"Texas senior LB Edwin Freeman had successful surgery on Wednesday to repair a triceps injury and will miss the remainder of spring practices.

Additionally, senior DB P.J. Locke III sustained a stinger during Saturday’s practice, will continue to be treated and evaluated and is considered day to day."

SI asks "What keeps Texas from winning?"

    https://www.si.com/college-football...m&utm_medium=social&xid=socialflow_twitter_si

" ... The University of Texas is a behemoth of an organization that is routinely the focus of the legislators who work in the state capitol a mile away, and its athletic department suffers from much of the same paralysis by bureaucracy. Steve Patterson, the second of those four athletic directors, attempted to cut through that bureaucracy and take decisive action, but he acted like a slash-and-burn turnaround specialist instead of the steward of an iconic brand that has plenty of money but needs to be pointed in the proper direction. “A lot of it when you're this big is that you become silo-driven not because you want to but because of the size,” Del Conte said. “It’s like the federal government.”

The stagnation also may have some of its roots in arrogance. Texas won so much in the first decade of this century that the people in charge stopped evolving because they didn’t think it would ever end. The Joneses, as Dodds once famously called the Longhorns, stopped keeping up with everyone else in just about every category except ticket prices. Del Conte intends to change that, and one of his first priorities is the Moncrief-Neuhaus Athletic Center, which houses the football team. The Longhorns got a new locker room last year, but the rest of the building is showing its age compared to the palaces in Norman, College Station and Manhattan. (That’s Manhattan, Kans., by the way.) Strong wanted them improved but couldn’t make much progress. By the time Herman arrived last year, it had begun to dawn on Texas officials that they had fallen behind. The locker room was a start, but Del Conte wants to ensure facilities don’t cost the Longhorns when they’re trying to recruit against Texas A&M or Oklahoma or Alabama.

“Our facilities used to be the greatest facilities in the ’90s and early 2000s,” Del Conte said. “If you go down Rodeo Drive or you go around Beverly Hills, it’s that one house. Everyone said, ‘That was my dream house.’ Then everyone built around it. And that used to be some kind of house. We’ve got to fix our facilities....”

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

I suspect Locke will have a HUGE season and so will the D.... Orlando will have a very mobile, agile and extremely hostile DEFENSE that will win games.

I’m no insider so I don’t know what’s really going on, if anything at all, but on the surface at least it looks like we got the right guy for the job. Seems like we haven’t had one for a bit.

Danny Davis quote from above: "Texas DL Breckyn Hager said he hasn’t cut his hair since he arrived at Texas in 2015. Said he’ll let Sam Ehlinger cut it on the podium if the Longhorns win the Big 12. “We’ve all got goals,” said the senior. #HookEm"
And if we don't win the Big 12?

Comment on the QB play at practice from Will Blazer

Shane Buechele and Sam Ehlinger were splitting reps with the 1s. Same old story. Sam runs the offense better, but has a tendency to miss his targets. He’s still too erratic with his passes to make the plays I know he wants to. Shane is deadly accurate on most throws, but he doesn’t run the offense with quite the same effectiveness.

I’ll be interested in seeing the freshmen QBs during the Spring Game because while they look good in practice against nobody, I don’t think they’ll shine quite as bright when bullet fly. Casey Thompson has some ability to escape a pocket though.

This doesn't quite add up. How can one who cannot make the throws run the offense better than the one who can make the throws. Maybe we are going back to the wishbone...

That's what I keep wondering. Why can't Shane be taught how to run the offense? That's a learned skill. Whereas, throwing accuracy is kinda like speed. Yes, you can teach it a little bit, but 80% of it you either have it or you don't. I'm just not sure Sam ever will.

    Like Herman said.
It seems to be the difference of participating in the offense and running the offense.
I think Shane knows the offense.
They just want him to be more of the field General.

I wonder about his passing game but I bet he can move the chains on his feet.

This staff doesn't want Shane to be their starter, IMHO. For his sake he should have transferred at the end of the season to a school that would welcome and utilize his talents.

He could still have a change of heart, though, if the right person said the right thing to him....

I think this is it. I don't doubt Shane's ability to learn the offense. He is a smart kid. Not learning the offense = isn't prone to putting his shoulder down and running over safeties. Which is dumb.

This discussion topic has gone around and around for months and keeps going nowhere...
I'm surprised that so many posters here think you can separate these two things...or that it is the coaching staff's fault that Shane hasn't been able to put the two together.
Its been painfully obvious Shane doesn't command the team, the pocket, the vibe etc and the offense looks flat, energy -wise, when he's in there. I am sure the coaching staff has made clear what they'd like to see from him..I know they have.
Yet he still hasn't put it together. The evidence so far suggests he cannot.
If a staff is seeking a more dynamic, dangerous offense...it is easy to see why they currently view the QB situation the way they apparently do.
They'd rather lose by two points to a team on a bad decision late in the game then not even be in it at all.
For the record, I'd be fine with either guy.
Sam needs to improve passing and decision making and Shane needs to bring more assertiveness/energy to the field.
Too bad...put them both together you'd have the perfect QB.
Anyone we know in the Biomed/Health Sciences department who could work on this?

    4th_floor Dude, where's my laptop?

I think our lack of an offensive line is the root cause for Shane's problems with the offense. If Shane has time to pass, he can be deadly accurate. But he's had very poor protection for both years here. If the line shows progress and we get a running game, Shane will look a lot better out there.

The OL was not much better in 2016 and Shane looked the part.
Not disagreeing the OL is an issue but the play-calling was no help last year either. Tim Beck's play calling highlighted deficiencies instead of hiding them.
Using Sam like a battering ram last year was sort of a band-aid.
If I was the HC I think I'd do somethign about that play calling, and try to get the guy who I know can make the throws some run.

Maybe he's more accurate but is still hesitant to make throws, not finding guys who are open, not executing the zone read as well...
