The bye week came at an ideal time this week for Sam. I think all the guys need a break!

According to Dr. Google. (You see, Dukesteer is quite resourceful.)

An athlete with a grade 1 injury of the AC joint will experience tenderness and discomfort palpation and movement of the joint. Grade 1 sprains involve only partial damage to the joint capsule and the AC ligament. ... A grade 3 injury involves the complete rupture of the acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligaments.

This bye couldn't have come at a better time. I'm wishing a full and speed recovery for Mr. Ehlinger. As he goes, so goes the offense

I think this will change the play calling a bit. Sam needs to run less. He needs to protect that shoulder, as it will be tender the rest of the season. Might be a great opportunity to increase the # and variety of running plays that are called for the running backs.

Maybe even hold him out entirely for oSu?

That would give him 3 weeks without contact until WVU comes to Austin.

Younguns heal a lot quicker than us geezers, but I think we need a REAL healthy SE for the WVU game but can probably get by oSu with Buechele alright.

    A gamble?

But if SE isn't quite 100%, he may favor that shoulder either leading to errors or worse a more serious injury.

Pulling for either one; I think the Horns are in good hands now at QB with either one under center.

I agree in large measure and would like to see us start Shane with the option of playing Sam later—if he’s needed and able. But it would be ideal to come out of Stillwater with a win while resting Sam.

I don't know that I agree with this.
    I want Sam back asap.
But, like others, I would almost rather see Shane start against OSU.
He's going to get the reps with the ones next week anyway.
And the game plan would need to be changed with less QB runs anyway with Sams injury.
Give Sam another week to heal for WV.

Oh, don't get me wrong... I want Buechele in games and I wish it hadn't taken an injury and so many passed games for him to finally see some action. I really would have liked to have seen him in games earlier than this. I hope he gets reps with the ones, more experience and practice time for the backup QB is never going to be a bad thing. However, I just think the offense is more complete (QB run threat, mostly) when Ehlinger is in. :hookem:

    I agree with this.
But will they use him in the run game the same way against OSU after this injury.
I'm just saying if you are going to tweak the offense so the QB is not as much a threat to run you might as well give Shane all the reps and let him handle OSU.
Then Sam can come back with our regular offense and brutalize people against WV.

Looks like it happened on a QB sweep to the left. Clean hit. After he got up and they were looking to the side for the next play, you could see him moving his arm as if to loosen up the shoulder.

The sprain will not be healed in two weeks so it seems foolish to give OSU the chance at a hit on that shoulder and you know they will try. No way any running plays should be called for Sam. Just seems to me it would be best to start Shane and scheme around him.

Looked like he just landed right on it with the weight of the defender(s) driving it into the ground. Still snapped off a good pass or two right afterwards.

I admit I'm not knowledgeable about a grade 1 shoulder sprain. It IS his throwing arm / shoulder... so care must be taken in not rushing him back.

I suppose rest, anti-inflammatories and whirlpool may be enough. Per TH, he could be doing some light throwing by the weekend.

If he were to play 2 weeks after this type of injury is that rushing it? I don't know.

I agree Sam should rest a couple of weeks to get ready for West Virginia. I think sams running is part of the skill set and should never be done away with since it limits his effectiveness ....

Even though they can be effective at the college level I don't like running QB offenses. The QB is generally the only guy who passes the ball more than once in a game. in the modern college game passing accounts for more than half the yards and TDs. If the QB get hurt because he takes too many hits running you are screwed. If he hurts his shoulder it can be difficult to throw the ball accurately.

How many big school QBs who are featured as runners make it through a full season without injuries that keep them out for multiple games?

OSU's defense has been allowing rushing and passing, so Watson and Ingrahm should be the feature with Shane or Rising handling the duties. Giving Sam another week is best for the team, but remember Sam is the one who played with a broken bone in high school so he will want to play. When to play and when to sit is one of the last pieces in the maturation process for college athletes.

Hopefully the two weeks will allow Beck/Herman to devise a normal running scheme that is not predicated on the defense having to cover both the QB and the option back.

Bottom line? How many teams can win with their back-up playing virtually the entire game? Well, there's Alabama. Probably a few others but the point is we did it.

I'm pretty surprised some of you are ready to just hand Sam an extra week of rest that it appears he won't need just so he can prep for West Virginia, considering we had to hold on to beat Baylor at home just two days ago. A loss at Okie State counts just as much as a loss to West Virginia.

On those plays where you run Sam just insert LJH in the wildcat.

If he's 100% by all means start Sam.
I just don't see him being 100% and if he goes out in the first half of OSU it might be for the rest of the season.
I think we can beat OSU with Shane and a little creative game planning.
    Defense will be the key.
