How much our history do you think the Left is willing to hide/erase? Seems like the movement isn't satisfied with just tearing down Confederate monuments anymore. Charlie Rose asked Al Sharpton about the Jefferson Memorial and the answer was predictable; it offends Sharpton and public funds support it.

If they're serious, they've got a lot of work to do. George Washington was a slave owner, as Trump pointed out. So, there's that large, phallic symbol in D.C. that will have to be removed along with the Jefferson Memorial. There's the matter of the one dollar bill and, of course, there's the names of our nation's capital and a left-coast state too. There's Mt. Rushmore (2 slave owners plus two other racist white guys) and Atlanta's Stone Mountain (holy cow, what was Atlanta thinking?). The list is endless.

Will this rival Mao's Cultural Revolution or is this just a long, hot summer that will be forgotten once football season starts?

I've said on this board that Glorification of the Lost Cause has been way overdone across the south in terms of monuments, school names, street names, etc. But I'm sickened to see destruction of memorials which expressed the heartfelt sentiments of the people who built them. Whatever their motivations, the vandals are in no way advancing understanding, compassion and unity.

Before we tear down the Jefferson Memorial, I think we should rename July and August ... named for people who by today's standards were cruel, homicidal barbarians. Not serious by the way. Jefferson is a pretty bizarre target for the radical left. A product of his time and station, he was a slave owner, but he loved black people.

Polling suggests that, politically at least, it is a good idea to keep triggering Democrats over these statues

As usual, the offending is only allowed to flow one direction. It's OK to suggest we just drop the National Anthem at ballgames since it makes some folks uncomfortable and causes protests, which make others uncomfortable. But it's NOT ok to say, you removing the statues makes me angry, so you should just stop doing it.

Let's face it, the left are nothing but bullies. Seriously, their leaders encourage this. Then the sheep go out and do the dirty work (but they enjoy it). Free speech? Nope not anymore because the libs will make sure of this. We've seen way too many examples. I hate the KKK because they are evil and full of hate. They wouldn't even exist if it weren't for the Democratic party. But I don't see them showing up not allowing people to speak on college campuses. I prefer them stay isolated from the rest of the nation. The Black Panthers were outside of voting sites with baseball bats. The Lib party brought this on all of us. I swear that party is such a drag on our nation.

it really isn't funny. You know it won't be long before the escalation and retaliation urge takes hold of both sides and the MLK, Cesar Chavez statues, et al will start being vandalized and ripped down as well.

This is not good for any of us.

Snowflakes act out to protect their perceived identity. Conservatives by definition are concerned with protecting the old ways that which do not need changing and/or fixing. Big difference.

While we are at it, can we erase 1986-1989 and 2010-2016 Texas Football history? Asking for a friend.

Uhmm..... all these statues and monuments honoring evil slave owners and racist in America. One might think that all the statues and monuments honoring racist might indicate that America sure seems to be racist. But according to some I'm just making all this up. Denial is a hell of a thing.

Was MLK or Cesar Chavez evil racist or fight in a losing war in order to keep slavery? Why would their statues or monuments be vandalized or ripped down?

I always thought that one of the main reasons you study history is so you don't repeat the mistakes of the past. If we erase history does that mean we're due for more genocide, another holocaust, more fascist dictators?

Maybe that's what these like ratfat and others like him really want anyway. Bait and switch when society doesn't know what's coming? After all Hitler was going to unite Germany after the evil Treaty of Versailles went way to far and destroyed German unity, Stalin was going to unite Russia and as someone pointed out on another thread, ending slavery was not Lincoln's primary motive.

I don't think people like ratfat will ever be happy until they have control of all the people, money and resources. Creating a false reality helps them slowly take more and more until they are the fascist dictators.

There you go with the Jedi mind trick. Take a picture of the statues and monuments, tear the evil racist things down and put the pictures in a textbook and let people know about the evil, racist, people in history. See there, see how easy that was? And black people will never have control of anything because America was built on and is a system of white supremacy.

And that's what's getting lost in this. If violence is deemed appropriate to achieve a political goal, then the other side will eventually exercise violence. Dumbasses are equating Antifa to the military personnel who went to Normandy to fight Nazi Germany. They're actually much more like the Red Front thugs of the German Communists who were such animals and fostered such chaos that people turned to the Nazis to shut them down.

That is already beginning to happen. I feel this incident was a reaction to all the violence, rioting, and protesting free speech by the left. People are sick and tired of one side getting away with it, or having it explained away. You can only turn the other cheek so many times before you want to stick up for the values you hold. We must remember, many conservative values have changed significantly in a very short amount of time, and people who don't agree with them are supposed to smile, keep their mouths shut lest they be called homophobic, racist, misogynist, Islamophobic, fill in the blank.
I certainly don't condone what White Supremacists or Nazis were doing/saying, but, I think what Trump was clumsily attempting to express was some of the people protesting just wanted the statue to remain. Hence, there were some "good people". I also think there were some people on the other side that merely wanted to support removing the statue, and had no intention of violence.

We need to tighten up free speech and make it equal, or I fear that there will be many more incidents like the one in Virginia. The tail is wagging the dog. The vast majority of Americans want the statues left alone. If I were a conspiracy theory type, I would almost think this was one more thing the left was throwing against the wall to make Trump look bad. Every week it is something new and different. Last week, North Korea. Weeks before, Russia. I'm no big fan of Trump, but it is very hard to prove a negative, and I honestly don't think he is a racist. He has denounced the actions many times, but it is never enough for the media. It must be very frustrating.

A 90 year old bust of Abe Lincoln was destroyed overnight in Chicago. One city council man came to the defense of the Great Emancipator and was roundly slammed on social media.

Something called "Vice Magazine", which is co-owned by Murdock and ABC/Disney, published an article called "Let's Blow Up Mt. Rushmore" and then retitled it "Let's Get Rid of Mt. Rushmore". The article says "Let’s take with us the righteous ideas and beliefs and leave everything else on the pyre", which is scarily reminiscent of Joe Fan's quote from Orwell (above). http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2017/08/17/vice-editor-lets-blow-mount-rushmore/

Meanwhile CNN posted a map showing the locations of 1.500 Confederate monuments and symbols, just in case antifas were having trouble finding them.

Enough about the statues. I bet if the lunatic fringe quit running around with Nazi flags and chanting nazi slogans, the mythical antifa won't show up. The problem that i have is that the march on display last weekend was the "Sunday Best" of the far right. There was communication to not have nazi stuff, to wear khakis and polos, to try to not be offensive.

Personally, I wish both sides would model the methods of MLK.

I'm somewhat indifferent to the statues although were I a black father I can't imagine walking through the park and explaining these statues to my son. I think the "erasing history" talking point lacks validity when these statues were erected decades/centuries after the act. Many were erected during the run up to civil rights movement. Now why do you think local governments in the South would erect monuments to Civil War heroes in the 40's, 50's and 60's? That alone should be a clue as to the purpose of these statues.

As a white male, they don't bother me but I also empathize wit a black teenage boy in Charlottsville that gathered hundreds of signatures in his own town in support of removing the statue. In fact, I'd argue the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue was Democracy in action.

All the people that took it upon themselves to drive to Charlottesville to protest what is a local issue need to wake up. That goes for white supremacists and antifa.
