MY Robert Brewer story....

Summer of 1981 I was in school and living off of Red River....one very hot afternoon I set off on foot with gym bag in hand to work out at Gregory...as I started away from the apartments, so did this other guy and we were walking almost side by side a block and started up a conversation after he asked if I was going to work out....he told me that he was working out really hard this Summer because he was going to try and walk on as QB this Fall...…

...not much bigger than I was, I thought, "yeah, me, too!"....

It was the first of several workouts we had that Summer with this guy I knew at the time as Robert....then, come the Fall...there he was...ON THE FIELD leading the 'HORNS!!! For me, it was something out of a movie....I'm sure for him, the same....

Then, we made it all the way to the Cotton Bowl to face ALABAMA and Bear Bryant....and ROBERT BREWER had the key touchdown run that sparked our win over BAMA....a HUGE one....

I was working in the ticket office and had 50 yard line seat behind the Cotton Bowl Queen (our University Sweetheart) and all the SWC conferences representatives....

Watching ROBERT BREWER beat BAMA was a remarkable event....watching this guy I had worked out with, with nothing but a goal in front of him, achieve his goal and on the biggest stage....slay BAMA and BEAR BRYANT....just unbelievable, to this day....

I suspect that more than a few of us had mixed emotions watching the game yesterday. Don’t get me wrong, we were all pulling for Texas but it was painful seeing the Brewer family in the stands wearing different colors. Legacy means something and it’s a shame that Charlie Brewer wasn’t recruited by Texas. Ultimately it was Strong’s call and I suppose he did what he thought was best for the program.

I have to say with the heart the 3rd generation Brewer showed in some plays yesterday, Strong was mistaken to not recruit him. If he has the same great team-first attitude Shane has now, he could be playing in Burnt Orange & White. He’s far too classy to play with the current Baylor squad of personal-foulin’ goons.

I’m thinking Tom Herman may have given him an offer with the clear understanding he would be in Shane’s position now. TH would know his style of physical QB-play offense, Sam could get hurt like what happened yesterday and the backup QB has to take over the offense.

IF it were my kid playing for Baylor....I'd be in a BAYLOR shirt, too....my first cheerleader partner Jenna Hay McEachern (Randy's wife) sent their son to o.u. ….which in polite circles is just NOT DONE!! ha! seeing her in an o.u. sweatshirt at a bowl game made me throw up in the back of my mouth a bit....

Mack recruited Case McCoy, almost certainly a legacy decision. I believe that it was the right decision. Then there was Lou Holtz’ grandson. Again, for me, the right decision.

Texas is a family, and that means something. I can’t imagine Ricky or Vince’s son playing for another team, but that’s just me.

We didn't recruit either or Earl's sons. Don't remember where they ended up playing.

Yeah. Mack would have found a way, most likely, to have Brewer in burnt orange but the sad reality is that you just can't take them all. I can't remember if the announcers said if we'd offered to let Brewer walk on... I don't see how we wouldn't have.

It wasn't just us who passed on him.. his list of offers was short with SMU and Baylor being the two biggest names.

And this is the other thing.. if a guy doesn't fit your system, and Brewer doesn't fit ours at the moment, what else are you going to do? I wish it would have worked out differently for the Brewers but I was proud for his family to be there in the green and gold cheering on their son.

Not everyone will agree with me, but I'm ok offering 3* legacies because they have history and intangibles.

But I'm less inclined to offer a guy who has the tangibles to play in the league, but doesn't have the skillset I prefer. It's just more difficult for my goals as a coach.

I kind of like the offer we made to #9....pretty good legacy decision!:hookem:

Christian went to San Diego State

    Tyler went to UH

I thought Charlie Brewer commited to SMU because Chad Morris was the coach, but switched commitment to Baylor because it is P5.

Neither did we recruit Michael Brewer, who started at Tech & VT

Randy & Jenna's son wasn't the only son of a former Texas QB to be on that OU team.

SMU was the best offer Charlie had; Baylor imploded; Steadham moved onto Auburn; and Charlie got an offer From Baylor.

Texas wanted Michael to Gray Shirt, and Tech offered him. He got hurt in his freshman season at Tech, and Kingsbury had his QB by the time Michael healed.

Robert was always a favorite player of mine growing up. That score against Bama's still one of my favorite moments. As long as he puts the orange back on moving forward, it's all good.

    Blon.

I realize that the bio is too short for such things, but for the younger crowd, one of Britt's major football accomplishments was John Madden made a first ever new category on the All Madden team when he named Britt to the team as a Special Team Player. i remember watching the announcement on TV and the glowing remarks Madden had about Britt and his efforts.

Bates may indeed have been the first; I just remember Madden's gushing over Britt

    SabreHorn,

    Good stuff, thx.

B/t/w, some names are just football names.

I always thought Britt Hager sounded like a linebacker.

I remember delivering a pizza to Brit Hager's apartment probably in '88 or so. I couldn't believe how massive the guy was.

I was in charge of the tutoring program for the athletes from '82-'85....the last couple of years, Brett put on TONS of MUSCLE....he only wore DOLPHIN SHORTS (remember those??) ADONIS, personified....there was one of our female tutors that used to raise her eyebrows when she went off to tutor Brett....she was hilarious about it....
I knew his girlfriend at the time, as well.....if you look at their son, Brecklyn, he looks exactly like a mix of the two....with her beautiful golden locks, of course....her hair was like Boticelli's VENUS....really a gorgeous lady....
