Hemphill Mapps - Why

This is my fundamental issue with Herman which I have expressed on many occasions. If he wins, and wins big, I suppose I won’t care as much. But the smugness, the attitude, really turns me off.

“Dude, you’re the head coach of one of the best programs in the country, a job coveted by almost everyone. You’re making a fortune. You’re living in Austin, Texas. Would it kill you to show some humility or, in your mind, does that project weakness?”

Truth be told, humility projects strength. That’s why it’s so rare.

So, any clues out there which program Hemphill-Mapps will transfer to?

I have no ideaan where he is going, but his HS is moving to Syr-excuse, and Urban Myth has taken a number of kids out of Manvel. Closest school to home is Third Ward.

Maybe if I saw him speaking then it would seem different but with only the words "Next man up" it just seems like a challenge to his team that nobody better cry over losing players.

You may be correct, but have you considered that maybe TH really does care about Hemphill Mapps and really hates to see someone waste their talent and not reach his full potential?

I can see this as a possibility (especially with TH's competitiveness), but I can also see what you are getting at and have noted it at times in the past.

I really think this is going to turn out to be a lose-lose situation in the long run, where neither party comes out better off on this one...usually you can see one party being better off, but do not know about this one.

In the final analysis, I also appreciate his contributions and wish him all the best...but Hemphill-Mapps has to be hurting his potential due to lack of focus and distracting his mental approach.

    Just my thoughts,

I haven’t seen the pc in which he said that but reading it, it doesn’t seem all that bad. But Tom Herman has a way of being ***-holey so it would not surprise me if it sounds worse than it reads coming out of his mouth.

Sometimes it looks like Tom Herman is trying too hard emulate Saban.

Agreed. it just makes him seem small.

He’s our coach though. I can tolerate him bring a precocious little prick but that better be the worst of it. He better never get my University in any kind of serious trouble in his pursuit of trying to be badass.

"Disappointing. We wish Reggie the best and hope he finds what he's looking for out there, but next man up."
    Tom Herman

I fail to understand why people have a problem with this. He played the kid a lot, wanted him to remain on his team and now the kid insists on leaving; and for what reason? Don't know, but it appears to be all about him? So Tom stated his disappointment, wished him well and told his team that he expects them to backfill the position.

A coach can only do so much and then give it up. If Tom was crying in his beer, ringing his hands and asking for sympathy people would be saying that he is soft. I get the feeling that Tom is a throwback to the kicka-- coaches of old and that is what I like in a coach. He has a bit of an attitude, and guess what, so did the guy up in Norman who won all of those Big XII titles, and many other successful coaches like him. They don't worry about making friends, they focus on winning. If you have a choice between people liking you and respecting you, take the respect every time. And I know what the coaches I played for would have said to me. See ya later quitter, and don't let the the door hit you in the ***. Next man up!

Well said, Chin. I was listening to the presser when TH made the statement. I didn't have a problem with it then and still don't. If you don't want to play for THE University, then don't let the door hit ya' where the good Lord split ya'. I can envision stoops, Saban and Dabo saying the same thing. I had more than one boss who would have happily told me that had I voiced displeasure with their management style. It's life, get used to it.

And somehow going to Athens is an upgrade over ATX. He was Sam's favorite receiver. What the hell is wrong with him? That decision makes no sense. None at all. He plays 2 more years and he's got a legit shot at the pros. Now he's in Athens, TX. What a waste.

TVCC. Must be grade issues since he didn’t go to a 4 year college. I thought he played well and I wish him good luck in the future.

Perhaps a lot of us were hasty in speculation on this. Maybe it was grades all along and not his preference to leave. A. It makes more sense if so and B. If that is the case and the university kept it that quiet for his sake then one more reason to respect Herman and the program

We may never know why, but I hope we do. This is the strangest departure I can remember. In fact, I can’t think of a close second. RHM was very well liked, praised by Herman, and on the fast track to stardom. It just doesn’t add up.

Going to Henderson County Junior College gives him multiple options while getting his grades in line, not the least of which is the possible return to The Forty Acres. Other options could be Herman's friend in the Third Ward, Sonny in Highland Park, Strong at direction Florida where grades don't matter, or the SEC West, where no school is Tier 1 academically.

Do D-II and D-III schools offer scholarships now? If not, then community college is cheaper and he potentially gets to play right away, which would not have happened with a D-1 transfer (as I understand the rules).

36 equivalent scholarships in DII; none in DIII.

DIII Players get something. A kid I know signed an LOI to play fab at Texas Lutheran a couple of years ago and got a “scholarship” of some sort. I’ll have to ask the next time I see his folks.

It will be some type of academic scholarship or grant as athletic scholarships are verboten in DIII. Kind of stupid, but that is how the NCAA rolls.

Usually academic. I know two athletes at TLU and both got academic scholarships, but then again almost everyone accepted at medium to small private schools get something. I have no idea how much those two got.

A couple of guys I know who went to UT-Dallas and played baseball both received some type of law enforcement grant since they were in the Criminal Justice degree program.

All of D-II and D-III cheat to get around the rule. Try to find a football player at Harvard, Yale, Penn, Princeton, or Dartmouth paying tuition.

Quite a consistent and airtight system the NCAA has set up there!
But why would we expect anything else?

First thing I thought of too. Specially as I sit here watching the wind whip the trees around like so much string with the temp steadily dropping. The terms "lake effect snow" will become a way of life for that Texas kid.
