Texas (2-0) will face a UTSA team that has lost their last two games, including a heartbreaker in OT Wednesday night to UT Arlington 69-68. USTA comes into Friday’s game at 1-2. Texas leads the all-times series over UTSA, 7-0. Horns won last season’s matchup 76-43.

Carlie Heineman (#31, 6-0 Sr. G), their second leading scorer through the first two games, did not play vs UT Arlington. She had also started in the first two games. No indication of why: injury, suspension, etc. Not sure if she will play versus Texas.

Crystal Chidomere (#4, 5-11 Sr.) is the leading scorer at 26.0 ppg although she has only played in the last game. Through three games, Marie Benson (#21, 6-1 Soph. F) is averaging 16.0 ppg. In two games, Heineman averaged 12.5 ppg. Those three are the only ones in double digits although these two are close: Tija Hawkins (#23, 6-1 Soph. F) at 9.7 ppg and Karrington Donald (#34, 5-7 Fr. G) at 8.7 ppg. Kourtney Kekec (#20, 5-10 Jr. F) has the top % from BTA at 75.0% on 3-4 shots. Donald (5-19) and Heineman (3-11) are the main shooters from BTA. Both Tasharian Robinson (#10, 5-10 Fr. G) and Deja Cousin (#13, 5-9 Soph. G) each has hit 2-7 from BTA. Benson (6-13, 46.2) and Chidomere (7-10, 70.0%) have the most FTs for the Roadrunners. Heineman (6-6), Cousin (1-1) and Robinson (1-1) are perfect from the FT line.

Benson is the top rebounder at 11 rpg. Secons is Hawkins with 6.3 rpg. Four others average between 4.0 and 4.7 rpg. Alexus Dukes (#3, 5-6 Jr. G) has the most assists at 12 even though she has only played in two of the three UTSA games and averages nine minutes per game. Donald has 10 assists and Hawkins six. Benson and Hawkins are 1-2 in blocks with 6 and 3 blocks, respectively. Kekec and Benson share the team lead in steals with five apiece. Heineman has four steals.

UTSA have 13 players on their roster. Eleven have seen action so far this season although seven have played in all three games. Starters in the third game are Robinson, Hawkins, Kekec, Chidomere and Benson. Chidomere’s 34.0 mpg and Heineman’s 32.5 mpg top the squad. Six players average between 20 and 29 mpg. Two others average between 10 and 13 mpg. A rotation of eight players were used in UTSA’s game versus Arizona. Have to wonder if the rotation will also be shortened in this game.

The Horns won’t face guard Loryn Goodwin tonight although they will face the 2016-17 C-USA Newcomer of the Year as well as a first team C-USA selection who has transferred to Oklahoma State and is eligible to play this season.

Horns are led by five players averaging double figures in scoring: Ariel (16.0 ppg), LaShann (13.5 ppg), Brooke (11.5 ppg) and Jordan and Audrey-Ann who each averages 10.5 ppg. Ariel is also the top 3pt shooter, having hit 4 of 4 from BTA. Brooke is 3-8. Alecia is 2-2. Jada 2-4. Audrey-Ann 1-2. And LaShann and Jordan are each 1-3. The FT% jumped up after game two. The top FT shooters are Brooke and Jada who have each hit both of their FTs. Others with FT%s over 70% are LaShann (6-7, 85.7%), Audrey-Ann (4-5, 80.0%) and Ariel (4-5, 80.0%).

Rellah is the top rebounder with an average of 6.0 rpg. Three others are averaging 5.5 rpg: Audrey-Ann, Ariel and Jatarie. Jordan adds 5.0 rpg. Brooke (13) and Ariel (8) are the assist leaders. Three are in third place with four assists each: Jada, Destiny and Chasity. Rellah has three blocks while both Ariel and Khalé have two blocks each. Ariel has a total of 8 steals. Brooke and Jada combine to match that total with four steals each.

Brooke (21 mpg) and Ariel (20.5 mpg) lead the team with every other player averaging at least ten mpg. All have seen action in the first two games.

Starting lineups based on prior game starting lineups.

Billie Marlow (#40, 6-3 Sr. C) is the tallest player that UTSA puts on the floor. The Roadrunners has four players at 6-1 and another at 6-0 as well. Horns will continue to have a height advantage inside in this game. The Roadrunners will be hard pressed to handle the inside play of the Horns. A big challenge for UTSA is handling the pressure they will face. Texas has thrived on TOs in the last two games.

UTSA averages 1.5 shots a minutes. Texas averages 2.0 shots a minute. It does not seem like much of a difference. But that does translate into an extra 20 shots a game. Another problem is going to be grabbing rebounds. Arizona had 11 more rebounds. UTSA had trouble keeping them off the boards. The ability of the Horns’ guards to rebound as well as the height of the Texas posts is going to make getting rebounds difficult for UTSA. The Roadrunners did play here last season so a crowd of several thousand should not fluster them.

Game time is at 7 PM this Friday (Nov. 17). The game will be televised on the LHN and FM 105.3.

Looks like Carlie Heineman may be back for the Texas game. Wonder who she would replace if she starts.

wow, great to see Jada break out like that! :yippee:
Almost had a double double with 19 pts. and 9 rebs. :hookem2:
Nice to see that 3pt shooting % go up over 40% with six different players hitting a three. Still need to work on that FT shooting, though. Only hit 67%.

The freshmen are improving quickly.....long way to go but encouraging. Underwood really has some skills........hope she continues once the competition stiffens. Sutton’s offense is really getting good........wish I could say the same for defense. Impressive show and if Aston can get them to not jack it up on first open look and reverse the ball every so often the offense could be scary good. Look forward to LSU game to see how it goes against increasingly difficult teams.

If she had played a few more minutes, Brooke could’ve gotten a double-double on points and rebounds no less. That would’ve been awesome.

Nutshell --The polish of Brooke and Ariel, Jada great game, we begin to see what Chasity can do, Rellah and Destiny some good things, defense in second half terrible, letting No. 4 get to basket repeatedly.

Did not realize this during the game - Chidomere finished with 19.

Chidomere scored 26 points in her season debut against Texas-Arlington on Wednesday after missing UTSA's first two games for personal reasons. She had only four points by early in the third quarter against Texas while guarded primarily by Higgs, a junior angling to become the team's defensive stopper. After Higgs left the game, Chidomere produced six quick points and kept scoring.

Brooke getting 6 defensive rebounds and total of 7 concerns me. Good for her........but where were our inside folks? Both Sutton and Brooke looked bad defensively against the guards in the second half.....especially fourth quarter. Can’t get Booke in foul trouble later.......she had 3 this game. Our point guard depth will be needed against some of the better teams with quick guards.

Happy to be 3-0 and having our entire roster available to play in each game; that hasn't happened in years past.

Always things we could have done better throughout each, but with so many different player combinations on the floor, the pro's outweigh the con's.

Obviously, not having Joyner around to grow and establish chemistry with this squad is the main negative. But, if we can get her back for conference play, and have everyone else remain healthy, life is good.

Speaking about the poor defense in the second half noted by several fans:

I think this was our highest scoring game. I think the previous was 109. I could be wrong.
