NONE wanted more immigrants.
Not a single country in the poll.
No one wants it.
Except, of course, the politicians who benefit from it (and new immigrants who want all their 3rd cousins in too).

With regard to the generally higher than average numbers for the US below, the primary reason is that the US has ~67M "recent immigrants" (more than any other nation on earth) who are already in the US and they want the rest of their extended family in via chain migration. Nonetheless, more Americans want no or at least less immigrants, than want more.

 

So, 68% of the U.S. wants immigration to stay at the same level or increase according to PEW. If that's true, as Ann Coulter says, "Adios America"!

Even at the current levels of immigration, the country is being reshaped forever. There are estimated to be 38.5 million immigrants in the U.S. right now or 12.5% of the total population. That's astounding!

Given the U.S. policy of chain migration, those percentages will only increase as the immigrants already here bring over more and more folks from the old country. Add to that a new batch of immigrants each year, legal and illegal (not much difference anymore) and, well, the writing is on the wall (no pun).

The "caravan," at least to date, has been effectively handled between the combined efforts of Trump, ICE, DHS and the DOD. The main idea being, as mentioned above multiple times, that most of them were kept from "setting foot on US soil." Now many of them have gone home.

It is not ideal an ideal situation. A complete overhaul of Immigration Laws is what should have happened. But Trump was unable to get anything past recalcitrant members/jackasses of his own party. So they did the best they could with what they had, including working closely with the Govt of Mexico.

 

There's probably a bit of a "Bradley effect" at play here. It's very politically incorrect to say you oppose immigration, and probably many who say they support more or the same actually don't.

 

So instead let's just let them walk across the border unfettered? To quote you, yeah, that makes sense...

If I'd have ever spoken with a Beto backer (instead of receiving 10-12 robo-texts) , I would have given them a clear statement of my feelings about Mr. O'Rourke's candidacy.

Once illegals understand there is no more catch and release and for sure NO benefit to entering illegally it will slow to a manageable trickle.

I still think the wall is a bad idea. A much better idea is mandating E-verify. I still can't understand why this is not a push by Trump. I love the restriction on handouts & benefits. Seems to me that if you couple that with a mandate on E-verify most of the illegal immigrants will pack it in.

There will still be a lot of green card illegal immigrants that let their time here expire (40-50%) that the wall won't do any good against. However, they are not usually criminals or welfare recipients so I'm not as concerned about them.

The assumption in your statement is that those workers that previously earned $20+/hr will relocate to work a job in a field for pay by the basket or close to minimum wage to clean a hotel room. The data does not support that premise. Those automated out of jobs seldom relocate and wait for their jobs to return. They may take a step back to work a few jobs but never will you see them fill the farm worker roles.

 

If your concern is with migrant farm laborers, that can easily be addressed with a wall and a guest visa program. Everyone else stays out.

 

Why does a guest visa program take a wall?

That's a reasonable man that I could agree with.

There is no need for illegals to pick lettuce.
There is a visa program that allows UNLIMITED agri workers so we can know who is here and where they are.
These workers are NOT allowed to get welfare.

Of course that requires the employer to be responsible for the worker AND to make sure the working conditions are safe.
BUT if we would force companies to utilize H2A then the wall( in all its' forms)would stop the flow of welfare seeking hordes.

 

This wouldn't be a bad deal for Uncle Sam if it was just for this caravan. Migrants demand let us in or give us $50,000. The only problem is 150 million migrants would start hitching up their wagons and heading for the promise land.

I lived in Laredo from 1970 - 1976 (junior high and high school). I also lived in Port Isabel from 1980 - 1982. I've visited both places many many times over the passing years and maintain contact with friends from those long ago times. And I will say I love South Texas. So I feel I have some real world knowledge of the culture and the problems. All that being said, it is obvious to me that the vast majority of immigrants from Mexico are uneducated and dirt poor. Combine that with how the Left preaches crime is a symptom of poverty (excluding white collar greed) and not exclusive to a certain race. So why do we wish to exacerbate the root of crime? That is what Trump should focus on and not insulting the Mexican people. Get to the essence of the problem. It just happens to be people from Mexico. They are not the problem. It is the TYPE of people from Mexico that is the problem. And the fact that we have laws and it is his job to enforce those laws (upholding the Constitution).
