No need to disappear. Better to consider writing future posts as if the players' mothers were in the room with you. That doesn't prevent honest criticism, but it will help temper the language and hopefully make said criticism more constructive.

I think if you poop on a moderator's post poop comment, you've doubled (at least) the poop, and maybe attained time travel...

If doubling the poop were all it took to achieve time travel, I would have watched the world both began and end by now. :(

Maybe you'd get fewer poops if you also heeded that advice.

OP - I think he’s a contributor. He makes mistakes sure, but he’s made some pretty big plays and I can’t tell how many of his mistakes are the result of doing too much / covering for others. Plus, I think he’s a pretty good leader.

I admit I was mad at him when I watched the replay of the onside kick from Saturday. He was slow to attack the ball as if it totally took him by surprise. How can that happen in that situation? What are you thinking about?

Probably looking at the coverage team, picking out who to block, something like that. Not paying attention to the ball or the kicker; that's usually not part of the job.

Ignoring the initial poop obsession that has now overtaken the board for some reason... :D

PJ is what he is. He plays hard, he's a good tackler (usually) and he knows where he needs to be. He doesn't have great closing speed, he gets out of position sometimes due to poor eye discipline, and ultimately he's just not an elite player. But he's still our best option in that role, from what I can tell.

Tell me who you think on that special team could have anticipated a line drive smash like that? It was a fluke and no one could have caught it, well ok maybe someone with SUPER fast hands, but it was so freaky I don't blame PJ.

PJ Locke is solid. I played his position sometimes. Usually CB. He is not elite, but he is solid. He'll make an NFL roster someday.

He's been a lot better in run support than in pass coverage this year.

I'm surprised teams don't try that more often. An expected onside-kick only gets recovered like 1/6th of the time anyway when tried in the traditional manner. But the last time I saw it was in our 2009 season against Alabama, and I actually think it was an accident and we were just trying to squib it.

Good points. I am as guilty as anyone of criticizing the kid’s play, and a few others on the team. But I hope that I will never brand them as bad players and will only address their deficiencies in certain areas of their game. And IF I am right about the deficiencies, failure to address and fix same is on the coaches. An old rule of management is, if you have a problem within your span of control, and you do not address the problem, you become part of the problem.

I have confidence in these coaches that they are playing the best players available and are trying to coach them up. Perhaps the problem is the best players are not good enough. I am too old to still run a 4.6 forty. My fault? And, I have equal confidence that these players are trying their hardest to win for the team, and the FANS. Being critical on this board of failure to make a play because of bad techique or mental error is ok. But I wonder how the player’s attitude towards their play is affected by branding them as “worst at a position” and other general negative statements as to their overall football ability. After all, these are just young men seeking recognition for their game and they work pretty hard for the team, and the fans.

We’ll see, I bet he makes it as a ST player then goes from there. Unfortunately, I have no time to follow anything NFL related. Someone update me on that in a year or two....deal?

I like PJ, great attitude, leadership and what he has done on the field.

However, he does NOT get a pass from me on the onside kick. Sorry, but you are the tip of the spear dude - there is a reason the coaches have confidence in your instincts, decision making and ball handling skills to be ready on the onside kick receiving team.

10 yards away from the kick, you HAVE TO anticipate the ball could be kicked to YOU - you have to anticipate and do your best to recover it for your team....OR if possible let it go by to a player behind you.

Nash, I can’t agree with you. The dodgeball type high speed kick is something we should be prepared for. Locke wasn’t. Now perhaps that’s on the coaches, but I wonder. The proper play would have been to avoid the kick (not try to field it) and let the players further back field it. From what I saw, Locke was not looking directly at the kicker and he was surprised.

I have been wondering why more teams don’t try this approach and in fact, when Dicker kicked off at about the 50 earlier in the game as I recall (after a penalty), I wanted to see TH try it. If it bounces off the receiving team’s player, odds are high that the kicking team will recover. If the ball gets through, most likely (when kicking near to 50), it will be fielded quite deep.

Not gonna disagree with you, just that as I saw it at the time that ball was like a fast pitch baseball and I gave him some slack. Watching game again now so if I’m clear headed enough by then I’ll re-examine and question my thoughts.
One thing though I didn’t think you could kick the ball like that with any degree of consistency, iow, I thought the whole kick was more a big stroke of luck for Tech than any preplanned play. All onside kicks I’ve seen were the ‘bounch’ attempts or a short pooch over front line.

I meant he will start after preseason cuts are final. Make a roster in regular season. Perhaps as a ST specialist. I think he is just too slow and cannot overcome mistakes with speed like say Caden Sterns, BJ Foster, and all the greats of the past (Huff, the Griffin twins, Ross, Jammer, Westbrook, Thomas). I am partial to him because I was similar. Too slow could not make up for mistakes in the secondary. But I could tackle. Anyway I was too small to play D1. I am not comparing, I just like him, know he is a leader and well liked on the team.

I'd agree particularly since that style is pretty low risk. It either bounces off the guy in which case you've got a better than average chance of recovering it, or it's a squib kick that probably gets fielded around the 30 or 30.

I wish we did more pooch kicks. With some practice they can be pretty effective. I still remember that USC hit the one in the fourth quarter where if our guy doesn't make a sliding catch, it might have been a turnover.

I remember Mack used to do "pop up" kick offs sometimes. There was one in Austin against tceh that worked like a champ. Leach being a one dimensional coach didn't have his special teams prepared (we had used the pop up several times that season) and they weren't ready for it. Our coverage guys were running like the wind and I think one of them might have caught it on the fly.
