First off, I would like to give a shout out to utxhorns32, X Misn Tx, and Sangre Naranjada for their comments in the other thread regarding the contribution that the LHB makes to the game day experience. It's not just a bunch of musicians, the LHB is a spirit & service organization every bit as much as the Texas Cheerleaders, the Silver Spurs, the Texas Cowboys, and Alpha Phi Omega, etc.

For home games, their day starts 5 hours before kickoff with a rehearsal in the Bubble. This is open to the public, just try to stay out of the band's way.

Following the rehearsal and a pre-game meal (almost always barbecue), some of the percussion will head down to DKR to lead the Stadium Stampede (the arrival of the football team). This is usually 2 hours before kickoff

(Note: this video is from last year; now the Stadium Stampede begins at Robert Dedman Dr. and moves west to the North Entrance of DKR)

Roughly 80 minutes before kickoff, the Texas Drums will do a warm-up culminating with the traditional Cadence Run.

After that, the Trumpets and Trombones have their traditional pre-game rituals

40 minutes before kickoff: the LHB marches from the Butler School of Music to DKR

30 minutes before kickoff: LHB plays on the DKR steps near the WWI Memorial

15 minutes before kickoff: LHB enters DKR for the pregame show

There's a halftime show, of course.

The Showband of the Southwest, indeed!

The LHB essentially works throughout the game with stand tunes and musical riffs to keep the spirit level up.

Watching the LHB march out of DKR after the game is pretty impressive, too.

Job well done, kids! HOOK EM! (And get some rest! You've been at it for 10 hours now!)

Hook'em. The band has often been the best part of the home games for last several years. :bevo::hookem2:

    Nash,

Surely you don't enjoy the Longhorn Band more than the blonde bimbo, goofy acting midget, and cheesy games and commercials on the jumbotron?

My biggest regret from when I was a freshman at Texas (and I've got a lot of regrets!) is that I dropped band to go through rush.

Don Hart was conspicuously absent last night. Anyone know details?

I was a pretty decent trombone player.

I wish I'd tried-out for marching band ... but ... I chunked bags at the airport ... was in ROTC ... can't do it all.

I hear you. When I was a grad student at UT I would have loved to have been in the LHB. But the time commitment was absolutely out of the question. A few times I'd go sit in the stands in the stadium and watch them rehearse in the evening. That's as close as I got. As you said, one can't do it all (and studying & thesis work pretty much occupied what would have been my spare time). So I'm living vicariously through my daughter, who's in the percussion. She says she'll probably do it one more season (her junior year).
