I can see I'm going to have to have an annual fire Tim Beck thread. We will be mediocre until he's gone. Avg 2 to 3 yrds up the middle and then need 1 yard in the second quarter and you run to the side 2 consecutive plays. Then in the 3rd you keep Sam in the pocket every drive and he clearly is not a pocket passer with a slightly better than average line. Tim is a complete idiot and if Tom doesn't do something then just like as the CEO of a company it's on him!

Annual? More like weekly...I would say quarterly, but I don't want anyone getting the idea I only meant once every three months.

I don't know how much to blame on Beck. On the one hand he is responsible for Ehlinger, but I've seen some improvement from him over these last 4 games. He is much more disciplined as a decision maker. Still his passes are terrible, only about 1 in 5 is a good pass. The rest are generally completed by our receivers making great plays on the ball.
As for play calling, I was under the impression that Herman took over the play calling.
The one thing you can't take away from Beck, he is a witch of a recruiter. He has brought in some great QB talent and as I understand it, he is responsible for recruiting in California this year.
In Summary, I'd tread lightly on the "Fire Tim Beck Line". He might be better than you think. Lets revisit this at the end of the year and judge him on a full season of work.

I bet his play calling will improve while recruiting/players on the field improve...

Herman says he can overrule every call so I am blaming him. He should be experienced enough to recognize that when you are over matched at a position, no matter how many times you run the play it will not be successful. The TCU LB’s were so much faster than the Texas RB’s trying to run sweeps only put the RB at risk for injury. Running between the tackles finally worked.

Agree, and if they took the option for Sam to run out of the equation some times, I think running between the tackles would be even better than it has been.

I complain about the play calling as much as anyone else but here's what I think and I was saying this with Charlie. Until our offensive line is elite as it should be, then the play calling will be impacted by the siege mentality. The line this year is not going to be remembered years from now but it's better than last year without a doubt. And I think when you're not sure if your QB can survive a pass rush or if average at best running backs can find a hole then it's going to make you think asymmetrically consciously or unconsciously. I don't know if Beck is trying to see what sticks by running plays that "we know as the experts on the internet" won't work just as a way of keeping the defense honest. The main thing is predictability and near the end of the first half and the start of the second I was saying the TCU coaches had us figured out. But then we took over. A strip fumble by Bimage and Caden's great interception and return turned this thing around. Sam isn't making bonehead mistakes anymore (his discipline was mentioned above as well deserved props to Beck and his coaching) and the offense all of a sudden moved the ball in a methodical manner until one of our stud playmakers made a play. In the end, when we get more four and five star offensive linemen in here it is my view that this program will be a consistent contender for the final four.

Maybe not this year but it's there for the taking given the current momentum and the obvious spirit and atmosphere in the locker room that we see in the video's. The recruits are gonna' notice if they haven't already.

Just imagine an elite running back too...

Case in point...on that last drive, there were at least two plays that were called that should have been stopped short of the first down due to being straight out of the GDGD playbook. It was ONLY the second effort of the players that we got the first down. Play calling, on a collective grade, still sucks...

No fan of beck at all but bringing in hand has worked wonders for pass protection compared to last year and has given beck more time to try a few new things although Herman may be insisting he try these things like Charlie should have done with Vance a heck of a lot sooner. Like bystander said sam is not making those boneheaded plays that cost us 3 or 4 games last year without those mistakes we would have been a 10 win team so I give beck his credit for coaching him up. But I would still love to see tech can kingsbury and we swoop up and steal him no doubt we are a playoff team with him callin our plays and Orlando controlling this defense.

I still maintain Herman is working on consistency because we cant fire the coordinators every year regardless of what I think about Becks abilities. If Herman can continue to work with Beck to produce more points and wins then I'm good right now.

However, when we have a big brain fart, firing Beck will be the first thing to come up every time. I guess that doesnt matter because our fanbase will call for someones head, player or coach, no matter the result.

Correct and TCU is a very good team. Those that can't see that are missing a great deal.

Apparently. I'm no TB proponent, but I certainly can't find much fault with yesterday's game other than the 4th down. Damn, we just beat a team that seemed impossible to beat. Why can't we just enjoy it?

I sort of agree with this^^^. I don't think Beck/Herman's play calling elevated our offense. I do think it was conservative to a fault, but also we played well enough, especially on Defense, and also on offense, to win.
On offense Sam deserves credit because he did NOT turn over the ball. This is his greatest difference between this year and last.
On defense we deserve great credit for forcing two huge turnovers that gave our offense short fields (one yard on one TO) which led to the winning points.
And the DEFENSE deserves great credit for big Stands deep in our end of the field.
And on offense, our RECEIVERS are lights out. They are THE play-makers that are playing at a championship level right now.

I didn't see a lot to complain about in the play calling, I'm not sure what you guys were talking about. I hated the failed 4th down call, that was just a stupid play, there were a couple other plays that were so slow developing, they just got blown up before they ever developed.
But truth is if Texas lost, it wouldn't have been because of play calling. Beck is a witch of a recruiter and he is responsible for all the success Texas has had in California. If he were fired, I'm pretty sure he'd be unemployed for about 10 minutes, and Texas would hate the results of having to recruit against him again. What I'm hoping is next year Beck be placed in charge of recruiting Houston again.
As it sits, I think our offense would be pretty damn good if we get a few difference makers like Sanders and maybe a few more Olinemen. I'd love to see what Beck can do with Bama level talent, but I don't want to see him in Bama doing it.

See, here is my problem with everybody's kneejerk reaction to that play. And before I start, I admit I think it was a terrible play call too. The worst of the night, in fact.
But how do we know Sam didn't check into that play? How do we know he didn't miss a check and failed to audible out of the play? How do we know it wasn't a single missed block (somebody said Beck whiffed) that destroyed what was otherwise set up to be a successful play?
Answer - we don't. Some fans just reflexively scream about mensa boy or Beck. And in so doing, all that happens is those fans reveal just how little they actually know, and just how poorly they handle their emotions because of a football game. Really? Grow the hell up, people.

Actually TH said that was the call and admitted they made a bad decision. I think Ricky nailed it when he said exactly what I was thinking. First, you don't go for it against a top defense on your side of the field. Second, if you do you don't run a play you haven't executed effectively all season.

That's not a play you run against a fast, disciplined defense.

That, and they monkeyed up the 1st down series right before they missed the FG (2nd half). 3 straight dumb plays ending in a missed FG.

I’m thrilled with the win, and the last two weeks. They were potentially direction changing. But...
Notwithstanding the caliber of defense we faced yesterday, my opinion is that with a plethora of talent, this team is still underperforming offsenively. When Brown brought in Harsin it made a difference. When Strong upgraded from Watson to Gilbert it made a difference.

We may be stuck with Beck for now, and frankly I don’t know who is or will be available to replace him. I’ll add that the O-Line is getting better and if Sam can hone his accuracy, that would help.

But ultimately I wonder if Beck can get the offense to where we would like to see it.

    4th and 4 on your own 45.
Punting is the only play that should have been called.
There's no defending any other play.
It didn't hurt us too badly, we won, so no big deal.
    But cut that **** out.

It was 4th and 1 when we failed. 4th and 4 is the one we successfully converted that made our first TD happen.
