I shall never concede that the Johnson twins were recruited by Charlie Strong, nor shall I ever give him credit for their signing. That all lays at the feet of an old LaGrange Leopard named Johnny Johnson.

Hey Zucker, you're a better man than me!
I find its really easy for me to get entrenched on a message board forum, but not so easy to back off. You just showed how to do it, though! Sincerely, I appreciate it.

Looks like Warren is now throwing some shade on Herman on his way out. It's in the Dallas Morning News.

    Thanks.

There used to be a reputable media in this country, and they looked down on the likes of The National Enquirer. Now, television, radio, fishwrap, internet all are an embarrassment to the "ethics" of The Enquirer. Be the news, make the news, for never let facts keep you away from sensationalism.

No there there. Anytime there is a staff change things are going to change. If the old system worked the coach would not have been dismissed. The last quote sums it up.

He said something to the effect of not being put in a position where "I" would want to shine.

Sounds like he wasn't happy with the position change and quit. That's his right, but most believe the change would have been better for him and the team.

I thought TE was a great move. He could block and clearly had good hands. I was surprised he seemed to resist it so much. Besides, running backs don't last long in the league and his style seems to invite contact.

It's a tough spot. He did pretty well 2 years ago. We thought we were in a good place with our running game going in to last season. Our running game stank. I don't know for sure that we can say Chris wouldn't have gotten 1300 yards had everything stayed the same. We'll
    never know.
He's always been a running back. His dad was a running back. He had done pretty well the year before as a running back.

I don't fault our coaches that Chris left, but I don't fault him for wanting to believe the dream of being a running back. He believes in himself. I like that quality in a person.

When at TE he really shined. He could block, catch, and run with the ball after the catch. It seemed like his natural position to me.

I continue to be mystified why he would never run with any "lean" whatsoever. He always seemed to hit the line in a bolt upright position. Instead of being a linebacker's or safety's worst nightmare, he was as easy knock over as a bowling pin.

I think a large part of the problem was he never made it to the line.
He was being hit by or dodging a defensive player in the backfield.
And still, in his small amount of playing time he averaged almost three yards per carry. I will always wonder how it would have gone if he were used enough to wear down some defenders.
    Our run game was baffling.

H/TE is his natural position and where he will end up in the pros. He and his family know that.

Totally agree about "dodging a defensive player in the backfield". Only once did he not dodge a defensive player he should have blocked.

As far as getting more carries, he never ran tough and got the hard yards after contact. People bitched about Porter getting the carries because he is smaller, but he could read the defense, he did block, he did not go backwards the first time someone breathed on him.

Sabre I honestly think we watched a different player we thought was Warren. But I'm not going to argue the point.

Well I will when it comes to comparing Warren to Porter. Porter is the one that went down when breathed on. Warren always carried a pile 2-3 yds. After all Porter averaged 3 YPC for the season, Warren averaged 4.4 despite getting a number of goal line carries that brought his average down. I'm not sure Porter broke more than 2 tackles all season in almost 300 carries. Porter may have been a better blocker, but to argue he was better than Warren carrying the ball would be like arguing aggie has an overachieving FB program. There's no numbers anywhere to back it up.

    Run,

Until we get another Earl or Ricky or even a healthy Edwin Simmons or Butch Hadnot, our RBs have multiple responsibilities.

Warren is bigger and stronger than Porter, but Porter is faster. I had hoped Warren would be the power back we needed behind a less talented OL. He wasn't.

A RB has to be able to read and recognize the defense. Porter did, Warren either could not or would not. He constantly (with one exception) ran by blitzing defenders rather than pick them up. Porter at least stuck his nose in their chest to give the QB another second or two. Neither was the answer to what we needed, but a RB with the ability to read and block is a necessity.

As far as 4.4 versus 3.?, when were those yards earned? Scrub time? Mop up? Against San Jose? I don't know and don't care enough to analyze it. I know I saw every game this year, and our strength should have been our WRs, but when a RB whiffs on every block or refuses to block, the QB has no chance to make stars out of those WRs.

I wish Warren well in his endeavors, the same as I do with Porter, but I welcome Ingram after having seen him play several times. Of course, I felt the same about the big kid from Madisonville, Hadnot, Simmons, Pat Sheehan, among others.

For any Aggie lurkers reading this, I invite you as I invited your fathers to prove I took Hadnot's SAT. If I had, the score would not have been that high.

Except that Warren averaged 2.69 ypc if you take away the meaningless SJSU game. If you're complaining that Porter couldn't get the job done despite him being a better blocker, I'd say that no one showed much of anything, including Warren. People were way too quick to anoint him the second coming after his Tech game 2 years ago (I think Tech was like #124 in the nation in run defense) but he couldn't back much else up.

I'm not a huge fan of the coaches giving Porter ample time and carries either... I think they're trying to have him regain that confidence he showed as a junior in Katy before his injury. We'll see a lot of Young and Ingram (and maybe Carter assuming he's not doghouse bound) try to pick up the slack that Porter was dangling last year.

Porter also has his average increased by a few long runs against bad defenses and averaged 1.6 ypc against fing Kansas. I'm not going to argue Warren's blocking, but as a runner there's still no comparison. Do you think Porter would have run over the Tech defense like Warren did? At least Warren went forward for 2-3 yards constantly being hit in the backfield. Porter always went backwards while being hit by anything bigger than a 170 lb CB.

None of them were the answer. Maybe Carter or Young can be with a decent OL, but in all my over 45 years of watching Texas FB I simply can't remember a back worse at breaking tackles than Porter.

Kyle Porter is 5'10" 215 lbs. Warren is 6'3" 250 lbs. It's sad that they basically run with the same results. I'm saying Warren runs like he's the same size as Porter, which is sad......."no lean, can't break tackles"....wonder who will be standing on a sideline with a team jersey on in 2018.....

I think this is what is sad:

    25 CAR, 276 YDS, 11.0 AVG 4 TD
    2 REC 12 YDS 6.0 AVG

    0 CAR 0 YDS 0.0 AVG 0 TD
    1 REC 19 YDS 19.0 AVG

If you think Tech's run defense got this much better from 2015 to 2017 then Okay...:idk:
If you think Warren regressed this much from his FR year to his JR year all I can say is we'll never know because he did not get a single carry.

However, this guy got some carries! Lets see if you can guess which special back took these carries:
    4 CAR 9 YDS 2.3 AVG 0 TD

Some of this has to be on the coaching staff. They CLEARLY did not have a clue about how to get the most out of their talent on offense, and that is not just a Chris Warren thing.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

Porter is not an every down RB and I don't think he ever will be. Perhaps he could have been utilized more effectively in other positions - flanker, slot, receiver out of the backfield, etc. ... get him in space. However, his being tackled easily and not getting YAC would be the same in those positions just like him carrying the ball out of the backfield.

Like many of you, I suspect the coaches had him in as the RB to read the D and block properly more than anything else.

Agree. He is more of a Fozzy type than a Ricky type.

Yes, both were situational backs. Porter is no where near as shifty or explosive as Fozzy was tho.
I think Porter is more of a Brett Robin type of back.
If line made a hole, Porter made it to the next level and got tackled.
If the OL did not make a hole, Porter made it as far as they did. If the line got -1 yd of push, Porter got negative 1 yard. If the line got 2 yards of push, porter got 2 yards, etc. No more no less.
Brett Robin could have done that, and was probably also a very dependable blocker with decent hands which is why he was only ever in the game on 3rd and long on obvious passing downs. Even GDGD knew better than to give him carries on running downs.
