Just looking at the current landscape of WCBB this year and it’s obvious that there are no dominant teams this year. It’s unfortunate that the injuries have occurred to Texas this year but if they can get it together there’s no question that they can make a run to the Final 4.

I kind of was going to go the opposite direction. I think this very much is a rebuilding year for the Longhorns. I almost wish they would've redshirted Joyner completely, let Charli develop out (or we'll lose her), and then next year would've been BOMB. I just don't know that we match up well with many teams.

I disagree. Even with the injuries I think that Texas matches up with any team in the country if Joyner is healthy and in shape. They certainly have their flaws but there’s not any dominant team out there including UCONN.

But Coach Aston is going to have to step her game up on the coaching end and help them accentuate their strengths and cover up as much as possible their weakness which is on the defensive end. They’re not great athletically on the perimeter.

Charli is just making freshmen mistakes right now. Fouling too often, missing bunnies under the basket, etc. She's developing every time she makes a mistake and gets to watch it on film. I'm sure she is putting herself under a lot of pressure to live up to her name, ranking. Hopefully she will start to just play her game and have fun doing it!

Well, we sure didn't match up with Mississippi State and Tennessee. I don't count on Joyner giving us a quantum leap in competitiveness, even if she's "healthy and in shape." She'll help, but her presence alone won't produce a miracle. Joyner's biggest problem has always been that she can't shoot--long range or mid range. Last season she couldn't even shoot close to the basket. Hopefully there will be a transformation this year, I devoutly wish it, but we'll have to wait and see. I've watched Baylor and UConn and Notre Dame, and I honestly don't see how our personnel match up against them right now. Sorry to be so pessimistic, and I hope there is some evolution upward as the season progresses; but if you want to be a top team, at some point you have to beat other top teams. We haven't done it yet. ...I do agree Aston needs to step up tactically, and I agree with the posters who want more minutes for Collier. She's the future, hopefully. We need to see if she can develop, and we need to keep her.

So teams like St. John’s does and Texas doesn’t? And Joyner doesn’t need to be able to shoot the ball great from the mid range to have/make an impact on THIS team. She’s the best rebounder on the team and is the most versatile PF on the team in terms of having the athleticism to guard the undersized/stretch 4’s on the perimeter of Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Iowa St, and West Virginia at a decent level while also having the size to guard traditional PF’s.

If Joyner ever played with a high motor/energy All the time she would the best player on this team even without a consistent mid range jumper. IMO, Texas’ weakness is defensively and the lack of athleticism on the perimeter against quicker players. If Coach Aston can somehow cover up that weakness as much as possible and also continue to find ways to get other players open they can be in the mix. My point is just that no matter how good those teams are there is no dominant teams in WCBB this year.

We have to improve a lot to be at the level of the last two years. With Lashann's injury, we fall off in athleticism from what we're used to. I want Joyner on the floor a lot, but if her shooting doesn't improve, she won't be the complete player we always hoped for. We need Sug, Warren, and Destiny (and Joanne) to be sharp on the three. I hope Charli grows in her role quickly. We're not getting much from her now, but I know it takes time. I commend Karen's willingness to finally try different defenses. Basically, I'm trying to see this as kind of a rebuilding year, and if we do really well, let that be a nice surprise. Next year, we'll have close to the same team, but add in Lashann again, Sedona, and Celeste. Sounds good, though we will miss Jatarie.

As I said, no doubt Joyner will help the team. My point was that the addition of Joyner does not make us a Final Four team. I just don't see it at this point, unless we get some significant overall team improvement.
