Rangers are not going to offer Cashner.

Cannot wait to hear the "pitching plan".

Report today says they will make a run for Arietta. Would be solid number two behind Hamels but expensive (though cheaper than Darvish).

That would be a good start. Also they picked-up Perez's option. They want Cashner but do not want to pay him.

GM meetings this week in Orlando. JD will have to show his cards.

Rangers inked Fister to one year 3.5M deal. Junior on the Ticket will not be able to handle this one next year.

Didn't see anything concrete from the meetings. Hope JD is doing some serious work behind closed doors. Fister is a nice sign for a back-of-the-rotation innings eater at a reasonable price, but there are bigger needs - like a top-of-the-rotation guy. Arietta would be a great get if JD can pull it off.

Agree on Fister as a good 5 so 1 and 5 are covered, but still a way to go.

Perez will make a good number 3 in rotation which leaves the hope that the Rangers can sign Cashner for the four spot and Arietta at the two. Not enough to challenge Houston but that rotation could challenge for wild card.

FW, I wish I had any confidence that the Rangers have any chance in the Arietta Sweepstakes. I don't see luring any "name" pitcher until the new stadium is built (but hopefully I am wrong).

I'm frankly a bit surprised that we haven't seen more movement so far this off-season. My hope is that JD has some potential deals brewing just under the radar. Ohtani (sp?) may be absorbing most of their attention at the moment - but even if they sign him, they still have other needs to address.

Any Ranger zealots on the board got any insight?

Ohtani pursuit is probably sucking all of the air out of the room right now HHD. The Rangers have the most bonus money to pay and seemingly have made his first cut. I would think they are frozen in place waiting to see how that plays out.

Viper, I sure hope that's not the case. JD has a number of assistants who can be doing the groundwork on other free agents while he is embroiled in the chase for Ohtani - there are a lot of needs to be addressed, and the research and preliminary contacts need to be made now so the deals can be closed in a timely manner.

Looks like at least 6 people from the Rangers met with Ohtani yesterday in LA. Due to the international player rules, this will be wrapped up on or before 22 December.

Also the Rangers signed subject to a physical Mike Minor (KC) yesterday. Another RP that the Rangers believe can start.

Some insight from today's Ft. Worth Star-Telegram (start with "Should) at the bottom of the left most column):

If Minor is really slotted as a starter (and they are thinking Bush as well) then the Rangers have given up on trying to re-sign Cashner. Viper I think you are right that getting Arietta is a longshot and it sure seems like the Rangers are more in on Ohtani then Arietta but Daniels has surprised us before. I have also heard that they are shopping Choo and are wiling to eat 50-60% of his salary to move him.

FW I have also heard about shopping Choo, but even with the Rangers eating over half of the salary I don't see much of a demand for him. Also (and I am sure the Rangers know this) by opening the biding at eating 50-60% the Rangers basically have indicated that they are willing to eat even more. I am sure they are after very young talent in a trade as much as dumping salary, but at some point they will have to consider just releasing him.

Looks like the Ohtani pursuit has crashed and burned, so time to put a tem together JD.

With Ohtani officially no longer an option the Rangers either go hard after Arietta or, and there are more and more rumors about this, go get Darvish back.

^Right on, FWHORN. JD and his crew gave it their best shot on Ohtani, but the Angels won. Move on - there are some decent pitchers available in Free Agency. Times a'wastin - pitchers and catchers report in 68 days.

So my wife is running a half marathon at Disney World in February and the next day just happens to be the first home spring training game of 2018 for the Braves at their facility which just happen to be at Wide World of Sports at Disney World. Now all I have to do is find a plausible excuse to disappear for a few hours while everyone else is doing one of the parks that Monday. Its not the Rangers but it is baseball and its just a little over two months away.:yippee::bounce1::bounce2::yippee:

Radio today is talking about a Greinke for Choo swap with each team assuming the salary of player they get. That would add about 76 million in salary to Rangers but they would get a top flight starter. My gut reaction is if they can do it, do it, but we will see.

They may need to throw something else in. I would throw Profar in since he basically has no value at this point in his career. Greinke is under contract for 4 more years at or over $30 million per year, but moving Choo and Profar would mean opening the line-up for younger cheaper guys.

Also interesting is not the Rangers continuing talk with Yu's agent, but the Astros admitting Yu was tipping his pitches during the Series. They feel that can be corrected and plan to make a run at Yu.

Rangers add Chris Martin to Bullpen. That barely moves the needle.

Looks like the Greinke deal is cooling due to inability to match salaries and cash, so that leaves two real pitching help candidates - Darvish and Arrieta. Arrieta is expensive and Darvish is expensive in his mind.

Well.....Rangers get Matt Moore in a trade with Giants for unnamed prospects. This makes them lefty heavy.......Hamels, Perez, Moore, Minor. The righty is Fitzer. I’ll bet they still sign another starter that is a righty and move Minor to pen where he was good last year with the Royals.

Matt Moore acquisition has same barely moves the needle feel to it as Chris Martin, he is coming off a 6-15 season with a 5.52 ERA, he is better than that but how much is a real question. Rangers now have Hamels, Perez, Fister and Moore penciled in as starters as we wait on Darvish/Arrieta decisions.

^FWHORN, you're correct - there is still a need for a bigger move for the rotation. Darvish and Arietta are big, but also big dollars. Also want to see if anything comes from talks with the Diamondbacks about Greinke. Another rightie is essential - getting too left-handed already.

Perez out until May with elbow injury caused in a manner reminiscent of Derek Holland's greatest hit, except unlike Derek it wasn't a dog that injured Perez's elbow, instead it was apparently a Bull that caused this one, no kidding ...... a Bull.:rolleyes1:
