The passing of Walter Becker reminds me of my wonderful years in college at Trinity long ago. So many memories... this is for him...

    Falling Tiles

    I wake up in confusion
    Looking around at the present
    Having survived the past
    Panic in the streets
    And judgment of the innocent

    I can't stand losing again
    Not of my own glory
But of the friends I know
    Falling tiles from my roof
    How they shatter our story

Take my hand if you feel it too
We will smile for as long as we can take it
I wonder if anyone will remember
The children play in the park
Never knowing I once owned it

    Where is my purpose
I spent so much time laughing
    Maybe that's all it was
A life of raising a glass with friends
And remembering in their time of passing

I remember when their first album came out in '73 as I recall. Really liked their music and was fortunate to see them in concert several times. RIP Walter...thanks for the music and great memories.

I still remember the first time I ever heard Do It Again in a friends car. He had an amazing stereo and I remember how sophisticated and cool the song sounded. This not long after it was first released. Steely Dan was a measure of your taste in music. Kind of a hipsters choice because of the cynical, intellectual lyrics and the jazz overtones... they paid homage or sampled or whatever you want to call it Horace Silver on Riki Don't Lose That Number. They were big Blue Note fans. Aja was huge in my college days. Just a major achievement and we were all pleased to be in on the ground floor years earlier when it was released. Instead of thinking they were sell-outs, we thought they had truly arrived (as mentioned in the liner notes to the album) and got the accolades they deserved.
