Texas has not had even an average Division I QB since Colt McCoy! That's a decade!! And, including the last Mack year, 90% of the games I have watched (about 9 per year, all on TV); the opposing QB way clearly better than ours!!! Were have the coaches been. Why not put a premium on accurate passing, defense recognition and ability to find the second receiver. We continue to recruit athletes; guys who can run (a little), so called Dual guys. I'll take a sturdy (6'2" plus) guy that is a proven passer with a little ability to make the first rusher miss and maybe runs 3 or 4 times per game. If we had a QB we would be 1-0 now and probably would have won 3 more games in each of the last 5 years. Our recruiting a
has been terrible. (Why did Herman not bring in a transfer with at least some throwing ability?)

David Ash could have been an exceptional QB.... until concussions cut short his time. We will never really know for sure.

IIRC, Colt was a bit of a surprise, right?, 1A or 2A Jim Ned?, not likely to grow into NFL size, just turned out like the Major, a lot of moxie, lots of quicks, "gym rat" attitude.

And of course there was 1977, Texas had 2 of the top 5 QBs in the nation, I think, one Mark McBath, an option QB, Jon Aune pro-style. OU ended both of their 1977 seasons within a quarter of each other, blown out knee and separated shoulder, respectively. Randy McEachern came in and continued Texas' 11-0 regular season and No.1 ranking. Of course he had Earl to hand off to, a great OL, and great assistant coaches Akers was able to keep on from DKR.

Correct me if I'm wrong but helping Akers included Leon Manley-OL, Leon Fuller and David McWilliams-coDCs.

My point being even with a 3rd stringer QB and a 1st year head coach, it can be done.

Well, Tom Herman won a NC in 2014 with a 3rd string QB as OC at OSU. I wonder why he cant do wonders for SE? It's only been one game lets see how Sam looks tomorrow night. And, maybe we'll see Cameron Rising. He is known as an excellent passer but just a frosh right now. I was never able to pass worth a crap, so I am out of my league here. But....seems Sam does not throw receivers open. He throws right to them. Oh and Alabama won a NC last year without a good passing QB save the second half of their last game. Nebraska won several NC's without a passing QB so did OU in the 70's and 80's. The spread gives the QB position hyper importance. Eventually, that offense will be out of style. A smash mouth running team like Bama will usually crush a spread team. I think Texas needs to develop itself into a ball control running offense and I think they will be able to beat spread teams with that. But.....they have to lose TB for that to happen.

I think TH is on board with a ball control running offense. And I think he will lose TB. Hope he does not wait too long.

Technically we have five QBs on the team if you include Heard, a coveted recruit. We have adequate if not excellent talent available at the position.

While I don’t know if Rising, Buechele or Thompson will be the answer, I’m pretty sure that Ehlinger isn’t. It’s nothing personal. And yes, maybe he turns it around. But for my money we have seen enough last minute meltdowns to come to the conclusion that the team needs to go in a different direction. Sure, he’s had moments of greatness, but every one of them was overshadowed, and almost every time we lost the game.

Some believe that SE is “just one game away from turning the corner.” I see the risk/reward on that perspective to be too heavily weighted on the risk side.

    Time to move on.

I would argue Ash was average-to-above-average, but we only saw him play as a true freshman and sophomore, plus one game as a junior against UNT. He most likely wouldn't have been as good as Colt, nor Vince, but I could see him being as good as freshman-sophomore Colt, which was better than anything we've had since Ash.

The jury's still out on Buechele. And arguably Ehlinger, for that matter. He's a true sophomore. 19 years old. Kinda early to give a final verdict.

What I'd like to see is a QB stepping into the starting job as a redshirt junior. That's half of our problem.

Change the thread title to "Develop a QB".

Until we either happen upon another VY or amazing transfer, we will not see consistent play untill we bring in a QB that can redshirt as a freshman and have time to learn...Picking one season to suffer in order to build up a new young QB is so much more preferable to what we've had for the last decade...

While there is little doubt that the redshirt year is a majorly plus, there have been more than a few cases that a true freshman has come in and acquitted themselves quite well. In fact, Buechele was pretty darn effective as a true freshman until the injuries stated piling up. Many of us were impressed. We tend to forget his amazing accuracy, particularly on the long passes.

Another example is Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama. We’ll see how this year plays out but Bama doesn’t win the NC last year without him.

My point is that the fact that we have been forced to use true freshmen recently is not in and of itself the primary reason for our ineffectiveness and inconsistency on offense. And I’m not convinced that even here and now, a true freshman couldn’t come in and lead this team to a successful season.

One more point. The true freshmen of today are light years ahead of the players of even 10 years ago. The training has advanced that much IMO.

The starting QB for USC should be a senior in HS. Let's see how he does

Or perhaps the player that gives Texas the best chance of winning, regardless of age or class. Heck, maybe it’s Heard? (I know. No chance. But the point has merit.)

Based on what I have seen relative to the decisions made through 14 games, I can’t say that I am brimming with confidence that Herman will make the right call.

    1. Was there no Graduate transfer to allow us to develop the young guys?
    2. Buechele showed promise as a passer last year. BUT he was not physically able to run Herman's offense. Some of his injuries could have been prevented by a smarter game plan. Same probably true if he plays this year. He should never run the option unless it's third down in the fourth quarter with 5 minutes left in a close game.

Didn't mean to imply he'd struggle due to age or inexperience. Quite the opposite. Could have phrased it better.

Alabama won title games with Jake Coker and Greg McElroy. Ohio State won with Craig Krenzel. Florida won with Chris Leak.

Several of the guys we've had come through here could have been those guys, if they had been on those teams. Or at least could have been Chance Mock if they had been on a better Texas team (who was mostly pretty effective for us, other than the whole "he just wasn't VY" part...)

Good, probably, but good enough? Does anyone remember constant comments by the coaches when confronted about a qb recruit that they backed off on because they wanted to stay with what they had during the Ash years? They ignored talent just to stay away from any qb controversy. Can someone come up with a list of the high level quarterbacks from Texas that Mack did not go after during that era? Luck comes to mind.

Mack bet his job on Ash and I fear Tom is similarly as hard headed. Sacrificing a team for development of a kid who may never get where he needs to be can be a big gamble. He could lose his team. Sam will not stop the bone-headed plays anytime soon. He has too much sandlot ball ingrained in him. (Hope I am wong!) And Shane is a lot closer to Colt than Sam is to Vince. So roll the offence a bit to a Colt style and play Shane because you cannot roll Sam any closer to Vince; he is what he is for now.

Tom wants to race on a fast dry track with his highly run oriented qb system but he has a bit of a mudder in this race. The speed horses with great arms come out of Texas high schools every year. They just don’t go to college in Austin. The pro style qbs won’t go if Tom wants to run them too much either, because, it’s kills the career at the next level. They do go to other Big XII schools and they are lining up in Norman. The skill boys, they be loving themselves that system.

I'm totally with Worster here. Ash was the #17 QB in FBS in 2012 during his sophomore year (see below). If not for his concussion issue, I think he could have been the next "one."

    2012 FBS (I-A) Leaders
    RK
    PLAYER TOTAL QBR
    1 Johnny Manziel, TA&M 91.3
    2 Marcus Mariota, ORE 86.7
    3 AJ McCarron, ALA 84.9
    4 Collin Klein, KSU 83.1
    5 Denard Robinson, MICH 82.7
    6 Tajh Boyd, CLEM 81.8
    7 Landry Jones, OKLA 81.1
    8 Aaron Murray, UGA 80.9
    9 Geno Smith, WVU 79.4
    10 Nick Florence, BAY 79.3
    11 Teddy Bridgewater, LOU 78.9
    12 Matt Scott, ARIZ 78.2
    13 Cody Fajardo, NEV 78.2
    14 David Fales, SJSU 77.6
    15 Chuckie Keeton, USU 77
    16 Seth Doege, TTU 76.7
    17 David Ash, TEX 76.2

The fact remains to the OP, it's been (imo) 6 years since we've had anything Top Tier under center.

Fantastic idea. Let's go back and time and make sure Herman grabs a couple of guys during our last recruiting class. Oh, look at that! Already did it.
