Houston coach, star Oliver's quarrel gets heated

I thought it was "cute" when Oliver called out Herman last season, like a good-natured rib for bolting from UH. Now, it appears he's just a punkass quitter who knows he's going to get drafted in the early 1st round, so why bother following coach's directives?

Kudos to Major for keeping it calm during the press conference. I don't know how reasonable his request was (wearing a team jacket when he's unavailable for play?), but it sure seems like Oliver is begging for a fight. Some GM's aren't going to deal with that, unless they're dying for interior help.

I could have seen the point had it actually been cold or raining...but it wasn't. He is demonstrating to all that could see (or read afterwards) that he will be a problem child for anyone who takes him. It is quite frustrating to see talented players piss it away because they have to show what a primadonna they are...and those tendencies don't go away.

Not sure why the rule with jackets, but I am sure this was more about a "principle" than the jacket. And Ed Oliver looks like a giant pain in the ***.

Also, Major looks looks like an "ol ball coach". Aged 15 years with the head coaching job.

Oliver is obviously done and holding back for the NFL and Major is clearly ticked off about that. You can see both sides but Oliver crossed the line into the wrong by how he responded. You Do. Not. Ever. go after or challenge a coach like that. At this point it depends on what kind of statement Major would like to make. At a minimum Oliver isn't on the sidelines for another UH game this season and at a maximum you throw the guy off the team. The tail can't wag the dog and players must respect and obey their coaches.

They both looked stupid. Major being petty because the kid decided to sit out and Oliver just being plain ol stupid. You are about to be a multimillionaire just say the hell with it and walk off.

    Agree 100% easy.
If it’s a team rule Ed’s gotta take the jacket off. But Major, have an assistant tell him. If he refuses, you absolutely cannot at no time ever go over and start taking the jacket off! Mind you the one game or so you are nationally televised.
At no time ever can a player be so enraged he has to be restrained from his head coach. Looks like he got a pretty good body shot on a teammate.
Not a good situation for either side.
    Hopefully Major can resolve.
Best case, Ed plays next Saturday has a monster game, and declares right after. Major thanks him, and wishes him the best, and both move on.

I'll say that I can see how major could have done that better. Could have figured it out a lower profile way of handling it.

But they obviously had a rule regardless of why there was a rule. And if you set a rule and your big player decides to flaunt his willingness to break that rule, then I don't mind major taking that on himself in front of all the players.

Again, I'll acknowledge that major could have figured out a more diplomatic way of handling it. But in that locker room, maybe low profile and diplomatic wasn't what was best for the whole team.

Major needs to show him the exit. Otherwise, he will lose his team. Oliver is simply coasting for the NFL paycheck.

No way if that was the worst of it.
Dude wrecked some games, and game plans especially early on.
No knock on Major, uncharted water, but a coach with some experience in the situation may not have had him out there, or had the ground rules in place.
The only leverage you have is hopefully family and people around him, and draft status.

I would imagine it was Major trying to take off the jacket himself on a guy that’s been the best player (with a great motor by the way) since he stepped foot on campus.

It was on Major. Just say “take off the jacket”. Maybe add a “please” and “sir”. Major is a cocky SOB by the way as well.

According to all reports, Major told him he new the rules and take it off. So if there's a "cocky sob", it's the arrogant kid, who is showing the NFL a preview of dealing with him.

Pro Coaches won’t put up with that stuff. But not concerned about it, the seasoned vets will help the rookie get his mind right, one way or another.

To hell with that kid.. Major's the coach and you follow his rules, otherwise your Ss is off the team. Right now they are winning games without his 5 play chump on the field. He is replaceable. See door-bye.

That’s fine. But you’re leaving out that he reached over and yanked on the jacket. I think Oliver knows how to take off a jacket. It was obviously disrespectful and because he thought Oliver was faking. I don’t care how he frames it in the press conference. Did Oliver react well? No. But he was put in a hard position by Major. Scummy move

I'm amazed that this is even being analyzed, and people( like Tebow)are against what Major did.
    Snowflake era I guess.
Major doesn't have a jacket on. He doesn't need a jacket. Major is tough. Apparently Ed Oliver who (obviously looks like he can play by the way he is moving) has to wear a jacket because he can't take the cold. I'm a little surprised he made the traveling squad.
Let people who've been playing , wear the jacket-it's a good rule. When you play hard in the cold your pores open up to sweat, soon after you take a rest, though the cold rushes in through your pores and drops your core temperature quickly.
Major barely grabbed the jacket. And Oliver went off like that?

It seems like a dumb rule, but apparently Major has enforced it before on other players and Oliver knew it. Oliver has probably been pampered his whole athletic life and figured he was an exception. Good for Major for standing by his principals.

No way does the head coach need to say, "please", "pretty please", "sir", etc. Team rules are team rules. Doesn't matter if you (the player) think they are fair or not. You do what the coach says. Period. Or you don't remain a member of the TEAM. The only reason Oliver wasn't told that he's off the team in the locker room at halftime was probably because Applewhite doesn't want to damage the kid's pro future. I think Applewhite knows that the kid is done at UH, so he's not pampering Oliver because he needs Oliver to continue performing for the Cougars.

If as a player you don't think something is fair, you discuss it with the coaches at the right time and place, and in the right manner. Until the right opportunity arises IN PRIVATE, you do what you're told, keep your mouth shut, and be a good teammate. Good teammates follow the rules and do not openly challenge team policies or the coaches. That's how the team functions optimally. And that's best for everyone.

Some people on this board may have a problem with that level of black and white, but that's the reality, and that's how it works at the collegiate level (Pros are a little different for various reasons, but not entirely different). Applewhite has a lot to lose regarding respect in the locker room and perceived authority if he doesn't handle this situation the right way with the team. That being said, Applewhite should have sent an assistant to confront Oliver. He's got bigger fish to fry then taking jackets off players in street clothes during a ballgame.... and he needs to give the impression that he's above the fray.

How so? He was holding him to the same rules he holds everyone else to, and nobody else seemed to have a problem with it.

I think all of this goes back to Major playing for Mack. Mack was big on not looking weak (cold in this case) or tired on the sidelines. All just to give a psychological edge to the team.....Major is just coaching his team the same way.
