I guess she got tired of their coach screaming at the team. Just an unsubstantiated comment. But man that guy has issues with his "communications"

 

I have to disagree, I have known at least 5 players who have either played or been recruited by Mike. He is very up front with them, from that first recruiting text to that last hug on senior day. Players know exactly what they're getting from him. A couch who is going to push you harder than you've ever been pushed before, and they know what that looks like when they see him in practice or on the sidelines.

The sad part about coaches like him and Frank Martin (whom I've also met and attended a clinic) is that the media and camera's don't catch him loving the kids just as hard as they push them. For every time they show him yelling of flailing their arms they DON'T see Frank getting on a plane 3 days in a row traveling back and forth from practice to visit a player who's single mother had just passed away. Or the time Mike literally gave the coat off his back to a homeless gentleman he met outside of the arena once. There is no wonder they have players who would literally "run through a brick wall" if he asked.

 

Another hit for Texas Tech. That makes 3 outgoing transfers, the loss of their two 2018 verbal commitments, and the loss of two assistant coaches. Don't see how Coach Whitaker can overcome all these personnel issues and hang on to her job; I hate to say this, but Tech would be better off dismissing her now and getting the best coach their money can buy and have the new staff try to put together a good 2018 recruiting class.

I'm very surprised there was no official statement from Texas on Tasia's transfer. If I'm not mistaken, there were official statements for Sara Hattis and Nekia Jones. I forget the names of who else has transferred out (PG out of Canada), but it seems as if the norm has been to release a statement.

 

I just read the article on Tasia again and noticed this:
"The 5-foot-8 guard..."
They need to recalibrate their measuring tape - Tasia might be 5-5.

Haley Troup is transferring from South Carolina. She is from Alabama and visited last year. She was going to be a freshman and took the summer trip with the SC team. Didn't make it to the first day of school so don't know how that effects her eligibility.

 

Good find Flash.

Troup is headed to Missouri. She'll sit out a year. Her heart wasn't at SC since the coach that recruited her left SC to be the HC at Old Dominion.
