HBO mostly alerted me to this series although I was aware of it from a web search on the spelling of 'Petyr', used in the Hyperion series by Dan Simmons. I was only familiar with the 'Peter' spelling until then. At any rate, I haven't hit any of the fan sites yet but was wondering if anyone knew why the seasons (summer, winter, spring and fall) were not of fixed length. The opening credits do feature the sun a couple of times and the world appears to be concave, like a Dyson sphere, but that is more probably artistic license.
The seasons are not a fixed length because "science" doesn't existst in this realm. Magic is returning to the land and a lot of the "dangerous" elements are associated with the winter. I don't know how much to say without spoiling something, so I will leave it at that. Renly = Gay is definitely present in the novels, but it is much more an "implied" thing. The scene with the Lord of Flowers from the show did not happen as I recall.
The show seems to seep a kind of agnosticism -- not indebted to presenting a morality tale. I like tits and scenes where naked women prove their sexual worth by fingering each other's asses. Check. The Imp is the best character, as noted, and the actor playing him is tearing it up in big chunks. He is awesome. The kid playing the young daughter and her teacher are great. Prolly the show's greatest hope for a hero, though I can tell that the person who seems a hero at first may turn yella or evil later, and vice versa. King Geoffrey is a perfectly detestable character who I enjoy hating, though I fear his comeuppance will not be grisly enough, perhaps not forthcoming at all. John Snow is obviously going to be another serious contender. The classic story arc has those that lose the father early returning with vengeance. My request: Never stop producing this show. Keep it churning like a steel mill 24-7 until we catch up with the books. Will this series take 15 years to complete? I understand that there are only three of 7 books on the shelves. Hmmm. Oh, and I eagerly await both dragons and the coming of winter. I have the idea that, after all of the throne gaming is largely done, the White Walkers are going to come and reset the clocks of allegiance to overall unity.
Joe, I can honestly say that through book four, the fate of Syrio is still unknown. Many t"think" he's dead but there's been no proof. Actually, there are 7 books, 4 are on the shelves, the 5th will be out next month supposedly. Book four is very good, but believe it or not, it introduces a whole lot of previously minor characters and some unknowns, and contains very little about the "current" crop. My suspicion is that because of this, the next book will be very Jon, Arya, Danny, centric.
I like Tyrion because he's smart and he actually tries to help others who are in similar circumstances to him. It might not show up in the show because I don't have HBO, but Tyrion seems to have a real connection with Jon Snow and Bran Stark.
man, last night.. you kind of knew what was coming, but it was no less dramatic. Certainly whets the appetite for season 2. Season 2 : Spring 2012.. ..that seems like forever from now.
It says something about the quality of the show when, after they kill off two of my favorite characters near the end of Season 1, I'm nonetheless eagerly anticipating Season 2.
I have seen Eps 1-5 and am totally hooked. I worry about being able to keep everything straight on who is who during the break between seasons 1 and 2.
Started reading the books and have finished the first 2 in the series. Ordered 'A Storm of Swords' and will try and zip through that and all the rest before football season. Insane story. People dying left and right. The show didn't do the battle scenes justice in season one. I'm hoping season two gets a bump in that regard. There's a ton of warring in season two, but I'm guessing budget is the main consideration whether to shoot the battle scene stuff. The way the book does it, the scene would need to be massive and elaborate. Looking forward to the rest of the books and season two on HBO in the spring.
I think seeing some of the HBO series helps if you're starting the books. I bought the first four two days ago at Costco ($20) and am enjoying the first book. I'm not a fan of this genre usually. Tolkien never interested me. This series does. So far, I like the real feel of the characters.
I know I am very late to the party but just started GOT on demand and watched them all in the last 72 hours. What a fabulous show. Can anyone recommend where to start in the books for someone who has seen Season 1 and wants to start reading from that point forwards?
