According to OB, he said Sam has taken the majority of the snaps with the first team and will likely start against Maryland. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but there you go. Maybe a disappointment for some, but shouldn't be any surprise.

And look at the RBs — true frosh Ingram in the top 3. This kid must be looking very impressive.

Not a surprise SE gets the nod. I also won't be a surprised if TH brings in SB if the Horns are behind at some point in the future & need to pass.

Supposedly Rising has performed really well too. That's great to hear, but I was hoping he would redshirt unless he can beat out both Sam and Shane. The new rule will help. QB may turn into a bright spot. I can't believe I typed that.

I also read elsewhere Johnson is 2 or 3 at RB, a little different than what Alex posted. He apparently got a lot of carries in the scrimmage so that's interesting.

That's definitely confusing too, although I think the only thing I've heard about Johnson is that the OB staff says he looks really good, and the coaching staff says they're having to treat him like a freshman because he hasn't really played in the system. So who knows... they may take the position that if you're a junior that's neck and neck with a sophomore or freshman, the sophomore or freshman is getting the nod.

Was hoping he'd make an impact this year but frankly it sounds like the top 2 are ahead of the field by a pretty good margin. That's also the first I've seen Toneil Carter mentioned outside the context of "Toniel Carter needs to work on his ball security." Dude has all kinds of talent and if he cuts out the fumbles, he might even be the best in the group.

OK with me as long as he doesn't wait too long to bring SB in, and then blames the loss on SB.

The key to Texas' season is 1 QB as long as he is healthy.

I would be surprised. One of the biggest coaching failures last year was failing to bring SB in when we needed to pass (OU & Tech). If I could predict in the stands SE was going to throw it out of bounds or throw a pick, Herman and our OC should have been able to as well.

I guess we should immediatly start practicing against 8 or 9 men in the box.

Let's tap the brakes on the Sam bashing. Who was the last true freshman qb to amaze you? How was his line and run game?

Sam averaged just under 300 yards per game for the games he got serious playing time. Not bad with a patchwork o-line. He also led the team in rushing despite only starting 6 games and getting solid playing time in 8. ~250 yards per game passing is not bad considering he was a true frosh with line problems and we had no run threat from the RBs.

His biggest flaws (to my eyes) were the turnover problem, bailing on the pocket too quickly, and downfield accuracy. Turnovers were largely a true freshman problem (trying to do too much and be a hero) and bailing too early happens when your line is terrible at pass pro. It is better than holding the ball too long and creating negative plays (a Shane problem).

Down field accuracy was the only fundamental flaw to his game that I saw. Supposedly that has improved. But I will take a QB with some accuracy issues but who can make plays happen. He is great at extending plays and converting 3rd downs. A little more help this year and some better situational awareness and Sam is going to do very well.

And if not, Shane will be ready.
I really feel Shane's surgery had more to do with this than anything else.
Sam led the team while Shane rehabbed and for that reason the coaches left him starting with the ones in most practices.
There was no real separation so Sam gets the nod.
But I think the rope is still short from what I'm hearing.
Sam is the QB they think can best "win the Maryland game".
If he struggles and turns the ball over. Enter Shane.
But I am good with it.

My concern is who is calling plays and developing our game plan.

And let’s not forget who was (and is?) calling the plays.

To succeed offensively, we need better line play, better decision-making and performance at the QB position, better RB performance and, not least of all, better play-calling. The line is expected to be better, SE & SB have another year under their belts, and someone should emerge from our stable of RBs.

Has the person calling the plays and designing the offense actually changed? Actually I’m not sure.

Actually his biggest flaws were not knowing where he was in the game. The pick against OSU and throwing it OOBs against OU on 4th down. Those are serious mental mistakes that have got to be corrected this year. Hell you'd get onto a HS sophomore for those kinds of mistakes. I can see the fumble against USC more, but it still cost of the game. Hell Vince tried reaching over the goal on 1st down in the 14-3 loss to OU when we should have scored. It happens But the other crucial mistakes just can't happen at this level once much less 2 times in a 6-6 season. Probably lose to OU regardless, but we should have beaten USC and no worse than another overtime against OSU. We can get 9 wins in the regular season this year. Everyone replaces their QB except us and WV. Time to make some magic. And beat TCU for once. Can't believe I'm even typing that.

I cannot believe anyone is still citing the “OU out of bounds” play. Especially as a “serious issue.” Wasn’t it like 4th and 25 and jail break, with Sam zigzagging backward and backward like Fran Tarkenton, and he just heaves it off balance, probably not even to the line to gain? Wasn’t it Shane that got sacked and put us in that position? Maybe plus a penalty on the OL? Isn’t it pretty obvious that Sam had suffered a concussion 3-4 minutes earlier? Until the concussion hadn’t Sam —like 5 minutes before that — driven for what should have been the miraculous win? Basically outplaying the Heisman QB on the other side? Wasn’t it our defense that gave the game back? Then he throws a desperate Hail Mary out of bounds and he’s a stupid QB?

Let that play freaking go and try to make your argument on some other play.

I cant put much blame on Sam or Shane for anything last year..........with that patchwork OL we fielded for most of the year we are lucky both werent killed at some point.............never doubt the value of the OL which is the key for this year. If we get decent OL play then everything (run game/QB play) should be OTAY as Buckwheat would say.

My criticism was that the coaches fail to put SB in when he should be in. Examples being after Sam has a concussion and is throwing it out of bounds or is throwing a lot of picks or it is a clear long passing situation. My criticism was not of Sam in general, but that when it was clear Sam was having problems or we need the better downfield passer (concussion, picks, 3rd or 4th & long, end of the game and have to pass), the coaches failed to put SB in. If Sam just had a concussion, did it make sense to bring him in for back to back 3rd and 4th and long passing plays against OU? No. Did it make sense to stick with him when he was clearly having a bad day against Tech? No. I would not have pulled him against Okie State or USC. I am talking about when he clearly should have been pulled (OU & Tech), the coaches stuck with him and took the loss. Mack Brown was not afraid to make the right call and pull Vince Young for Chance Mock in 2003 against Texas Tech and 2004 against Missouri. Vince Young’s development was not hindered and Mock saved the day for two wins. It is better to put SB in if SE is hurt or having a freshman or sophomore brain fart game (VY had them). Everyone does not need to rush to criticize SB or defend SE’s honor. If SE is having a bad game or a concussion, I do not trust our coaches to put SB in, and it will lead to losses again.

Coach says he doesn't plan to use multiple QBs. Sam is the man until he isn't.

According to the depth chart, Sam is now 6'3" and 235 pounds. That's a big boy.

This is exactly the concern. I don't think anyone is surprised that SE was named the starter and we all are wishing that the turnover issues from last year can be dismissed as true freshman issues and we will see maturity in his decision making. I remember the flashes of brilliance against OU and USC but I also remember the boneheaded turnovers against OSU and Tech. Look forward to Sam exceeding all expectations this year and taking us to 10 wins!

I am actually very happy to be having a conversation about two very good qbs that could start and reports of a very good freshman qb backup. Nice.
