Former NFL quarterback Vince Young suffered a torn hamstring that will force him to miss the start of the Saskatchewan Roughriders' CFL season, according to ESPN.com. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...ing-injury-will-miss-start-of-2017-cfl-season
Yep! I feel tired and sore just watching a football game. Can't even imagine trying to play in one, or even practice for that matter.
From the language, I am curious whether this is truly it or whether they would look at him again after he recovers...by waiving him, it allows them to keep someone else on the active roster through pre-season.
This doesn't make Vince look good. Might be true, but not the way to go about getting what you want. Get in shape, bust your ***, then go make a team. Until then, keep the trash talk to yourself. One of the best college QB's of all time, if not THE best, and certainly the most dominant. https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...-rips-ryan-fitzpatrick-jeff-fisher/431650001/
Doesn't make Fisher look good either. At least it dispells a few of the myths that were going around, except for the "VY throws sidearm" myth which it perpetuated. If anything, he tended to short-arm throws, not side-arm them.
I saw Vince at an oil & gas convention in Houston in February. Richmond McGee's company brought him in to sign autographs and take pictures (had the USC National Championship game on the TV in the booth). Vince looked "thick" then. Not fat, but appeared to be bigger than his NFL playing weight. Just idle speculating on my part, but maybe the hamstring issue was a result of him not being in the best of shape at the time it happened. I'd love to see him back in the NFL. The window of opportunity is certainly closing but considering the weak performances by NFL back-up QB's in the last year or two, hope there's a spot for him somewhere.
i can totally see that. BUT i remember watching end-of-career Jordan and end-of-career Magic. They were big men who just looked "bigger." Lord knows they burnt more calories in a day than I do in two weeks, but I think people tend to go one way or the other as they age. I'm not saying that it's "no fault of their own," but I know those NBA guys are exceptional athletes in exceptional condition every April and May, no exception.
X, Not sure any NBA player burns many calories since they only seem to put an effort into the last 3-5 minutes of a game. I've seen less loafing in the homeless "campgrounds" under Houston freeways.
I didn't read the whole article, but in a piece in the SA Express-News this morning, Vince threw the race card and blamed everybody but himself for not making it in the NFL. His soft little sidearm throws were never gonna cut it in the NFL. I was amazed he was drafted as high as he was. He got a fair shake. He just wasn't good enough for the NFL, period.
I call BS! One of his last starts for the Eagles he threw for over 400 yards. He also threw 4 INTs. But he won the game. Against the Patriots.
I think VY was talented enough but just immature. I can’t judge because if I had become an instant millionaire in my early 20’s I probably would not have done any better.
The interview likely nailed shut the NFL coffin but...he does have a point about Fitzpatrick. For all of VY's flaws in the physical game, at least he won games, something that Fitzpatrick has major issues accomplishing with more than one franchise.
If VY was afforded the same leniency as a Cam Newton he would probably still be in the NFL. It's proven now just how bad a head coach Fisher was and the worst place for VY to be.
ran into him at an alum event a few years and said hello and, apropos nothing, he starts ragging on Fisher. I felt like telling him to get a life. Great QB but totally immature; he would make a good team with Johnny Football, another egomaniacal great jock. In Vince's case he had a less than optimal childhood and less brains than the average armadillo
Speaking of BS, the Eagles lost that game to the Pats 38-20. http://www.espn.com/nfl/game?gameId=311127021

Was just about to post that, Clean. He had an 80 passer rating in that game. If we're using that game as a microcosm of a season's worth of play (even though it was one of the biggest yardage games of his career and not indicative of what VY was typically capable of), he would have finished 25th in the NFL in passer rating last season. Oh, and that game was nearly 6 years ago, so...
Great. Does this mean he'll be back on Texas Gameday talking about how the guys should just have fun and play foo-ball?
All I can say of his brief NFL career is that he was a winner despite the immaturity he displayed. He finished with a record of 31-19 or something like that.
There's a difference between "can't throw or play pro ball" and "can't play it at a level where he'd succeed in the long term." His best NFL games were street ball meanderings into highlight reel greatness, much like your copyright-protected clip. His finest season (cut short by injury) had a good heaping of leadership, no picks, and poise, but he still only averaged 10.3 completions for 139 yards per game. That's just not how the NFL works any longer. I think if it was 2011, his attitude was better, and this was all still fresh in people's minds, there might be a few GMs to take a risk on him.
Here's the problem with blaming Tennessee for derailing his NFL career: four other teams brought him in and none of them were blown away by his play. And now even the CFL says "Thanks anyway".
