I'm really enjoying thinking about those stats...

Great news - I've been on the JB bandwagon since we signed him and am convinced that getting over the sophomore yips makes him an NFL caliber receiver. Plus, with the depth that we (allegedly) have at receiver, having someone move up the chart and win a starting job usually means they're really elevating their game.

If the pee ain't orange, you ain't all in.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

^^^^ This. Our WR's are indeed an embarrassment of riches....

When the Horns have 'em spread with 3 to 4 wides including any combination of these WR's mentioned above... someone will be open most often. Nightmares for opposing Coaches and DB's, especially with the height & athleticism of Johnson & Burt. Remember the spring game? Our DB's couldn't cover Johnson very well - he had what, 7-8 catches including a TD.

These receivers should really open up the run options and play-action for the Offense.

    Good things ahead!:hookem:

Herman: UT Has Enough Talent To 'Be In Every Game This Season'
At the Texas Longhorns' annual kickoff luncheon Wednesday, first-year coach Tom Herman sounded positive, saying his team has enough talent to "be in every game this season."

    http://texas.247sports.com/Article/...ent-To-Be-In-Every-Game-This-Season-106438107

.... "I don't know how good we'll be. Let me explain what I mean by that. I think we do have a lot of talent - or enough talent.

"It's like money. I've never met anyone who said, 'I have too much money.' Talent is kind of the same way - you can never have too much. But I think we have enough. With the starting 22 and the key backups who jog out there, I think we can be in every game this year. I really believe that."

Herman went on to say, "Our players know from talking to their friends on other teams just how hard we've been training versus the rest of the country and college football and that there's no doubts in their minds that they are the best-trained team in America and that they'll be ready." .....

There sure is a lot of orange kool aid going around. Boo isn't going to do anything IF he's lying flat on his back or running for his life. Anyone remember David Ash or Colt's sophomore season? I would like to drink the kool aid too, but a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. A freshman TE is going to miss some blocks no matter how well he's coached, to go along with a thin OL. And, expecting a defense to go from ranked 100 to top 20 is a very lofty goal even with Mike Ditka as DC.

I hope this coaching staff is different, but every year we hear the same thing. Just a dose of reality to go along with the kool aid. Like Rick mentioned, still a lot of IF's.

How did this position get so cursed?

Patterson was the enabler, but I am coming around to the opinion that this was Mack's last curse.

Greg Davis and Bobby Kennedy had a lot to do with it. Davis was convinced that moving around guys like Shipley and Dan Buckner into a spot where a TE used to be would create mismatches like it did in the 2008 OU game. It's not a horrible strategy. But once teams figure out flaws on the line, and your WR corps is still trying to figure out how to create those mismatches (not everyone is a Shipley), then you "need" an actual TE running routes.

Since Kennedy was in charge of offensive skill position recruiting from 08-10, we kind of **** the bed in getting qualified TEs.

Since then, our only use of TEs in the offensive scheme has been blocking (and we've had some decent blockers) and gimmick receivers like Beck against Baylor last year. If we had gone after guys with talents similar to Bo Scaife or even Brock Edwards, we'd have some viable catch/block combo guys.

As an experiment, I'd love to see the staff go all-in on getting Brewer and Leitao (post-suspension) tons of reps in practice and give them a game (like SJSU or Tech or someone with a **** defense) to be "the man" and surprise the TV commentators and fans. Like double-digit catches on drag routes and a couple of TDs or something.

The TE drags is one of the best routes in football.

I think that's the big point. Who wants to go play tight end where you're going to get about 30 balls thrown at you all season? We've created that reputation, and the lack of good tight ends has only exacerbated the issue. So it's sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy that's only going to get fixed when the offense starts using them as more than glorified tackles.

This post made me think of the thread of great tight ends as far back as I can remember: Lawrence Sampleton, William Harris, Bobby Micho (who probably wasn't great, but his team went undefeated, so there's that...), then the dark ages(although Kerry Cash was solid) ... then back on track with Pat Fitzgerald, Jermichael Finley, Bo Scaiff (when he had both knees working), David Thomas. Just kept going! Well... until it stopped, I guess.

Irby's injury at the beginning of 2008 forced Davis' hand to switch to the "No TE, mismatch" system of pass-catcher management. Bobby Kennedy remains the most frustrating of all former assistant coaches for his nonreliance on TEs, inability to coach WRs up, and lack of recruiting contributors in Mack's waning years.

speaking of which, who recruited the Big 3 receivers in 2000? The #1, #2, and #5 WR in the country.

My last memory of smart use of the TE by us was Jermichael Finley in the first half of the 2007 ou game. He killed them. But we didnt use him in the 2nd half, or the rest of the season. He got the message and left after his sophomore year (taken in 3rd round) and played 6 good years Green Bay ended early by injury.

I need to rummage around in the garage for some tangled barbed wire, some broken glass, charcoal briquets I can set on fire, throw them all outside in a patch of bull nettle and grass burrs and goat heads and roll around in all of it to get ready for the Maryland game.

I'm ready to come out swinging.

Uh, that's not meaning to come out. Swinging. No, not that.
