Shane is a competitor who can start for every other Big XII team except ou; and every $EC team except Alabama; and every PAC-12 team except USC and Washington State. Sitting on the bench hoping Sam gets hurt doesn't seem to be the future he desires.

This thread is interesting in that some are comfortable with Sam running that many plays in a game and the way in which he runs to the D.

Last year the OC limited Shane in the run bc there was no good backup.

Shane makes Sam better and Shane will see more playing time this year.

I would prefer the RBs (all 3 or 4) to carry the ball more than the QB.

After OU every DC in the B12 will be looking for Sam to run and he will get hit a bunch.

You keep claiming this. Please cite some source that allows you to know this, when Sam claims it's not true.

I am shocked and uphauled that there is a growing debate amongst posters here as to whom the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns should be.

I predict it will be solved within another 10 posts, however.

I'm just glad we have two good QB's. And both are mobile to a degree. We can win with either. Have not been able to say that since _____? I don't know. I do agree Sam runs too much, maybe we could mix in some more option looks where he pitches to the running back. Also some more wildcat where other players are running not Sam. His luck is gonna run out eventually.

I trust my eyes, and what I saw on the sideline (yes, on TV) was pretty clear. His eyes were closed when the camera caught him, and when they were opened he had a stunned look on his face. While the team doctors may have told him to stay still, it's very unlikely that they also told him to keep his eyes closed.

Next, there's no way that a fully aware # 11 throws the ball out of bounds on 4th down. I don't care where he was on the field and what the yardage was. That's not Sam Ehlinger.

Regardless of the sophisticated monitoring devices that Texas has in their helmets (which, by the way, is terrific), and whether or not he could count backwards from 100 by 7s, he was dazed.

How his dazed state is defined, and whether or not his condition would qualify as a "concussion" is another issue. So it's difficult to question the decision to allow him to re enter the game because we are not privy to all of the information. But like I said, I saw what I saw, and we all observed that 4th down throwaway.

He was obviously unconscious as he lay motionless on the sideline before they sat him up.
If you are knocked unconscious, you have a concussion.

Clean, I agree with you, Ehlinger is the real deal. And look, I love Shane Buechele. Both are very capable division 1 starters in my book. But Sam has the magic. It was clear in LA, and again it was obvious in Dallas.

I really hope (and believe) Shane stays around and with a better O-Line and running game, he can be "very" effective. But Sam appears to have that unique quality of being able to take over, to dominate a game and make everyone around him much better.

Someone mentioned James Street. I like that anology. John Elway also comes to mind. Not the arm, but the confident/cocky will-to-win attitude.

He may have been motionless with his eyes closed but this is not "obviously unconscious"

Maybe he was doing vipassana meditation

I had an aggy come up at work and say; "was Sam really knocked unconscious and yet they let him go back in"?

I mean, come on, no doctor is going to let an 18-19 year old kid go back in the game after getting knocked unconscious. That's ridiculous. The doctor would be liable if the kid sustained a more serious brain injury after returning to the game.

not true. i've seen multiple occasions where the issue was not consciousness. it was immense pain and the reaction was to lay still with shoulders and knees.

He looked unconscious to me too.
However he was totally composed and laser focused during the post-game interview. He may have been coached on how to answer that question before hand, because you know TH knew it was coming. But it didn't seem that way to me. If he was concussed during that interview he is pretty damn good at hiding it.

I don’t have a strong opinion on whether or not Sam came back in, but whether he was unconscious isn’t the end all of the debate. If he had just taken a hit that caused such pain to some part of his body that his reaction was to lay fetal for awhile, simulating unconsciousness, then he likely wasn’t feeling as “immortal” when he went back in as usual.

I also note that Shane made very quick decisions on every play but the sack, and on that play, Sam was jumping up and down on the sidelines impatient to get in. Shane had to see that—any chance he looked for the longer strike on what would be likely his last play?

Thank you. Sometimes people come in here and assert a gut feeling as the absolute unvarnished truth and it can get really old.

I still believe he was out for a short period.
And I've heard QBs describe coming in after a hit like that and finishing the game and seem to be fine.
Then the next day they can't remember the 4th quarter.
Because he seemed fine at the presser doesn't say much.

    I hope I'm wrong and he's fine.
Just what it looked like to me.

I don't think he was unconscious. I just think he was groggy to a degree and tired which is why he stayed down for a few xtra. I bet he was treated with some smelling salts like they do boxers and so he immediately felt better. But my contention is this that a 100% Shane would have given us a better chance to win. As it turns out I was right. I know Shane would not have made the bone headed decision to throw the ball away on fourth down. But I'm not mad at Sam, he should have not been out there.

No, you don't KNOW that. You feel it, you believe it, but you have not the first foggiest clue what actually would have happened if Shane was still in the game.

What? What you know is that Sam didn't lead us to a score. What you don't know is if that's because of the injury. And what you don't know is that Shane definitely would have. So you don't know much from the situation.

ninth grade QBs would not have thrown that ball away.
When the game is on the line and you know you have to get a first down don't throw the ball out of bounds. Do you know why? Do you get it? At least throw the ball down the field maybe we will catch the ball or get an interference call.

Yes I know that Sam did not lead us to a score. I do believe that a 100% Shane is better than a 60 or 65% Sam, especially if we need to throw the ball which we did in that situation. I do believe he was hurt and groggy and tired at that moment. I didn't say that Shane would definitely lead us to a touchdown. I'm saying that Shane would have given us a better chance to win the game. I am saying since Sam had to come out of the game because of a possible concussion then Shane should have finished the game with only two or three minutes left. That was a coaching mistake. Shane had fresh legs and a fresh mind.

I’m trying to remember did Sam come back in when it was 4th down when he threw it out of bounds or was he in a play or two before that?

I like both QBs and no longer care which one is in the game. We are set at that position and are now able to redshirt the next two incoming qbs.
