The speculation is UT and OU to the B1G with Fox pushing the deal behind the scenes. It makes some sense, but the article doesn't at all address the political obstacles to such a deal. Link
Anything before 2025 is only possible if the Power 5 Conferences agree to realign, and the $EC isn't going to allow that unless they get tired of aggy and Missouri.
I feel like we're stuck. We're obviously a big dog. But when we pushed our weight around too much, it backfired with the at-the-time current B12 teams. Now we're chasing conferences thousands of miles away (or 1400-1800 whatever). Maybe it behooves us to join up (with OU) with a couple of other big programs. But I hate the idea of being in a conference with teams from the state of Washington or Minnesota. That doesn't make sense to me.
I all for Texas to the B1G, especially if we can set it up to where Texas plays one game each year at Rutgers, at Penn State, or at Maryland.
The Kansas game might have had 15K in the seats. We gotta get out of this conference and the Big makes the most sense. CST or EST for all games. All tier 1 schools so grants that get allocated to conferences will be good. Remember conference alignment has more to do than just athletics. Play in front of 100K several times a year. No one cares about football in the PAC. ACC truly is a dumpster fire. In the end I think OU and OSU will go to the SEC, Texas to the Big along with hopefully ND, and TT, Baylor, and TCU scrounge up a new conference with Houston and a few others. Kansas will try and go to the ACC for BBall.
If Penn State played on the road against a 3-win Northwestern team at balls a.m. on a Friday, there also probably wouldn't be more than 15K in the seats.
IF the BIG and Big 12 were to merge, with 2 divisions of 8 teams each, then perhaps there should be 7 divisional games, and 4 games with the other division and only 1 OOC game. That game could be with one team from another Power 4 conference or an FBS program. No FCS, Div II or Div III programs. Make it the toughest conference in college football.
I personally would like to see Texas and Oklahoma form the foundation of a completely new conference. Steal from the PAC B1G and SEC to create a 12 team conference.
Good idea Austin, but you are not going to get LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia or Florida from the $EC - the remaining $EC you don't want.
This. Start wiith USC and UCLA. Fill in with Arizona schools and maybe Colorado/Utah. The PAC is getting hammered in their payouts. They should be willing. Just having those states in the deal along with Texas and blowU should ratchet up the TV contract. Now go pick quality schools and max it out at 12 schools and no more than 2 more from Texas. Just my dream.
Wadster I was ok with the Big 12 till that game. I think 15k is generous. Looked to me like four seats for every 1 person at best. Time to move on.
Aggie left so Texas should not be a problem. I think OK has to leave for the academic prestige alone even if OK state is hurt.
get rid of scholarships and go to Division III and our intramural teams could win national championships every year and we wouldn't have all these brain dead scholar athletes majoring in sports management and muscle therapy. Be a real school with real students playing games. Leave little corporate football to those great schools like a n m and bama. BIG and SEC and PAC and payouts and Fox and ESPN and rape culture and lunatic coaches and childish donors and politically correct everything. No more Heisman trophy bs and 15 year olds getting called out for calling people names blah blah blah or you could just turn on the tv to see who is playing and pray for a good game. and blow up the Godzilatron. I will match my contribution to the foundation to pay for the dynamite. I will even light the fuse for free. Or pay to do it.
Hey, Deloss, I didn't know you visited this board. Sorry to see the memory slipping as you clearly do not remember our conversation from 1986 about the great plan, which failed dismally because of Stanford & Berzerkley.
You totally missed the point, lol. I’d just like them to play within daytrip distance from my bedroom.
And this is bad how? We have two dominate teams, one of which has the inside track to the playoffs every year. We have a quality TV contract, which is paying decent money into the coffers. But NOOOOOO, we have a bunch of malcontents that want to go screaming the the redneck riviera or the frigid rust belt or the land of weirdo tree huggers and whale kissers (see also out diminutive university president) to split the pie humpteen ways and receive less money. EXCELLENT IDEA! The deal in the 80s got scuttled. The deal a decade ago would have made everyone on this board happy, but anything involving little Chuckie NeinASS is going to be bastardized into a self-serving cluster f**k, but then add in the brainpower of Bowelsby, and here we sit. Right now, I can see absolutely NO reason for Texas to consider any moves, as it would not be fiscally prudent. We are the 500 pound gorilla in the room, and with OU losing Dr Boren, we will become the 900 pound gorilla, unless our administration (not CdC) totally fucks it up. What we do need is to clean house in Las Colinas!
Doubt the SEC would really be too upset with losing Ark, mizz or aggie, same with B10 losing Nb many scenarios but new conf could be Tex OU Okst TT Ark Neb Az AzSt TCU UCF Clem FlaSt WVa Mizz...but thats too many add USC UCLA BYU UTAH....just ideas but now way too many need KU for basketball... KSt not really...Colo no..... no for CStrongs Bulls do not want BU image anywhere!
Chuckie NeinASS done humped the puppy on that one Why? no following, no prestige, no academics, ZERO reason to give consideration. None of the PAC teams have any interest at all in moving. That ship sailed in the late 80s - or should I say it was sunk.
In my opinion, if Arkansas, Nebraska, (either or both) and Mizz and CLEM/FlaSt could be added then you have a great conference. don't need all but one or two more additions and and the elimination of Baylor. well that clears things up. I like K State. They get football. Frankly dump Baylor and take Ark, Neb, Mizz, Clem/FSU gets you there. two more adds equals great.
Y'all really need to look at the "exit fee" for ACC teams. Before Swofford implemented it, both Memphis (remember Smith's kid was QB) and Loserville (Pappa John was still involved) offered to pay FSU's smaller ($10 million IIRC) if FSU would drag one of them to the Big XII. I invite someone, anyone to follow the money trail on that one. I'll be glad to provide "clues" for that person to shorten their investigation.
When the LHN 10 year deal expires and ESPN doesn't reup, time to move on. Only thing making this deal decent is that extra cash. No way in hell ESPN makes that deal again.
Only if it makes fiscal sense. LHN is less than 10% of annual revenues. While losing 10% is not desirable, it's much better than losing 25-30% of TV and bowl money because it is split 30 ways instead of 9. Of course, if we don't get new leadership in Las Colinas, it doesn't make a **** what happens, because with the Fenves/Bowlesby model, we are more likely to see the Southland Conference with a better monetary split.
