On a day when not a lot went right

The Horns found a way to win. This game reminded me of K-State in '06, the Horns are rolling Colt has found a new gear and then bang first drive he gets injured, the defense falls apart and Horns lose a game they had no business losing, then two weeks later the coaches rush Colt back too soon and one bad loss becomes two. Yesterday the defense once again gives up long first drive score by opposition but found a way to get things under control and offense did just barely enough. It was an ugly win but on day when starting QB goes down early, Dicker misses two field goals, the Texas defense was susceptible to slants over middle all day long, and Texas team as a whole was due for let down after OU, they still found way to win. :hookem:

This team used to lose these games....almost all of them. Things are turning for the better.

Agree with all except the defense falling apart analogy. The Texas defense either quit playing or fell apart at the start of the 4th quarter against ou and got worse against Baylor (two TD drops by Baylor receivers saved the day). Something is wrong with the Defense, and Orlando has two weeks to either get it fixed or scheme around it. Tech and Iowa State have the same offense as Baylor, and Iowa State has a much better defense.

I think that the D will steadily improve .. of course, I hope so. Sterns and Foster, true freshmen, will continue to grow. The D line seems effective (although they were probably spent late in the OU game), and Johnson and Wheeler seem to be playing well. We have other talented freshmen that have yet to see the field. Perhaps they will between now and the end of the regular season.

To my admittedly untrained eye, our greatest weakness is at the nickel position. Locke is a force on running plays but a disaster waiting to happen on pass plays. He simply cannot cover slot receivers. My hope is that someone like Thompson will emerge and can be used more in passing situations.

I trust Orlando to continuously improve his unit.

It wasn't all that exciting, but Texas won - with the backup QB. That's not easy to do against any team, much less one with a legit QB and WRs.

That’s ominous sounding! God laughs when we predict the future.
I like what coach says “go 1-0 this week”. One week at a time, one week at a time. We’ll get there.

I would say nickel and corner. Boyd has been inconsistent, and that gets masked when people start attacking Davis, who seems like he's regressed some as the year has gone on.

The other one that has to get fixed is DL depth. It's a pretty substantial drop-off right now when Nelson and Omenihu are on the sidelines, and we have to be able to rotate six guys at least in the Big XII.

Help may be on the way. Overshown, a prized recruit as we all know, has been injured. My bet is that he sees the field against OSU.

On the D-line, I’m surprised we haven’t seen Coburn. I expected for him to be playing by now.

These two weeks might give these players and one or two more the reps they need.

    Help at CB/nickel?

I'm concerned about our CB depth. I'm hoping Cook and Green come on in the 2nd half.

I want to see Cook and Green (and Overshown) as well. We haven’t had the luxury of playing them but even so, and with all of the poorly defended double moves and uncovered slot receivers, only OU put numbers up on us. I doubt we’ll see Boyd or Davis replaced any time soon, nor should we. But with more weapons available in Orlando’s quiver, I am hopeful that we can tighten things up.

But again, 17 points against Baylor’s offense is about as good as one could hope for...

I'm surprised too, especially after seeing Christmas-Giles get a series against OU. Maybe they're determined to shirt him?

i mentioned this about Ingram, but I wonder if a lot of these freshman bodies coming in just aren't as developed. Coach said that outright about Ingram.

We read multiple posts on here the past 10 months talking about the difference strengths & conditioning has made for our players that were already here a year. Imagine those coming straight out of high school.

In regards to redshirting, one more game and then it's open the chute and let the big dogs play at will.
But does a bowl game count under the new redshirt rules?

I'm guessing that Georgia, Washington, State Penn and West Virginia, would be more than happy to trade our ugly win for their ugly losses.

As I understand it, it does not. The rule just says four games - I don't think it makes an exception if one is a bowl game.

This is spot on, Herman has mentioned getting all the freshman a full off season with Yancy McNight will be huge.

This is what the NCAA's website says:
College athletes competing in Division I football can participate in up to four games in a season without using a season of competition.
Without qualification 4 games means 4 games so CCG's, CFP Games and Bowl Games all count (I guess).

I don't think any of the frosh safeties or cornerbacks will red shirt. Green and Overshown (who has played rover) have been in 4 and 3 games respectively according to the participation chart at TexasSports.

By the way, while I have not observed Wilbon on all of his snaps, I've certainly noticed him on some plays looking like a powerful, disruptive force in the middle.

He's improved. He showed a few flashes last year as well, but inconsistently. We need him to step up pretty quickly, and it's good to see he seems to be making progress.

Great post, great concept. While I long for the days we start blowing teams out, I will take these wins. In this season I will take playing down, and playing up to opponents. Not get blown out while we are building.
Remember this is college football played by 18 to 21,22 year old young men. Emotions are part of it. You can’t have your A game every week, just look at last week.
We are learning to win and believe.
Most importantly, recruiting, and young players demand excellence. Figure out a way to win. Even when you don’t have it that week.
