Duke, I agree with the penalty when warranted, but note that I said
We are at the point where a clean head up hit to the chest of a receiver resulting in the ball coming out is called targeting just because the DB separated the ball from the receiver.

wow ... IDK how easy's last was appropriate to the game thread ... and I've only seen the last page of this thread ... so preemptive apologies for repeat of excellent analysis points. ;)

but from my unaugmented observation post in 104 (no binos/radio ... left 'em ... sigh). I did watch the game on DVR yesterday afternoon, however.

Didn't wear anyone's beer this time! YAY! (though with the peddling in the stands and the Bevo Blvd the smell wasn't faint)

Proud of everyone around me who paid proper respect to the opening ceremonies. The other two guys ... grow up and recognize. The Hornet guy did great on timing ... bit too much altitude, but I get it. Threatened with being keelhulled/all. I was concerned from reading the remarks of last week about the band's "running in" ... I thought that was running down the field to form-up. BEVO BLVD ... the team entry was cool, but otherwise, it was a mosh pit. Evidently gates open later now?

Horns got a lot of help from USC, a little help from the refs ... but played well enough to win anyway. Hat Tip to the team for being ready to play ball.

Love Tre Watson's running between the tackles. Sam was good overall. Gary Johnson is the player I knew he could be ... he was playing better than Malik a couple of years ago. Thankful our punting hasn't dropped off much and our place kicking is good-excellent.
We still have too many issues on offense play calling. I guess this is going to be a continual problem until we decide to adopt a scheme which will consistently attack the LOS. Sometimes they just call the right defense and you just get beat in your assignment ... but MOST often, our scheme and play calling more resemble flag football than real football.

Last night was the least "offensive" for those "dancing" plays I've seen in a long time, but there were still plenty of 'em and accounted for most of the possession stalls. I know we can't do "3 yards and a cloud of dust" anymore ... but we can't keep moving the ball sideways and dancing toward the LOS either. We're WAY closer to the latter than the former. Running the ball from a pass block scheme.

I know I sound like a broken record.

Still trying to adopt this 3 down linemen. Especially after seeing the replay ... we had MAJOR gap-o-sis on the line and it's a wonder the USC kid never saw that. Perhaps my understanding of this game is too pedestrian to accept some other method of covering the gaps ... but my good ness ... how do we ever stop anything with <4 linemen?

But ... my first game with the Vette ... she's now 1-0 at Flying V. Gave her a little kiss on the driver side TTop.

This game is the first time I recall having multiple player tweet out about the awesomeness of the crowd, the stadium, the culture. Grad transfers are LOVING it.
