Still boggles my mind. We literally could not stop the lead option. Robert Wilson was just clearing out the corner every time they ran it - at least two of their TDs and maybe three came on that play. And then they go for 2 at the end and shelf it, optioning off the FB dive, and Berry blows it up.

Though not sooner born or sooner bred (born in Fort Worth), it always felt good when we signed guys like him, Rodney Tate, Steve Hall, & Lamel Foreman from north of the river.
    Casey Thompson’s turn.

Mark Berry was my hero that day. Lewis actually paid him a complement after the game for the play he made on the two-point attempt.

#50 - Tyson King, Captain & leader of the defense which John Mackovic not only ignored, he frequently forgot. I'll never forget asking Tyson how "his head coach" was doing. .

"How would I know, he hasn't spoken to me in three weeks".

That was the middle of the season

Also Mike Lockett watches Earl get taken down on a cold, bad day in Dallas.

He scored our only touchdown that day and gave us a glimmer of hope heading into the half. Anybody remember why he left the program?

post script: I hope bringing up this game doesn’t get me banned.

OMG that was a wretched day in Dallas. That game and the loss to Georgia probably cost Fred Akers a shot at being a Longhorn legend.

    Agreed.
OTOH if he had beaten the Irish that day, he would have had a difficult time matching that success in the following seasons. One of my few remaining vices in my autumn years is I’m somewhat of a cinephile. In my opinion Orson Welles put out some really great films in his career but none of them quite match up with Citizen Kane; his first. Fred could have experienced the same thing despite the fact that he won so many games. Would you have traded any three year stretch with Akers for Charlie’s three years? I sure would.

The Fred Akers years were the ten most political years in the history of The University's Athletic Department. It was beyond divisive, went way past UGLY, subversive, and shameful. The fact that Mack Brown was able to reunite 90+% of those people is likely the greatest achievement in University history.

Beating ND & Georgia would have only prolonged the inevitable as long as a number of people were still alive, and maybe beyond that.

For whatever you may think of Fred, he was loyal to The University, was an outstanding coach, and is a quality human being, things I cannot say about Mackovic, Charlie Strong, and the majority of David's assistants.

Yup, I was at the CB 1/1/78 and over optimistic about that '77 team beating ND that day. That loss did not harm Akers IMO, but losing to GA 1/1/84 did.

OK folks, it's about time to get out of your offseason funk. Some numbers are tougher than others, but we've got way too many studs to let only one show up a day. For example:

    #46 Malik Jefferson
    [IMG]

#46 Dusty Renfro (bonus points for having the reverse number in the background #64)

    #46 Bobby Micho
