We shouldn't have been throwing at all. We had 2 plays (3 if it were close enough to go for it on 4th) to get 5 yards and a 250 lb RB who plowed his way in for a TD from the 4 (with a little help from his friends) against KSU. That certainly seems a lot safer and a lot more likely to be successful that passing on the goal line, which has been a failure all year.
LJH in the Wildhorn with Warren and Moore blocking would have been a winning call. Or, better yet, how about a quick slant to Leonard off the RPO?
You set a pretty high and unfair standard for Shane. That he is never to take a sack. Even VY took an occasional sack which almost felt shocking I remember. Yes a sack is bad but that doesn't mean the sky has fallen. What if Shane throws for 3 tds and runs one in but is sacked 5 times. I will take that.
Perhaps that is because Herman has yet to get to the Mensa course that teaches 6'6" and 6'5" is taller than 6' and 5'10". Last time I checked there is no James Lott playing DB in D-1 football. I do, however, appreciate someone on the defensive staff putting Collin Johnson on defense for the Hail Mary pass.
I like that throw to Brewer when everybody goes to the right and he goes left and is wide open for a TD. I think we have run that only one time. why is that?
That is correct, do the same as we did against KSU. I was addressing this as the passing play was already called by our top notch OC Beck. A running play with Warren with help from Sam and other players had a high probability of winning the game.
I don't believe that. I am rewatching the game now it's at the end of the first half and we have had plenty of time to make throws. It's exaggeration that the QB is always running for his life way exaggeration.
Well looks like Shane will get his chance again as Sam is predictably concussed after Beck's ingenious game plan to use the QB as a battering ram as the entire offense. I hope we don't get both our QBs killed... between our porous OL and coach's inability to devise any sort of game plan aside from the one they know worked so well for them at tOSU where they DID have an OL and TEs etc it's not looking good. Seriously I hope Sam's career doesn't get cut short by having his brains scrambled. It would be a horrible waste, esp for this abortion of a season
I guess I just had to put my two cents worth into this conversation. And after Saturday's game, I think the original post was a fair question. Never been on either side of the fence on this one, but on Saturday, the game kind of reminded me of when Heard was a Freshman. I know no one was too pumped after the win at ISU, but now it actually looks pretty dang impressive after the way ISU is playing now and being a road game too. Maybe it is just karma biting the coaches is the *** by not sticking with the golden rule of not staying with the quarterback won the starting job in both the spring and fall. Did Shane really do anything to lose his starting job? Who knows? We were all excited about Sam's mobility. I am shocked OSU could hold this team to 10 points. Did the OSU defensive coaches have the perfect game plan, or was Sam still hazy from the hit he took in the OU game? Who knows? It just reminded me of when Heard started out like gangbusters until coaches got film on him and they went into ISU and got skunked. If Sam does stay the starting QB, then I guess coaches should find him some film of Dak Prescott and teach him two words. "BALL SECURITY"! Still excited about this team and looking forward to a much better season next year. The horns are what their record says they are, but to think of the possibilities if they could have pulled out at least a couple of them!!
totally agree, Heard shoulda been the QB when Shane got hurt, but that's water under the bridge ... 4 games ago
AH thanks ... I hadn't heard that. Heard was OOB from the defender's push. I thought Sam was throwing to Leonard in the back of the end zone. Guess I was wrong. Lotta chances before that play and he made a bad one that ended the game when the live action was "we're driving to win the game!" Then ... just like that ... we weren't.
Yes, TH mentioned Leonard in his presser. He and Heard were converging. But Sam only mentioned Heard in his remarks.
I am pretty sure that Herman said during the post game interview that this was the play (quick slant after five steps) send in and he was not sure why Sam dragged it out so long.
Looks like it may be Shane up next. Hope that ankle is healed up by now. http://www.hookemplus.com/2017/10/2...m-ehlinger-going-through-concussion-protocol/ C Zach Shackelford also in the same situation, going through the concussion protocol.
We basically had run it once per game to either Warren or Brewer, and it's worked every time. I don't think we ran it against OSU though.
You have to wonder though, what would their QBR's be if Sam had played against ISU and Shane had played against San "huh, what's this defense thing about" Jose St.
I'm pro both. But what I think I like about Sam is that he seems like an old school football player. He could have played in the 60s. He's tough and "John Wayne" ish. Lol
I think the OK State game showed that we just can't play a plow-ahead style with Sam taking 25+ hits. But the coaches seem reluctant to do anything else when he's in there. OK State has not lived up to their defensive hype in conference games except against us. Beck had some kind of hold-up on trying out new things to move the ball, and I think it comes down to Sam being quick to abandon his reads. If Sam can show a presence like Shane AND the coaches give them the same respect in terms of ball delivery and rhythm, Sam could probably be a better QB overall. But we might not even be able to test these theories until 2018.
