Reported elsewhere "Stroke Saturday afternoon. Had surgery and is still in a very concerning delayed recovery."
You know, I predicted this when he left UT. He did not seem to have anything else in his life except for baseball that meant nearly as much to him. I thought it might not be long.
Thanks for the memories coach! I wish he could have finished his days coaching the Horns. It frustrates me how we treated Augie, Mack, and Cliff. They deserved better in my opinion.
In about an hour will be the celebration of his life at the Erwin Center. It is meaningful to try to remember him by expressing what he meant to me as a college baseball fan who watched many of his teams' games at the Disch & a few at Omaha. The best adjective to describe his tenure at UT is "WOW" !! It is hard to fully realize what he did with the total number of games that he won over his lifetime, However, in 20 years in Austin, he coached his teams to 2 national championships and two other CWS runner-up rankings. Wearing the Longhorn uniform, he went to a the College World Series in 8 of those years and reached a regional tournament in a total of 15 of those years. I still have a memory of him standing in the dugout in his CSF uniform and thinking that it might be neat watching him be the coach at UT someday ---- and, in particular, in those games where he beat the Horns. In the 21 years that he coached at Cal State, he won 3 national championships and went to the College World Series a total of 7 times. He took his CSF teams to a regional tournament in 17 of those years. As a birthday present one time, I was given a signed 8x11 picture of him in a UT uniform and pointing forward. It was signed by him with the "Hook-em" inscription. I just recently took it down from the wall in my study. ------ Augie, thanks for all the memories. RIP AUGIE GARRIDO : “This isn’t about some ... damn game, this is about our lives!”
