Texas (7-1), coming off a loss this past Sunday to the then #11/13 Tennessee, is now ranked #8/8 in both polls. Northwestern State (4-4) comes to the Frank Erwin Center coming off their own loss to Texas Southern. Northwestern Stare is 1-2 on the road while Texas is undefeated at home so far this season. Texas leads the overall series between the two teams 5-0. This will be the fifth year in a row that the Lady Demons have traveled to Austin. Northwestern State is Angela Ortega’s alma mater.

    NORTHWESTERN STATE
The Lady Demons are led in scoring by a couple of juniors:Cheyenne Brown, (#32, 6-2 Jr. P) at 15.3 ppg and Libba Gilliam (#22, 6-1 Jr. F) averaging 10.1 ppg. Nautica Grant (#0, 5-5 Jr. G) at 9.4 ppg and Jasmyn Johnson (#15, 5-8 Soph. F) with a 8.7 ppg average, provided additional scoring support. Gilliam (7-18, 38.9%), Grant (9-26, 34.6%) and Johnson (11-34, 32.4%) are the main threats of six Lady Demons that average over 2 treys a game each. Leah Barnes (#20, 6-1 Jr. F) and Gabby Bell (#1, 5-4 Soph. G) get to the FT line the most, 23 and 18 times, respectively, although they are both hitting just over 50% from the FT line. Brown, Gilliam and Jocelyn Scott (#23, 5-11 Soph. F) are the ones that make the most from their FTs, all hitting 78.6% or better.

No Lady Demon averages more that 4.7 rpg (Brown) but three average 4.4 rpg ( Johnson, Barnes & Bell) and two others (Gilliam & Scott) average 4.3 rpg. Bell averages 4.1 apg with Johnson (2.5 apg) and Grant (2.4 apg) helping to distribute the ball. Like Texas, Northwestern State has not been a big shot blocking team to date. They average two blocks a game with Giliam, Johnson and Barnes topping the team with three blocks each. Bell (2.3 spg), Johnson (1.8 spg) and Jha'ne Wheeler (#10, 5-7 Fr. G) with 1.5 spg have been the top ball hawks for the Lady Demons.

Of 13 active players, nine have at least one start. Barnes and Bell are the only ones that have started all eight games. Johnson has seven starts in seven games played. Leading scorer Brown has only played in three games and started three. Four starters in the last game, Bell, Brown, Grant and Johnson, average between 31 (Bell) and 26 mpg (Brown & Johnson). Gillliam and Scott also average over 20 mpg.

    TEXAS
Horns are led by four starters with double digit scoring: Ariel (14.4 ppg), Brooke (12.8 ppg), LaShann (12.3 ppg) and Jatarie (11.4 ppg). Four players continue to hit over 40% of their treys: Brooke (15-37, 40.5%), Ariel (13-24, 54.2%), Alecia (9-20, 45.0%) and Audrey-Ann (4-9, 44.4%). Texas’ overall FT shooting continues to improve; they are hitting 67.8% now. Brooke is hitting 92.9% but has only gotten to the FT line 14 times (made 13). LaShann is 23-30 (76.7%) while Ariel is at 85.7% (18-21).

Rellah continues to have the best rebounding average at 5.8 rpg. Audrey-Ann is next at 5.6 rpg while Jatarie adds 5.5 rpg. Ariel (4.9 rpg) and Brooke (3.9 rpg) are the top rebounding guards. Brooke (4.6 apg) and Ariel (3.8 apg) are the top two in setting up their teammates. Alecia is third at 2.8 apg. Ariel is the top shotblocker at one block per game while Audrey-Ann is second at 0.6 bpg. Three Horns reached double digits in steals (Ariel, 2.6 spg), Brooke (2.3 spg) and Audrey-Ann (1.4 spg).

Ariel, Brooke, LaShann and Audrey-Ann have started all eight games for the Horns. Jatarie has seven starts while Jordan has one. Four players have played in all eight games. Jada has played in seven, missing one game due to illness. Khaléann has missed the last three games due to an ankle injury. Among the frosh, while all three average double digits when they get in a game, Destiny has played in seven games, Chasity in six and Rellah in five. I would expect all three freshmen to play against Northwestern.

Projected starting lineups are based on the last game played.

Grant and Brown are just settling in after missing the start of the season. In particular, this will only be Brown’s fourth game back. Still, the preseason all conference second teamer will be hard pressed to overcome the height and athleticism of the Texas’ posts.

I expect the frosh to get a lot of minutes in this game while the starters rest up for Florida State on Sunday.

The Horns will be looking to exorcise a few of their own demons after the Tenn. game. The last four games, Texas has won by an average of 84.5 to 47.8. The last two have been 86.0 to 36.0. No reason to expect this game to be any different. The only surprise has been that Texas has not reached triple digits since the first game of the series. There’s a good chance Texas will do so in this game.

Well, dang. Texassports.com has no preview for this game but the one for Florida State is already up.

Game time is at 7 PM CST with the LHN carrying the game. Radio station 105.3 FM will do the radio broadcast.

Don’t forget that there will be a change to get autographs from the players after the game.

I understand the coachspeak, but if the team doesn't dominate on the boards and the scoreboard while getting the frosh at least 15 minutes each, it will be disappointing.

Both Ole Miss (77-45) and Oklahoma State (78-44) took the Lady Demons down. Although, to be fair, the OSU game was the first one back for Grant and Brown missed both of those games.

I'll be at the game cheering tonight. But I admit I wish we could get on with FSU already. I hope the team has a better attitude than I do and uses the game to work on some things. Now I am going to be a bit of a contrarian. I am less interested in seeing the freshmen get a lot of playing time than I am in seeing a core group of 7 to 9 (max) play as a cohesive unit. I'd like to see Hosey continue to play more. Her athletic ability inside is sorely needed. I also love the energy she brings. I think Jada can bring a lot to the floor. Besides shooting well, Jada plays strong around the basket.

What does everyone think of the schedule this season? We either play someone good few games or teams that are picked at bottom of conference like tonight? I guess i just don’t see how it helps because Coach has shown she isn’t going to freshman in a game that matters.

Last year people were complaining about the schedule being too hard. Now some are complaining about this years schedule.

Chasity seems to have the quickness and foot/hand speed to be a + defender but, like Lashann until she matured a bit, can freewheel on D a bit too much. She’s going to be a real nuisance to opposing ball handlers as she develops.

The freshmen got plenty of minutes tonight. Coach Aston said she thought the freshmen showed some improvement in things such as defense and shot selection, and talked about preparing the freshmen to play more as the season progresses. From those remarks, I would expect to see one or more of the freshmen begin to get some minutes during conference games.
