I hate to be a Donnie downer, but I am by no means ready to say the Horns are back. Man we should all be used to seeing all of this by now. Does it feel different this year? Hmmm, we shall see in due time I guess. Just remember when...

A strong armed QB took over for Colt McCoy in the MNC game in 2009, but threw 4 picks, but still almost brought the Horns all the way back and a lot of us thought all was going to be well at Texas because he was only a Freshman.

Remember 2010, when the Horns got drilled by UCLA, but got fired up to beat a strong Nebraska team on the road and a lot of us thought all was going to be well with the Horns. Ooops, they stunk it up at home against Iowa State in their next game. Nobody saw that coming. Thus, a losing season!

Remember 2015? Another hot Freshman QB. Blew up against Cal. Beat OU and once again, some of our brilliant sports writers were even predicting a Big XII championship! And a lot of us thought all would be well with our Horns once again. Oh no, not again! Iowa State shuts out our Horns on Halloween Day! And another losing season.

And lastly, remember our new coach. He loves to coach the really big games! Who doesn't? And he does well. But, remember his team last year? Houston would beat the OU's and Louisville's of the world, but lose to the SMU's and Navy's of the world.

So, excuse me for being skeptical, but when I hear about a QB grinning ear to ear after losing a game and having 3 or 4 turnovers, well, I am sure Iowa State will be licking their chops just to play the Horns once again.

And guess who we have next. Iowa State.

Yes it has been one step forward and two steps back for a long time now.

Barely losing to USC does not mean anything. This is who we have been for a long time now. A talented (if unevenly talented), inconsistently coached team that flashes once in a while, but reverts to sloppy play every time.

If we don't take care of Iowa State next, it will be like deja ******* vu.

Something tells me you don't really hate being a Donnie Downer. In the meantime, it's hard to draw any real conclusions after just 3 games.

I don't feel like any of this is new information.

I see some of you longtime posters have disregarded this post, but it is relevant. Many of my Horn buddies also are saying the D is back, and O will be there next game. We go 10-2. BS. One off season with this staff will not make for a great year. No fault of the players, but look at how many new schemes they have had to adjust to in last 4 years! I will be ok with 7-5, and NOT being blown out, showing fight and improvement every game. Just my 2 cents.

I just need to know that this staff is going to have this team ready to play the ISU's and Kansas' of the world and not just play hard in the big games. It should have never came to this at Texas though, as to where we as fans have to be worried about this team getting up to play the likes of Iowa St. But, the last few years have proven that we do. So, hopefully the coaches will have the players ready.

I think its hard NOT to draw any conclusions after 3 games. We can see a pattern of weird unnecessary risky decisions early in games that go against the odds. We can see questionable offensive decisions: the lack of using Chris Warren to tote the rock; going for it very early in games on 4th down; not trying a field goal from medium range, etc.
We have seen also the appearance of defensive improvement. This gives me hope. A sterling defense like we saw against USC will keep us in every game we play.

OK Cary I really don't want to rain on your post, but that "Sterling Defensive" performance is exactly what took place against OU in 2015. Man, I can only hope and pray 2017 will be different!

What I saw different about the defense was the ability to disrupt USC offensive line who seemed like they were the ones getting worn down at the end. That made everyone play better or appear to play better. Even if USC turns out to be over-rated, they are still at least average, and UT did amazingly well IF you consider what the offense was handing them throughout the game. The D does seem to have improved.

The Offense though ... There is some potential, but 4 turnovers, no run game, and costly penalties will tend to keep you out of the endzone. IMHO That is why were were hanging on by the skin of our teeth and not dominating. Maybe start Shane and Chris if possible going forward.

In short ... I think we know what we have on Defense now ... Offense? Let's hope the coaches can do their jobs quickly and we avoid any more injuries to the O-line. Do that and we can get 7 wins I bet.
