Joe, was the Stallion there in the 80s? I don’t recall it but there are a number of things I don’t recall about those days.

It was for awhile. First time I went was in the fall of ‘74. I can’t remember the date exactly, late 80’s I think, but after an afternoon football game a group of us UTexes went to the Stallion and all that was left was the foundation. Some older guy saw us and said it had burned down, and wasn’t going to be rebuilt. Down the way was Taco Flats, a great place for beer (Friday afternoons was 50cent pitchers the big pitchers) terrible food...we always warned newbies not to eat only drink or run the risk of getting the squirts.

Whereabouts on N Lamar? I got here in 1983 and, to my recollection, the Stallion was already gone by then.

"I hate being one of those old guys who sits around and talks about how good things used to be, "

Me too, but I sure do it a lot and enjoy reading these stories told by others. Nice post. My old food stories are typically from El Paso, like La Paloma, great hamburger steak the "La Paloma Special" you'd taste it for a week but was sure good when you ate it. Their fresh made tortillas are (were) still the best, and biggest, I've ever eaten anywhere.

I graduated in 1981 and I remember eating at The Stallion. Not gourmet, but certainly a great value as the prices for beer and chicken fried steak were amazingly low. The atmosphere was rustic and authentic.

I went there a few times in the 70's. Not the best of food, but a lot of it and cheap. Perfect for students.

A friend of mine sent me an article that reports The Stallion closed in 1984.

Not to get too far off the thread topic, but since it is about food around campus - anybody know what happened to Night Hawk Steak House on the drag? Posted in the past that we ate there many times after games in the mid-late 60's / early 70's and then it disappeared...

The Stallion was across the street from the drive-in theatre, I think called the Chief.

On or near the drag was The Night Hawk, Dirty’s and the GM Steak House #5. Except for Dirty’s (last time I drove by) the others are long gone.

I was at UT from 1969 thru 1975, but don't remember the Stallion.

I had my first Big Mac in the sixties in Austin. I thought that was the best burger I'd ever tasted (probably because I was used to eating 19 cent Griff's burgers). San Antonio didn't have any MacDonalds at that point.

That location is now home to the Graduate School of Business.
