Charlie Strong the Red Herring

It appears the morally superior South Florida Bulls (9-2) will take on the morally inferior Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-6) in a bowl game.

South Florida quarterback Quinton Flowers apologized for making a lewd gesture during the team's loss to UCF on Friday, saying in a statement that he did not intend it to be offensive.

USF coach Charlie Strong gave no indication that he intended to punish Flowers when the Bulls (9-2) play in their bowl game.

"I know who this young man is, I know his character and I don't believe he intended to do anything that would offend anyone," Strong said in a statement.

    Discuss.

What was the lewd gesture Zucker? I did not see the game.

Lincoln Riley only suspended Special Snowflake one series for grabbing his family jewels and throwing fbombs on camera at Kansas

Don’t get me wrong, I lost respect for Charlie already when he let his current employer manipulate his salary to stick it to Texas

    I guess that wasn’t a core value

I tend to believe this board treats Charlie as a saint. His qb acted inappropriately and he backed him. Just using an example to show Charlie let’s things slide. Maybe if he was mayfields coach mayfield would behave better. Yes sarcasm.

Thats interesting. I don't keep track but I think Charlie, Mack, and Herman have both supporters and skeptics on this board.

I haven't noticed it being lopsided one way or the other though.

That may be true. I'm new to the board, guess I'm a little bit touchy on the subject. All of us have opinions. I consider I Don't Exist a special friend now, look forward to future discussions of red herrings or anything else he deems fit....

I have no idea what the frick you are talking about, but I've always considered Texas Tech morally inferior, so I guess I agree with you?

If you are referring to my post above, it's just a joke from the game threads last year when that seemed to be a recurring comment. All in fun.

Are you serious? The contract that Texas gave Charlie was just plain dumb. Any fool with a high school education should have seen that coming. The University of Texas with all of it's legal and business influences should be embarrassed with that exit clause. You fire a guy and give his new employer a financial incentive to hire him and then blame the guy that you fired because they took advantage of your gift.

This was all on the University of Texas.

I think we have all beat this red herring to death, folks. Its all water under the dam.
Regarding Charlie and his contract: if a gift-horse leads you to water, you better drink it, or so the saying goes. (and you can google that)

Not sure what you are saying. I think that you misread my post. I was quoting the earlier post.

I would never have given Charlie the Texas contract and if I was any school offering him a job, I would have taken advantage of Texas to the nth degree. Texas set it up and I would have used them for his new contract payments. In fact I might have given him year one and two at $1 and back-end loaded it at years 3-5 with the deferred payment from years 1&2. Not sure of the wording on the contract but based on what I have read, that might have been doable.

Those contracts (you have to include the assistants as well) are not on The University of Texas, but rather on Stevie Patterson and Billie Powers & his legacy. The school had never provided three year, full buyout contracts to assistants. The contracts border on gross negligence, but certainly provides proof of the amateur hour that was Powers & Patterson.

Of course, no one on The Forty Acres "followed the money", and there has been no forensic accounting, not that school employees are capable of that.

Those contracts are proof that Charlie got full support from the administration. People keep claiming that SP wasnt willing to spend money, yet there is clear and convincing evidence that UT spent plenty of money on Strong and his assistants. Just like Brown chose Diaz and Herman chose Beck, Strong chose Watson. There was no “support” issue.... other than maybe Strong was in over his head and did not know what to ask for from the admin.

So, I will admit that I had to look up red herring and here is dictionary.com's definition

something intended to divert attention from the real problem or matter at hand; a misleading clue.

If I am interpreting the OP's thread title correctly, he is implying that Charlie Strong is the red herring. Based on the definition, I don't see it.

The red herring, if there is one, in this matter would be the excuse for his player behaving in such a way that isn't his character. IDK I not edjumecated enough to know.

    77,

    In over his head? Yes

Not knowing what to ask for? He came from Loserville, where football was an afterthought. He went to Jurich, and got the response, "sure, now run along".

I posted then, and remain convinced that Strong hired the assistants he did because he couldn't get quality assistants to take the jobs, even with egregious terms. The coaching community knew that he wouldn't succeed in Austin. Only the legacy of Billie Powers didn't know.

He kept getting rejected on his OC hires and Sterlin Gilbert had to be begged and dragged out of Tulsa, so you are probably right.
