The fact that they keep calling Hogg a "confederate statue" feels a lot like living in a dumber version of 1984. Bad journalism is bad.
By all means we certainly can change the name. The fact that some on this board are mad about racist statues being removed is prove that racism won't magically disappear.
Okay. Erected during the period of Jim Crow and segregation: The University of Texas was founded during the period of Jim Crow and segregation and was founded by Confederate veterans and a Confederate veteran Governor. At least 16 of the first regents of the University of Texas were Confederate veterans. So by Fenves' logic, we should disband remove all of the University of Texas. Represents subjugation of African Americans: No, the statues represent the history/heritage of a whole lot of folks and honor the sacrifice made by our ancestors. White supremacists use them to symbolize hatred and bigotry: No. see above. The statement is an opinion not based in fact and is incorrect on many levels.
The bottom line is that the statues represent evil, and Racism in America and should be treated like what they are. Pieces of scrap metal.
The "task force" thing is a smoke screen. Fenves has already shown he will override the opinion of such a commission if it does not give him the answer he wants, and he's being sued over it. Remember this is the guy who, if it was only up to him, would still have our football team being coached by Charlie Strong.
Either the mods are gonna get this race baiting POS Rattfatt out of here or in the name of protesting racism the civil members here need to band together and all put his profile on ignore. There's already been several instances he's called people here racist. He's brought nothing to any discussion but insults and allegations of racism towards a whole race and our members who disagree with him.
Here is a list of the members on Fenves' 2015 task force on Confederate monuments: Gregory Vincent, African American, northern origin- native of New York - graduated from a college in New York and attended law school in Ohio. Daina Berry, African American. Graduated from UCLA. Courses taught at Texas include Gender and slavery in the United States,The domestic slave trade and Antebellum slavery. Edmund Ted Gordon, African American, graduated from Stanford and Miami. Was chair of the African diaspora studies at Texas. Marisa Swanson, African American - Texan. Texas 40 acres scholar. Rohit Mandalapu Origin unkown, UT student working to remove Confederate statues. Xavier Rotnovsky - Origin unknown, UT student working to remove Confederate statues. Carlos Martinez - Hispanic Texan, graduated St Marys and UT Law. Hector De Leon- Hispanic Texas, graduated UT BA and UT Law. Brian Wilkey - Origin is Northern from Vandalia, Ohio and graduated from Miami University of Ohio, was UT graduate student. Lorraine Pangle - Origin is northern. Graduated Yale, University of Toronto and University of Chicago. Her quote: "Thomas Jefferson may be an inspiring figure from our past, but he is hardly the best symbol for America's future." Frederick Fritz Steiner- Origin is northern, born Dayton Ohio, graduate of the University of Cincinnati, graduate of University of Pennsylvania. Laaura Beckworth - Origin is Texan, born in Houston Graduate of university of North Carolina and UT law. That is the task force Fenves refers to for justification for the removal of Confederate statues. Fenves - Origin is northern, raised in central Illinois, attended high school outside of Pittsburg, graduated from Cornell and Cal Berkley. It is past time to clean out the rat's nest that now is in control of our University. We either organize and speak up or just walk away and take our money with us.
Hogg was ten years old when the war to preserve the union that also got rid of slavery began. So he for sure has to be moved. How about we put up a statue of Ann Richards. She was a governor who went to work as a tobacco lobbyist after she was turned out and built a lot of prisons while she was governor. On second thought, maybe not. She went to Baylor
This tells me that you have NEVER even bothered to LOOK at what those famous TEXANS did for the State during its infancy. But then again, facts tend not to be your strong suit, so it doesn't surprise me... Further, universities are supposed to be places where LEARNING takes place and a free exchange of ideas occurs. For Fenves et al to mollycoddle the fringe elements says he doesn't need the money from the masses that actually want EDUCATION to be taking place. Let the libtards pony up for once...
Perhaps UT should also renounce their Football national championships that were won by all white teams. Take down any statues (i.e. trophies) associated with that dark period of segregation in college athletics. Come on Fenves, show us how strong your convictions really are.
The best I can come up with is Hogg appears to be Confederate, and Fenves doesn't want anything remotely associated with the Confederacy on campus. How sad that appearances outweight facts. This would probably make Fenves **** a brick. "In the national campaign of 1884 he succeeded in winning enough black votes from the Republicans to make Smith County a Democratic stronghold." https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/fho17
And...if it is all about appearances, then Fenves should probably take steps to remove the Longhorn logo since, after all, it has been appropriated by certain groups engaged in illegal activities (ie. prison gangs). According to Fenves and his email, it is ALL about how 'symbols' are being used...and if the logo is being misused by a very small few people, then, like statues, it too must go...unless, as usual, Fenves is talking out of an orifice typically used for other functions.
It seems to be guilt by association since he was a proponent of pensions for the veterans...and to the small-minded, that outweighs every single GOOD thing he did for the State and that is documented as part of his history.
I don't think Hogg is Confederate. My guess is being the son of a Confederate veteran is enough for people to lump Hogg into the 'Confederate' category.
Being an asian named Robert Lee is apparently enough nowadays, as "King Fenves the Unwise" would probably say that anyone, including asians, with similar names to a confederate or anyone of confederate descent symbolizes "the subjugation of african-americans, neo-nazis and white supremacy."
