ESPN: Texas has 'maybe 5' players who could start at TCU

 

I don't know about that. They seemed to fold their tent in the second half against the Ohio State the other day.

 

The guy who wrote the 247 article could have written a more effective rebuttal if, instead of just flapping his gums, he had compared the starters for each school at each position and then assessed which of the two, in his opinion, would start if they were on the same team.

 

TCU is well coached but if you check their recruiting they do more with less (like Baylor).....soooo I'm saying Boyd and a couple of our freshmen on defense would get in there.....They have some good receivers but I'll bet they'd like LJH or Duvernay or Collin Johnson wearing purple as well...defensively they're tough but can be had....I'm just hoping our defense is ready for their mobile qb this week....

 

Apparently ESPN’s Rittenberg is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

The people on this board are probably smarter than most of the “experts” on TV or in the print media. (And I mean that.) This ESPN guy would have probably already been banned from HF by Dionysus...for stupidity. After all, shouldn’t there be a minimum knowledge threshold?

Until Texas can score more than 14 points on TCU, these types are articles are earned.

I think we have 4 or 5 guys Urban wishes he had on that team. Not that he doesn't already have a very talented team, just that Urban finds a way to get as much talent on the field as possible, and we do have talent on this team. TCU was basically playing at home. It's not like they were at the shoe and 100k Ohio State fans were drowning out their play calling....

As I saw it up close and personal in DC a few weeks ago, don’t underestimate the “interim coach”.

 

The difference between TCU and Texas isn't the level of talent on the field, Texas is more talented. The difference is the head coach.
Patterson is one of those coaches that can beat you with his guys, switch teams and beat you with your guys.

The TCU RB is better than any of our RBs. I'd take Raegor over all our WRs, their Oline is a question mark since they are never asked to block on pass plays for more than 3 seconds. I know I'd take Calvin Anderson over anyone they have.
Texas defense is every bit as good as the TCU defense, as a unit, I'd take the Texas defense since they aren't undersized like TCU's defense is. I'd also take our secondary since the only game I've seen them play they didn't look too good.
Truth is the biggest difference in this game is Gary Patterson for what I said above, it's up to Tom Herman to challenge this perception and win the game.

Outside of Bama Georgia, and Clemson, Texas has as much talent as any team in the country.
The issues with this team isn't talent, it's getting it to play consistent, and that is the job of the coaches.
I have been the biggest critic of Ehlinger, as he is our starter but he shouldn't be. He isn't ready to be a college QB. However, he has talent, and leadership skills. He just needs time to develop, and that shouldn't have to happen on the fly, not at Texas, but it is.
The Texas oline is good, not great but good, I'd take Calvin Anderson over 90% of the starting Left Tackles in college football. I think he is that good. Not sure how I feel about the rest, but when compared to what Texas has had over the last 8 years, this line is like 95 Nebraska.
Texas receivers are the best and deepest I've ever seen them. But with that, they have a fatal flaw, they don't block for crap. If they ever learned to block this offense would be scary good. Some of those quick passes would turn into huge gains. That is actually what separates this group from our 2005 receivers, they were great blockers and it made Vince a much more dangerous runner. Going against TCU Ragnor will be the best receiver on the field, but after him the next 3 or 4 are all Longhorns.
Texas RBs have a lot to be desired, It's like we have a roster filled with second string guys. The TCU RB will be by far the best back on the field. Hopefully we can get some production out of Ingram, Watson and Young.
Dline - Texas has the 2nd best Dline in the Big 12, its up for debate if Oklahoma's is better or not, but for now I'll give them the nod. TCU has a bunch of undersized guys that are fast but get worn down, that is what happened in the tOSU game. There aren't too many Dlines that have the Talent Texas has right now.
The same can be said for DB and Linebacker. Texas is thin at linebacker, but the talent is unmistakable. Caden Stern is going to be a star. Hands down he will be Big 12 freshmen of the year. I could see him being a pre-season All-American next year.
Anyone that says only about 5 guys could start for TCU is just tossing poop against the wall trying to see what will stick. Nothing but click bait, the truth is there might be 1 or two of our coaches that are as good as what TCU has, but not players.

 

Some improvement since 2017, but overall the receivers are still struggling to learn how to play the position. When Alabama's receivers play the position better than you, you have problems. Let's get them to learn how to run routes properly (which will help spread the field) then work on the blocking.

 

Alot of good things in your posts on this subject, but I am expecting Ingram to prove to be real special...think you are discounting him too much.

There would be NO question about the talent of these kids if they were in the Gary Patterson program.

That said, the Gary Patterson program has been in place for over a decade.

We have no such "program" per se. 100% turnover in coaching X2 in 6 years does that.

Until we have any continuity at coaching, we'll do less with more, and our talent will get questioned.

 

I understand what your saying but how much continuity did we have when Mack Brown turned a 4-7 team into a 9-3 team? But he had how many years of head coaching experience? Maybe that's what's really needed - an experienced coach, not one w/ just 2 years under his belt before being hired here.

I didn't read/hear Rittenberg's comments as having anything to do with coaching (though I see the reason the Patterson/talent development angle would be raised by posters here).
I read his comments as an ignorant swipe at our ability/success at recruiting.

Austin, you’re assessment is actually very encouraging. If you’re right about the defense, even if Raegor is great and the RB is as well, I’ll gladly take Ingram and CJ, LJH and the WR crew.
I agree about Patterson. That is, until TH shows what he can do. I’m hoping that happens tomorrow. It just might.

 

I disagree. We think our players are better because of the name Texas. Do we have a lot of talent? Yes. Are we the 4th most athletic team in the nation? No.

A decent amount considering the change as I think Mack did a good job of making it as continuous as he could, but we also really did have a massive amount of talent and badly underachieved to go 4-7. After all it was a bunch of the same guys who went 10-2-1 the previous year.

 

The talent of which I speak is true freshman recruits dazzling on the field. If you think I meant Breckyn Hager, then we're not on the same page.....it appears that the new blood being inserted into games is lighting a spark for the team.....and we beat an immobile qb so our defensive front was not exposed. We shall see tomorrow.....My point from the first game is, except for true and redshirt freshmen, this was the same team from last year minus the ones that left early for the NFL that were never close in last years' Maryland game AT HOME. Why was a different result expected ON THE ROAD? Moving forward, this years' USC team that squeaked out a win against Texas last year lost their qb to the Jets and also that lightning quick RB from the great state of Texas that played for the Men of Troy also left early. USC may ask "how come we didn't play well against the same team?" Well, USC didn't have the same team as last year, we had our qb back and a line with more experience and at home. It's all relative, dude......matchups......etc....

 

WHOOOAAAA padnuh.…..Mack Brown got the #1 "recruit" in the country when Ricky decided to come back for his senior year to win the Heisman.....Ricky got injured against the Aggies that year (IIRC), still got the Doak, and was hungry for the Heisman. Mack did recruit well off of that first season (Simms/Redding soon followed) and took us to the promised land. But to pretend Tom Herman inherited the same situation(Foreman could've been the key, no animosity, he needed to take the $), is not factual. Right now Herman resembles Mackovic for my Longhorn historical memory because younger players are getting on the field and contributing. After four full seasons, if we haven't seen 10 wins, I'll stand down and say Herman isn't the answer. I think I'm at 55% correct right now. We beat TCU at home, it means Herman outsmarted/outcoached the greatest coach who ever lived (I thought it was Saban or Meyer, but after reading these threads, pretty sure it's Gary Patterson)….

My point was we have at least top 10-15 talent, that aren't just freshmen, and the coaching hasn't backed it up yet. Let's hope the coaches are in the ball game today!

Texas went 9-3 because of Ricky Williams and an improved QB play from Major Applewhite. Brown got a winning lottery ticket when Ricky came back and struck oil when Major turned out to be as good as he was.

Today's win was very encouraging in that it was a complete win for the program, both for the players and the coaches. There is some very noticeable improvement in every aspect of this team Sam is improving as a decision maker and as a leader, he still is a terrible passer but he is growing.

I stand by my statement, this team can go toe to toe with anyone outside of bama, Clemson, and Georgia, this is including tOSU, Oklahoma, Stanford, Washington, Wisconsin, and LSU. Talent is not our problem, coaching has been out biggest problem.

No today's loss was about turnovers, not sure if you can blame coaching on fumbles and interceptions. This is what happens when young QBs try to do too much.

 

@Austin_Bill I agree with most of what you said except the last. When Texas gives up turnovers we all blame it on coaching. So, we forced 4 turnovers That means we coached our defense better than TCU coached its offense.

 

Den, I am not either, but can see the future and it is Herman and more great recruiting years, with players at all positions like Sterns coming to Texas....a la Mack Brown, the stupid decisions today will fade with winning.....
